How do we know that the Quran has not been altered since its revelation?

And what is the divine inter-locking mathematical system that prooves the Quran has been protected?

asalamu alaikum,

I think when they say that the Qur'an cannot be altered,

they don't literalty mean a single copy absolutely can't be changed.

It can.

But it won't be the Qur'an- get it?

So you can change it, but a pear is a pear is a pear- take something away, and its not a whole pear.

Or change one pear out of a million pears, and the fuit "the pear" is still the same.

"Altering the Qur'an" to me at least, means changing something, and that change becoming widely and popularly accepted.

The Qur'an HAS been attepted to be fiddled with as far as I know.

The Qur'an has a few mechanisms to prevent this fidling to become WIDESPREAD and THAT is the altering they are talking about.

One of the safeguards that naturally exist against this is: the huffaz.  What a miracle of the Book.

Part of the everlasing secret of the Qur'an is that it is embedded in the hearts and minds through memorization and learning in thousands (who knows the real figure?) of hafiz.  This way, it always lives on as a live corruption-alert.  You can changed the Bible subtely because usually people don't know the whole thing.  As well, there is sometimes a general rhyming scheme and meter that makes it difficult.

This is what it would take for someone, if they:

make a new ayat (astag'ferallah) or surah:

then: it would have to *sound* authentic which is the first impossible task. Right at that level, it messes up.

then: fit in with meter. If its an extra surah, it now becomes 115. It also has to have a *message*.

then: go change every existing copy of the Qur'an.

then: deal with hundreds of thousands of people who can recognize the error in a snap, the huffaz.  How can you change ALL those people's thoughts?

then: deal with scholars who knos this, gain general acceptance from the world ummah (1.4 billion)

You can see how it was set up that this is quite an impossible task insha'Allah.

I was reading once from the apologist Jay Smith a claim that 16 collations of the Qur'an exist, like 16 different copies with 16 different settings of surahs and ayat, but the fact is, only ONE Qur'an is accepted.

The Qur'an as we know it is consistent.

I have heard of a mathematical system and so on, and email forwards of calculations and so on, but I do not know them to be verified and true.  One theory I read in a cpoy of the Qur'an spoek about a "Qur'an Code" the guy cracked and that the hadith were false, and that's obviously a false translation and so on and my friends even tried to burn the copy.  In fact, later I heard the author of it was shot dead, who knows?

I have also heard there was deleting and shuffling of surahs after Prophet SAW's death, I say, who knows, who cares, Qur'an is truth, and until there is actually evidence of that why should I doubt the Most High (never should)?

How do we know the Qur'an hasn't been altered? We take the Prophet SAW's word- and he's good for it Praise Allah Subhana. asalamu alaikum. abdullah,.

About the mathematical system, I read that all kinds of things in the Quran can be shown to be multiples of 19.  Apparently some parts of the old testament have a similar pattern.  The website that I found that information on is questionable, but if anyone is interested, they can send me a message/e-mail.

There is a good book explaining about the study of the Quran, including the oral history and written history, and how it was preserved, the book is entitled Ulum al-Quran by Ahmad Von Defner.  I highly recommend the book.

A hadith informs us about those Companions who had memorised the Qur'an in its entirety and gone over it with the Prophet before his death:

'Narrated Qatada: I asked Anas bin Malik: Who collected the Qur'an at the time of the Prophet? He replied, Four, all of whom were from the Ansar: Ubay bin Ka'b, Mu'adh bin Jabal, Zaid bin Thabit and Aba Zaid.' [Sahih Bukhari 6:525]

The fact that some of the earliest historical reports make special mention in the accounts of the battles that were fought, of Muslims killed who knew (something of) the Qur'an by heart, gives a clear indication that memorisation of the revelation was considered important and widely practised from the earliest times.

It is therefore certain that the Qur'an had been memorised by the Companions of the Prophet during his lifetime. This tradition continued among the Companions after the Prophet's death and, later, among the tabi'un and all generations of Muslims that have followed, until today.
