Some questions

Assalamu Alaikum,

I have a few questions that I would like to ask regarding women in Islam:

1. Could you please explain the reasoning between why it is that 1 male witness is equivalent to 2 female witnesses?  Also why is that women get less inheritance than men?

2. Was the first woman, Hawwa (AS), made from the rib of Adam (AS) or is that a metaphor referring to 'of the same species'?

Jazzakum ullahu Khair,

Wassalamu Alaikum,
Uzer

Salaam,

k, i'll do me best :)

About a woman getting less inheritance than a male...well think about it. The men are the one who has to look after the entire family. His income goes towards feeding, clothing, and basically all the necessities that a family needs. When a man and a woman get married, the Mahr the woman recieves is hers, right? She doesn't have to share it w/ her hubby, and if she does then it's Sadaqat on her part. Same thing if she works...if she spends it on her family or her husband is Sadaqat from her, it's not obligatory. Whatever she earns it's hers, whereas whatever the husband earns he MUST share it w/his wife & family.

(Even when a woman does housework or cooks for her husband + family, it's Sadaqat)

Given this, i don't see the reason why women complain about the inheritance issue. (not dat i'm sayin' you complainin :) )

And this is an order from Allah. He knows what's best.

oops, i'm not finished ...:)

So, the money the men get from the inheritance would go to help income his family, but the money the women get she gets to keep. The men pretty much does all the finances, so i think i'm going in circles, but Insha'Allah i hope you get the gist of it. (please anyone correct me if i messed up somewhere)

as salaamu alaykum,

The verse in the Qur'an that talks about one woman's testimony being equivalent to half that of a man's is in specific reference to financial transaction, something women at the time of the prophet [saw] knew very little about.

There are other instances in which one man's testimony is equivalent to half that of a woman's, in cases in which a woman's knowledge of the relevant issues exceeds that of a man's.

An *excellent* article on womens rights that addresses this issue is posted here.

wAllahu a'lam

wasalaamu alaykum :)

Assalamu Alaikum,

I've read the article sis.se7enand Al-Hamdulillah it was beneficial.  But isn't it possible that there are women who are well-versed in financial transactions?  Just the same isn't it possible that there are males who are well-versed in women's matters such as male gynecologists?  Maulana Wahiduddin Khan cites in his book "Women in Islamic Shariah" that the reason for this partly biological since there was some research done by a Russian scientist which discovered that men were better at certain tasks, while females were better at others.  Among the tasks that males were better at were they had better memories.

What about the question regarding Hawwa (AS) being created from a rib?  Is it literal or metaphorical?

Are you sure?  So this raises another question from myself... What are the rights of a man over his wife?
