Salaamz

Is there an ayat or sound hadith which speaks of people whom transgress limits in using Aql IE Sufis? Are there any limits in using ones Aql to reflect? Please let me know this is very important.

there must be something about contemplation if Sufism is so widely denounced?

Bismillah was salaat was salaam ala' rasul, first of all i would say that the sufis as a group are not very known to posess this problem of "aql", rather it is the extremism in ibaadah and zuhd that may emenate from those who attribute themselves tho this way that has been criticised. However this does not negate the fact that they have been influenced by those who thread this path. So with this point being clear inshallah, it should be known that there are no hadeeth specifically criticising those who transgess in their use of their aql, rather what you would find is narrations from the sahabahs and those after them severely chastising those who put forth their aql ahead of the sunnah or give precedence to it before the sunnah when the two (aql and deen:sunnah) seem to be inconsistent {which actually never occurs for those who have clean hearts and minds and the scholars say}. The reason being(that there being no hadeeth specifically criticising those who transgess in their use of their aql)is because during the time of the messenger sallahu alayhi was salam was that such groups and ideology were almost non-existant. It was not until the rise of the khawarij when they opposed Ali due to his acceptance of an abitration between him and Muawiyah when they had fought each other, (may Allah be pleased with them all) that the first signs of such an innovation began to become widespread. For amongst the claims they made were:

1. He (Ali) oppointed men to judge in a ruling whereas all judgement is for Allah, so he Ali and those with him have apostated for Allah says “And whoever does not rule by what Allaah revealed, then these are the disbelievers.”[Sooratul Maa‘idah 5:44]

2. He (Ali) descended from his title of amir al mumineen when him and Muawiyah made the peace so he must be amir al kaafireen. Thus they fought against him.

And there is much more about the khawarij than this, but the point i want to make is how they use their understanding of the quran and sunnah in very deviant manner all because they based their understanding of their own intellect or aql without refering to the correct understanding of the sahabahs. This is why as it has been narrated by Al Bukhari, that one time:
"A woman asked 'Aisha, "Should I offer the prayers that which I did not offer because of menses"(because according to aql or analogical reasoning if women make up fast during ramadan should they do likewise with the salah they missed due to menses, makkes sense huh?) 'Aisha said, "Are you from the Huraura' (a town in Iraq?:i.e. she is asking her is she a khawarij, for it was known amonsgt the sahabahs such was their methodology of thought) We were with the Prophet and used to get our periods but he never ordered us to offer them (the Prayers missed during menses)." 'Aisha perhaps said, "We did not offer them."

In other word Aishah is telling her: look! This is what we were commanded to do from our Lord and you should submit to His commands without any unnecessary questioning. Even though she could have easily explained to her that we don't make up the salah because there are so many compared with the days of fasting and if we did it would place a great burden upon us. But to cut such thinking from the root she answered her in this manner.

It is from this point on (i.e with the advent of the khawarij) many deviant groups began to appear such as the qadariyyah, murjiah, ect..., with the mentality of putting forth ones' aql before the text being the uniting factor between all these groups.

Hence, the scholars of the past especially those from the people of hadeeth such as imam Bukhari who titled one of the chapters in his saheeh : The chapter of The Dispraising of opinion and analogy (you would not find this title in the English translation online)

Narrated 'Abdullah bin 'Amr:

I heard the Prophet saying, "Allah will not deprive you of knowledge after he has given it to you, but it will be taken away through the death of the religious learned men with their knowledge. Then there will remain ignorant people who, when consulted, will give verdicts according to their opinions whereby they will mislead others and go astray."

Ibn Hajar says in his explaination of the hadeeth that what the scholars criticise as indicated by Imam Bukhari in his chapter heading is not using ones opinion or analogy but rather using it to the exclusion of quran and hadeeth or to in a way that contradicts both. For the importance of analogy and reasoning is something which its importance in this deen cannot be denied. {abridged and in my own words of what he wrote}. After Bukhari you have many scholars such as ibn Taymiyyah and his student ibn Al Qayyim writing many books and treatise refuting and criticising such groups. Anyways, this can be a very long detailed topic and inshallah this should sort of "open you up" to this issue which as i said can be very detailed, however, a good set of tapes to listen to would be Jamal Zarabozo's The 8 series tapes The Modernist Movement in Islam whereby he goes into much detail about these groups and their ideology. And if you want i can mail you a copy if you would like {it might take a while though}. And Allah knows best
