Tyson denied boxing license

Las Vegas — The Nevada State Athletic Commission denied Mike Tyson a boxing licence on Tuesday, thereby barring his planned April bout with world heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis in Las Vegas.

The five-member panel voted four to one to deny a state licence to Tyson after considering his record of violence inside and outside the ring, including the brawl that broke out at a New York press conference last week.

The vote came after a last-minute attempt by Tyson to withdraw his licence application when it became clear that the state panel was ready to reject it. The commission declined to let Tyson withdraw his bid.

The panel's action opened the way for a search for an alternative venue for the Tyson-Lewis fight, which the World Boxing Council (WBC) has said it would sanction outside Nevada.

Lewis is the current WBC and International Boxing Federation (IBF) champion.

Tyson, 36, wearing a light grey suit, appeared to bristle at times during the tough questioning that marked the near three-hour hearing.

"I'm not Mother Teresa, but I'm also not Charles Manson," said the twice former world champion.

Tyson needed to convince a majority of the panel that he deserved the chance to fight again in the state despite a decade of antics that have often overshadowed his fearsome presence in the ring.

All five commissioners, who are appointed by Nevada's governor Kenny Guinn, had earlier vowed to keep an open mind about the matter until after they had heard Tyson.

"Nobody wanted this fight more than me," commissioner Dr. Tony Alamo said after the hearing. "Unfortunately his actions, his lack of control, put us in this position."

Although Tyson appeared to trigger the brawl with Lewis at last week's New York press conference, he told the Nevada boxing board that he had been provoked by one of the champion's bodyguards.

"I'm doing great. I was doing magnificent until that guy hit me the other day," said Tyson, who was flanked by advisers during Tuesday's hearing.

During the course of the hearing which Tyson had described as the most important moments of his life, the boxer was questioned about his reported use of the drug Zoloft to control his violent mood swings.

Tyson said he was not taking medication now but disagreed when commissioner Amy Ayoub told him that she did not consider the boxer, who has made over $200-million (U.S.) in his career, a victim.

"You don't know me. You don't know if I'm a victim or not. You don't know my horror stories," he said.

Asked about his psychiatric evaluation, Tyson said: "I'm crazy but I'm not crazy like that. I don't want to kill or rape nobody or nothing like that."

Popular opinion had been stacked against Tyson having his Nevada licence renewed. In a USA Today/CNN/Gallup Poll conducted last weekend, 64 per cent of respondents said Tyson should be banned from boxing.

But the stakes were also high for Las Vegas, which was hit hard by the travel crisis that took hold after the attacks on New York and Washington on Sept. 11.

Promoters have said the fight would carry a $150-million purse, making it the richest bout in boxing history.

Meanwhile, Las Vegas prosecutors are considering filing rape charges against Tyson stemming from the allegations of a local woman. They are expected to make a decision later this week.

Why the angry face?  The fight might still happen some place else, but I think this quote sums every thing up:
"Nobody wanted this fight more than me," commissioner Dr. Tony Alamo said after the hearing. "Unfortunately his actions, his lack of control, put us in this position."
I still feel the brother needs to get rid of the yes-men around him and seek help.

A few places being touted as possible venues outside the US are South Africa, China and Japan. They might take it on bearing in mind the lucrative deals attached to this fight.

Despite Lewis' words he wants the fight I think he might try to delay the whole thing a little under the pre-text of safety, buying time to prepare himself further for this the biggest fight of his life. But Tyson certainly seems to be keeping up the war or words after his quote today "I'm going to fight him any time I see him in the streets."

Lewis is terrified of Tyson, and is using his "safety" issue as an excuse to hope the fight is called off! Lewis is genuinly scared of Tyson! He realises tyson will destroy him.

So Eleanor, i take it your an ex fighter? What weight did you fight at? Did you ever fight for a world title?

Lewis says he won't fight Tyson on April 6

LONDON -- Heavyweight champion Lennox Lewis says he won't fight Mike Tyson on April 6, but he could take on another challenger.

"The April 6 date is definitely out the window for the Tyson fight, but it may be OK for another fight," Lewis told BBC Radio on Sunday. "Later in the year for a Lewis-Tyson fight, definitely.

"Mike Tyson is the ultimate matchup in my era and it would be disappointing not only for me but for the public not to see that matchup, so on the sport aspect that fight should be made."

If Lewis goes ahead with a fight April 6, his most likely opponent would be IBF challenger Chris Bird.

Tyson lost his bid to fight Lewis in Las Vegas on April 6 when the Nevada Athletic Commission voted 4-1 last Tuesday to deny him a boxing license.

Lewis and Tyson brawled last month at a news conference in New York to announce the fight.

Lewis has not ruled out the possibility of fighting Tyson outside the United States. South Africa, the Netherlands and Germany have expressed interest in holding the bout.

Tyson has taken the first step in applying for a license in California, where he hopes to fight Lewis. Rob Lynch, executive director of the California State Athletic Commission, has said a hearing probably will be held late this month.

"There are a lot of different situations that could develop," Lewis said. "Everything is still young, the decision has just been made and we need to go back and see what comes out of this.

"But I would love to beat up Tyson and give him a whipping because the public want to see it, plus the fans want to see a Lewis-Tyson matchup, so it is a disappointment to those people as well."
