I am not aware of mournig being "haraam".  Please elaborate by informing us of a particular case in reference perhaps?

It is haraam to "beat your chest" and "cry out loud / scream" or "question WHY did so-and-so have to pass away" etc etc.

But, I have not come across anything that says it is haraam to mourn the death of a close family member.  I think, however, there is a limited duration in which one can mourn a death (Islam = everything in moderation).

I would really like to hear more about this.....

Jazak Allah

I personally wouldn't mourn too much if anyone died because I see death as a transition. It's not like I'm never gonna see him/her again, it's only a matter of time. I'd certainly feel awkward to mourn over someone if they were going away for a long vacation.

Another reason why I won't mourn over the dead is that I'm not terribly attached to anyone. Now, that doesn't mean I neglect them. Deep down inside, what I really want is paradise, and they are only a means to attain that end. I want to treat them in a manner that is pleasing to Allah(swt).

"You should know that the life of this world is only play and amusement, a show and boasting among yourselves, a quest for greater riches and more children. Its similitude is that of vegetation that flourish after rain:the growth of which delights the tillers, then it withers and you see it turn yellow, soon it becomes dry and crumbles away. In the hereafter there will be either severe punishment or forgiveness from Allah and His good pleasure. The life of this world
is nothing but an illusion." (57:20)

Especially after reading that beautiful verse, it's difficult for me to feel sad for a muslim leaving this "illusion".
