Remembering to say Kalimah

Assalamo elikuim

I remember we were discussing that what would we do if we have just 5 more second to live. Well , yesterday I had a car accident,  although it was nothing close to losing life or any thing but I was thinking later that at that moment everything escape my mind, I was just saying “Ya Allah  no , ya Allah no” when my car hit the other car. For those few seconds when my car was skiding towards the other car I didn’t remember saying the kalimah or anything. I was just hitting the brakes and saying Ya Allah. I was thinking what would have happened if I would have died without saying the kalimah (well it is little dramatic because it wasn’t so bad :) but still.. ) How could we keep that in mind at those last seconds. ? I think when  a person is sick and dying , one could say kalimah kind of  knowing that last moments have arrived but what about when something happen suddenly  ?

Wasalam
tq

PS: Alhamdullah my kids werent with me and luckily the other car was huge 4x4 so nothing happened to the driver or the car also – just my small car :( but Alhamdullah , Allha huAkbar nothing big happened .

Asalaam Alaikum,

Man, that's scary....Alhumdulillah you are ok tho and you're kids weren't in the car w/you. This post reminded me of a scary dream i had (don't worry i won't tell you the dream...) but at the end of the dream, i knew i was going to die (in the dream of course ) and the last maybe 5 minutes or so of the dream was me being scared as heck but repeating the Kalimah over and over.... and over.....
then my alarm went off and i woke up still saying the Kalimah! it was so weird! I told my parents that part of the dream and my dad was like 'Alhumdulillah at least you remembered to say the Kalimah!' i was just hoping for some sympathy bc that dream had me shook!
But it really made me think... man, i hope i remember that when that time sneaks up on me!

Wow!, I had exactly the same thing happen to me in a dream, I was gonna die, and then I started saying the kalimah. But in real life, when you're in mortal danger, your brain goes into "fight or flight" mode, you're either gonna confront the danger or try to escape it. Well, if my nervous system goes into that mode, I hope I remember to say the kalimah!.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Muhammad Alshareef talks about his accident experience in a khutbah. Listen to Accidental Reflections.

TQ, Alhumdulillah, I am glad to hear that you are ok :)

Thoughts like that seem to crop up in my mind too, and that is one the reasons why we prefer to have the quran / zikr / 99 Virtues playing in the car whilst driving.  It seems to help frame of mind and it always plays in your mind too :)

Also, one of the reasons for ensuring that I have a scarf on at all times when I leave the house, is that should an accident occur, and should I pass away in that accident, whoever is at the scene must know that it is a MUSLIM lying dead there and call the appropriate Muslim Funeral bodies to take care of the mayat etc.

It scares to me to think that, if my identity as a Muslim is not known, then the mayat would be handled differntly...Scary stuff!!!!

As salamu alaykum,

Al hamdu lillah you are okay, tq.  I think that for most of us until we actually experience something like death we don't really put it into the right perspective.  It isn't really a reality yet.
That was a really good point about playing Quran in the car.

As salamu alaykum

Alhamdullillah you are okay, and thanks for sharing sis:)
Playing the Quran, or focusing on dhikr while driving reminds me of a scary story I heard wayyyy when i was little. I am not sure if its real or not...but its about this guy who lived in Saudi Arabia and was driving recklessly playing some popular arabic song...He got into an accident and when the cops finally got there, he was on the brink of death....still singing the song! :o The cops tried to no avail to get him to say the kalimah. He died singing the same tune over and over again...
When i heard that story i got sooooooooooooooo scared!!!!

anywayz, jus' my two cents...i pray we all have a blissful entrance into our next life (Amin) :-)

Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah

tq, Alhumdulillah, you got out unhurt. Car accidents, no matter how minor, are really scary. I've been driving for about 10 months now but I'm still scared of going out on the highways. Within one month of getting the car, one guy hit me from behind. It wasn't that bad, but I was terrified, it was as if i could feel the jolt in my heart.

I'm sure most ppl know the duas of leaving home etc, but just a reminder. While stepping out be sure to read "Bismillahi tawakkaltu ala Allah, la hawla wa la qoowwata illa billah" [rough translation: In the name of Allah and in His trust/safety (I go out), there is no power or might except by Allah]. Then when sitting in the car, say bismillah and read the dua "subhanalladhi sakhara lana hadha wa ma kunna lahu muqrineen, wa inna ila rabbina la munqaliboon" [rough translation: Praise be to Allah who has made (this vehicle) available to us and under our control, surely by ourselves we would not have been able to do so, and unto our Lord is our return].
I heard an interesting thing regarding this dua on TV today. The speaker was talking about briefness of this life and the everlasting nature of the hereafter and how this life is like a journey. Even in this dua which we say for everyday travel, while praising and thanking our Lord, we acknowledge that the final journey is unto Him ( wa inna ila rabbina la munqaliboon). Of course he put it in a more  eloquent way.

May Allah ta'ala keep us in His safety and protection always. Ameen

wassalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah
