Violence on rise between rival Asian groups

By Severin Carrell
27 January 2002

A spate of attacks within the Asian community has increased fears that tensions are rising between Sikh, Hindu and Muslim groups in Britain in the wake of the World Trade Centre attack on 11 September last year.

The Commission for Racial Equality now plans to intervene after several incidents this month, including the murder of a Pakistani restaurant owner by a Sikh gang and an unprovoked attack by Pakistani youths on three Sikh boys in east London.

Seven men were arrested after a gang of about 20 Sikhs allegedly attacked the Lahori Village restaurant in Southall, west London, last Saturday night, leaving its owner, Imtiaz Hussain Syed, dead with multiple stab wounds.

In Ilford, police are looking for four Pakistani youths who allegedly robbed three Sikh teenagers of their mobile phones and wallets, leaving one boy with a head wound and a broken finger.

They allegedly described themselves as "Paki Panthers" and racially abused their victims. Sikh community activists claim that gangs using the same name are operating in other parts of east London.

The incidents have deepened concerns about religious divisions within the Asian community that have been worsened by the 11 September attacks and by a British National Party (BNP) campaign to divide Sikhs, Hindus and Muslims by smearing all Muslims as violent terrorists.

Sunrise Radio, the country's largest south Asian radio station, has now banned the word "Asian" to describe all its listeners because Hindus and Sikhs no longer wanted to be associated with Muslims.

Sikh leaders have complained strongly to the Commission for Racial Equality chairman Gurbux Singh about white attacks on Sikhs wearing turbans in the mistaken belief that they are Muslims.

Mr Singh is planning to make a direct plea to religious leaders and local councils to tackle the problem. "It is clear that there are tensions across the communities," he said. "Faith communities have a major role to play in developing coherent strategies and bridge-building."

Mr Singh is hosting a meeting of religious leaders to discuss plans for a network of local, community-based multi-faith projects. Council leaders will be warned that they are now legally obliged under new race relations legislation to set up "community cohesion" plans to tackle racial tensions.

In Southall, the police have played down claims that Mr Syed's killing was racial after his son alleged that, before the fight, one Sikh attacker had referred to the hostilities between India and Pakistan. The Met believes the attack was not sectarian, but was linked to Mr Syed's attempts to break up a fight between the Sikhs and some Tamils two weeks ago.

However, Sikh radicals in Southall have supported BNP claims that only Muslims are to blame for last year's riots in northern England, and that Islamic fundamentalists are bribing Muslim youths to convert Sikh and Hindu women.

May Allah have mercy on the soul of Mr Syed. Inna Illahi wa inna alayhi raijoon.

My husband and I always saw the ads for Lahori Village on ARY and had earmarked it for a visit next time we go to London :(  We still will go, Insha Allah. Maybe his family will continue the business?

Assalaamu-alaikum

A warning before i start, i'm gona go all guns blazing in this reply, so those who are faint hearted, please go and do some ironing or something.

OK where do i start? Lets start with the attacks. I have always said, ALWAYS that we muslims MUST train, prepare for combat, physical, hand to hand streetfighting, basic military training (jogging, running, climbing etc) but quite often i end up getting ridiculed, or being told to get in touch with reality.

Well i said that after sept 11th, the muslims would become the targets, and we would end up seeing a Bosnia or Kosovo type situation here, and slowly the attacks are on the rise, the police dont give a damn, so what are we gona do? Go home, cover our ears and hide under the stairs? Pretend we will be OK in the end? Really? Will we really be ok?

