Status of this hadith?

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

I got this quote attributed to the prophet [saw] as a forward:

"Acquire  knowledge. It  enableth  its  possesor  to
> distinguish right from wrong; it lighteth the way to
> Heaven; it is our friend in  the desert, our society
> in  solitude,  our  companion  when  friendless,  it
> guideth us to happiness; it sustaineth us in misery;
> it is  an  ornament  amongst  friends; and an armour
> against enemies."

Does anyone know if this is really a hadith and the status and reference for it?

wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

Assalaamu alaikum,

I got this from se7en's site:

Knowledge is a comforting friend in times of loneliness, it is the best companion during travels, and it is the inner friend who speaks to you in your privacy. Knowledge is the discerning proof of what is right and what is wrong, and it is the positive force that will help you surmount the trials of comfort, as well as those of hardships. Knowledge is your most powerful sword against your enemy, and finally, it is your most dignifying raiment in the company of your close companions.

Mu'adh ibn Jabal

I am sure I have read the wordings that abc posted. and I *think* both versions were posted sometime back. I am not sure if one was attributed to the prophet or not.

Wasalaam.

Se7en's site?  It was on my site, Asim. Its from that book Beauty of the Righteous and the Ranks of the Elite, a collection of rare hadith.

Sorry Arshad, I know it has been on your web site for a long time. In fact, I even have it stored on my computer. But, for some reason I thought of se7en's site to cut and paste :) Odd. Insn't there a slightly different version of this narration (from a different person?), like the one abc posted?

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

Hope everyone is doing well inshaAllah :)

We did actually got into a discussion on this before, on this very message board :)

Though the saying of Mu'adh ibn Jabal and the hadeeth are similar, as far as I know the hadeeth ABC posted *is* a hadeeth, ie something attributed to Rasulullah [saw], though I do not know it's source or authenticity.

From what I can remember, in the previous discussion we had no one was able to find out about its authenticity.

wAllahu a'lam.

wasalaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah.

ps - The quote by Mu'adh ibn Jabal is taken from the book The Beauty of the Righteous & the Ranks of the Elite by 10th century scholar al-Asfahani( translated by Al-Akili.  It is an *amazingly* eloquent, beautiful, and moving book, one of my favorites that I return to time and time again.  It is an ocean :)  I strongly recommend it to anyone looking for some true 'soul' food :)

I posted up one my favorite excerpts from it in this thread here.

as salaamu alaykum :)

I found the older thread where this was mentioned, check it out here.

This is what brother Khalid said about the hadeeth:

I first heard about it from a book I picked up a long time ago called:

"The Sayings of Muhammad"  by Allama Sir Abdullah Al-Mamun Al-Suhrawardy which was first published in 1941.

The book says its a Hadith but it doesn't give any references for it so I'm not sure over its authenticity.

wasalaamu alaykum :)
