Assalamu Alaikum,

What do you think of this feminist writer?  Is she worth reading?  Are her views inline with Islam?  What are the best books on Women's Rights in Islam that you might know of?

wa alaikum us-salaam wa rahmatullah

I would definitely NOT recommend her works to any Muslim. There is a good tape called "Feminism's new Islam" which i can send you akhee which mentions some of what she believes.

Her comments on Islamic history and the Islamic sciences contain huge inaccuracies, to the extent that she writes words which undermine the sincerity of the sahaba.

Her lack of research also shows when she mistakes companions for others with similar names living generations afterwards, and although i haven't looked at her works for a while, an alarm bell always rings in my head when her name is mentioned.

I second Kashif's post. In one of her books, The veil, the (something..I forget) and the Male Elite, she attributes her expanse of knowledge to "some afternoons spent with an Islamic scholar" and with this in hands, proceeds to debunk the liftime work of thousands of scholars.

She's far more feminist than Islamic, her feminism doesn't flow from Islam, she seems trying to cram feminism into Islam.

Run, don't walk, away from her book to sometin better,

Maryam Jameelah is very good on comparative religion side of women's rights.

Assalamu Alaikum,

Thank you for your advice.  I had the displeasure of finding a few of her books in the library and a lot of it surprised me.  What I found most confusing was that she quoted a lot of 'scholars' and Sahabee saying things which would not befit them.  A lot if what she said I had never heard of before so I posted this thread so I could know whether most of it was fabricated or actual.

Jazzakum ullahu Khair,
