Women in the Emirates have emerged from Sheikh Zayed's land to meet the spirit of time and to take on the challenge of development to become complete partners in building the society, said Her Highness Sheikha Fatima bint Mubarak yesterday.

"President His Highness Sheikh Zayed bin sultan Al Nahyan wished this society to be in harmony with the livelihood of the nation, in harmony with the open and giving Islamic spirit based on sacrifice and respect for women, and in harmony with humanity everywhere, said the president's wife and president of the UAE General Women's Union (GWU) at a glittering ceremony to mark Arab Women's Day.

In her keynote speech to the honoured audience of Arab women, Sheikha Fatima said "the event is taking place in accordance with a request of the women's committee of the Arab Parliamentary Union. It is our good fortune that this celebration comes amidst a variety of outstanding accomplishments by the Arab woman.

The past two years, she added, had witnessed a multitude of achievements by the Arab woman such as holding of the first Arab women's summit and the extraordinary Arab women's summit, both held in Cairo.

"In the Arab women's Day, we see the woman's humanity shine in all aspects of her life. She soars through her motherhood, her sacrifices, and through her enchanting presence in our lives.

Today, our dream extends to wanting the Arab woman to be a complete partner in society, just as she is the mother and the human being that makes humanity complete, Sheikha Fatima told the woman gathering.

Turning to the Palestinian cause, Sheikha Fatima lent strong support for the Palestinian women in their struggle against the Israeli occupation.

"On this Arab Women's Day, we proudly and loyally salute the Palestinian woman for her patient endurance of the occupation with all its violence and might.

"We salute the mothers, the living martyrs, and their witness to the arrogance of the occupying forces and their continuous hostility. Our hearts go out to you: to the wives and to the mothers of martyrs."

She called on Arab women to get ready for the daunting challenges ahead, saying "let our motto for tomorrow be: 'an Arab woman up to par with the times, worthy of the ambitions and ready for the challenges.'

"We have come a long and difficult road, yet here we are: active partners in the celebrations and in the taking of decisions," she concluded.