Its now a bit late to start going down the gym to start training, for self defence or whatever. As early as the first week i started posting here, i often said we should be prepared, training should be part of our lives, especially for the sisters as we would end up beng targetted, but i got shouted down, and now? The time has come for muslims to start getting targetted, to start being attacked, we are gona get kicked around, because EVERYONE is gona gang up on us, and we, we will be a PATHETIC bunch of IDIOTS, because thats all we are, a bunch of idiots unable to defend themselves. Look at our women, mothers, sisters, wives, most cannot even run for two minutes without half dying, they spend the time eating, reading novels etc, and when ever someone says anythng, they get emotional, hysterical, and always hve the same excuse "oo oo we got kids, we got kids, blah blah blah" thier so hard to look after. I aint dissing ANY sister for being large, overweight, as a lot of people who train hard are big anyway, in fact for combat, large size is a massive advantage (any bro ever gettting slapped by a big women will tell you)!

Well so do the non muslims have kids, yet they have gyms, their gyms are full of mothers training, doing self defence courses etc, what are our women doing? "its hard work looking after kids, we just aint got the time".

Well when your taking your kid home one day, and some thugs appraoches you, and starts beaten you senseless because your a fundy muslim, you'll be thinking "i wish i MADE time".

And the bro's, a lot of them train, but a lot dont, too many are content with sitting at home reading books on Java, and such nonsense 24/7, or out wasting time sitting in cars with thier mates. So what you gona do when a gang of sikhs approach you? Fight back? But you dont know how to fight, so what you gona do? Cry?

And what of those bro's content with listening to tapes, and rwading ample amounts of books on Hadith, Islaam etc? That aint enough, remeber Allah loves the strong muslim more then the weak one, strong as in physically strong.

I think muslims MUST now make an effort to start training, real serious streetfighting training, intense boxing, fitness training, combat training, military training, because its now Politically Correct to attack muslims. Knowone is gona defend us, knowone is gona stand up for us, its us, on our own, we're alone, only WE can fight for and defend each other. But we can only fight if we know HOW TO fight.

As for any sikhs or hindu's, i would LOVE for them to come and attack the brothers, because we can handle these unclean fools, and we will teach them a lesson, as we always have, do not mess with the muslims, cause we will kick your butts.

As for being classified asian, i am delighted that we know longer are gona be called asian. I am muslim, muslim first, muslim last, muslim only. I dont wanna be linked to those cow and monkey worshipping hindus, or them unshaven (down there), unclean sikhs! PUR-LEASE!!

Anyway my final words, start preparing for serious trouble, we are public enemy number one, and just remeber, if your attacked, at least be in a position where you have the ability for fight your way out of it, rather then hoping the attacker wont do too much damgage to you.

Wasalaam.

wa’laikum wa’ssalam

I was very shocked and saddened to hear of the tragic death of Imtiaz Hussain Syed’s. Inna Illahi wa inna alayhi raijoon.
Seven men were arrested after a gang of about 20 Sikhs allegedly attacked the Lahori Village restaurant in Southall, west London, last Saturday night, leaving its owner, Imtiaz Hussain Syed, dead with multiple stab wounds.
It was only two weeks ago I walked past the Lahori Village restaurant and smelt the heavenly delights that so often tempted my senses. On occasions I turned my head towards the large glass and glanced towards the talented chefs and waiters working busily inside. Many looked like family men dedicated to their work in order to provide for their wives and children. I could see them creating an assortment of delicious cuisine and the look of satisfaction, as customers tasted their food with delight. Perhaps one of the workers I observed and briefly maintained eye contact with was Imtiaz Hussain Syed? Since his death, I will never know…….

What I do know is the hatred faced by Muslims is no longer an experience which feels surreal. No longer is it something that happens to Muslim’s on the TV that live thousands of miles away, but it’s something that is happening in my own backyard and I feel scared.

I have heard stories of many young Asian men including ‘Muslims’ who form into gangs based on their religion, language, and nationality. They are extremely untamed and fight with each other using weapons such as bottles and knives. Many are uneducated, ignorant and unemployed and have been in trouble with the law. Possibly the actions of these small-minded individuals are the main driving force behind the rising tension among the ‘whole’ Asian community.
As for any……this is part of one of the Brother’s comments I wanted to quote but I think it will be edited soon so I will leave it out
I think comments and attitudes that abate other religions only aggravate the resentment and intensify the tensions that already exist among the community.   Hate only leads to hate. It doesn’t solve it.
Mr Singh is hosting a meeting of religious leaders to discuss plans for a network of local, community-based multi-faith projects.
The above snippet of Brother Kashif’s article appears to be one positive solution. Getting involved with other communities and trying to educate and understand them sounds like a ‘civilised’ answer to tackling the racial tension problem.

Theres a lot of misinformation being spread about the murder. Some say a scuffle bewtween Sikhs and Sri lankans with mr Hussein getting caught in the scuffle, others say racist, and within closer circles that this was a retaliatory attack. Imtiaz Hussein's restaurant was the one that supplied food my cousins walima not so long ago. He leaves behind 3 young teenage children. There were 1000 people at his janazah on Sunday.

Now I'm not sure about increased attacks within the community or the real motive of the murder, but this is indeed a wakeup call for muslims - get ready for the real fight, the police can't and won't do anything to help. Muslims aren't the flavour of the month right now. If we don't stand up for ourselves these sikhs will keep harassing our community.

Assalamulaikum :-)

I'm not sure if this is the best place to post it, but from reading the
comments, it made me think about something..

It is said rightly that we should defend ourselves..I just wanted to
ask how a sister should do this..some good tips would be helpful..or if
there r any sisters in the UK who can let me know of any good self
defense classes..I would love to be able to do some sort of martial
arts..any suggestions on any martial arts cos some of them involve bowing down
in front of each other and stuff..anyway..I'm just thinking out loud..

Their are a lot of things you can do, not all involve martial arts. The best place to train is at a womens only, street fighting class, they exists at sports centres. Do NOT do normal martial arts as they are useless, most women are just not strong enough to be able to use it against a much bigger male. The streetfighitng teaches you vicious fighitng techniques, which you would use if you were attacked, and it would work. Also do a bit of boxing, and weight training with your own bodyweight like chin-ups and pushups, they will be hard at first, but you'll get strong, FAST!

I'll post in more detail when i have more time, inshallah.

Aww,

I think at first the muslims need a reality check, it dosen't matter if your a 10th grade black dan in Ju jitsu, it dosen't matter if your as fast as Bruce Lee when you kick. It dosen't matter whether you pump iron and can lift 100kg weights, all of this physical activity means nothiing if you can't lift the duvees/blankets for fazr and go and give the azan at the local mosque.

Before you build your self physicaly, build your iman, look at the sahabas, they longed to meet Allah. How many of us are ready to die this very minute ???. How many of us are ready to hug the prophet [saw] ? How many of us can say with full honesty that we are spreading the light of Islam through our biggest dawah, which is our character ?

At the battle of badr, many of the sahabas were new to fighting, they didn't have many arms, they didn't have cavalyry but what they had was the Yaqeen in Allah and unity. 313 vs 1000. 1000 of the enemy they had the latest arnaments, they had everyhing that was modern for that age and time. If a neutral observer were to judge who was going to win the war it would have been the 1000 are going to remove the 313 from the face of the earth. However, when the battle started the 1000 melted like snow on a hot day, because Allah secured their victory.

This is what we need nowadays, for the brothers/sisters to attend and pray the fazr namaz instead of the gym. We need to also put a stop to all this hate and being unselfish.
We can't have success if we follow any other way, success is only in Islam and that is according to the beautiful ways shown by our prophet[saw].

I think that Muslims should get physically fit too, especially brothers who will someday have a family to protect.

Furthermore, if you're puny then this will hinder you from fully practising the command of the Prophet Muhammad sallallahu alaihi wa sallam, 'Whomever amongst sees an evil, he should change it with his hands. If he can't change it with his hands, he should say soemthing. If he can't even do that, then he should at least hate it in his heart - and that is the weakest form of faith. [aw kama Qaal `alaihis-salaatu was-salaam - Imam Nawawi's 40 hadith]
