"Aunty''s returning to College Life"

Asalamu Alykum Wa RahmatuAllah,

I keep on running into my mom's friends who are in their late 40's and early 50's coming back to the University. Now my dilema started after conversing with one of the aunty's recently!!!  She said that she has nothing to do since all her children are in college and ofcourse I was saying to myself the entire time that Muslims don't have boredom in our vocabulary. We have plenty of issues to worry about. I am not saying that getting a university degree is bad  but if you have practically lived your life and are well settled, Why do you want to work so hard and spend your precious time learning about environment issues etc etc when you have this awesome opportunity of learning more about our deen, or volunteering in the Mosque. I guess my dilema, conceren, question how does someone in a polite manner tell these women that they can do so much for this deen. For example become more active in the women's committee in the mosque or something similar to it and instead of having this "Khatams" or whatever so called Halaqa's where you don't learn anything to productive Halaqa's.

*Disclaimer* My intention here is not to hurt anyone or be rude but just see what's going on in my fellow Muslims communities"

aslamau alaikum,

consider as well:

this action is a matter of choice,

although Islamic volunteering and stuff is important, they don't *have* to choose it...

Prhaps she doesn't WANT to do anything else

Perhaps they want to help the ummah with their degrees?

What's the point of even going to school in the first place then unles its to become a doctor or soemthing?

Perhaps they are helping to promote general education which can improve muslim standard of living and advancement in society.

Perhaps. aslaamu alaikum. abdullah,.

Walaikum Asalam,

Perhaps I am jumping to conclusions here!!! However, in no way i am saying that university education is not important.  I truly feel that college eudcation is a beautiful tool that we can use to spread the word of Allah(swt) and also economics is an essential of life.  But  what i am simply referring to is the phenomena that my 2 cent worth of observation has observed. That women returning to college for higher persuits when we need them desperately in other spheres of life.  I really am happy for aunty xyz that she has returned to school to persue her p.h.d but her perecious time could be utilized by doing something even more productive.

salam,

ayesha -- many times getting a degree in politcal scince or biology Is actually helping the women in our deen.

for a women to be active in her community its good when she has a degree to go talk to people about what islam says about biolgy and islam, or anthropolgy and islam instead of going to the masjid, making brownies and having a bake sale to be 'productive'.

these women also need a degree to secure their future if their husbands pass away or they get a divorce.

Wasalamz,
instead of going to the masjid, making brownies and having a bake sale to be 'productive'.
I agree sister nouha we need more Educated women in our communites. More educated women will mean more educated mothers thus a generation of educated muslims. However, as I said before the key here is ~returning~ back to the college life, when they already have degrees in their respective fields. I am also aware of the fact that learning is from cradle to grave, although, this is a weak hadith. But nevertheless, the essence of it is that knoweledge is truly an ongoing process. And my definition of productivity goes behind the bake-sales and cleaning the masjid work. Although we do need people to do that :) and actually especially in our community!:)
I guess my point being that as one of my teachers said that no offense to anyone that all our engineering and doctorate and etc degrees are not one ayota (sp) to 2 rakha's that we pray. Now I know not to take literally but finding that perfect balance. Do you know what I am talking about now? or am I confusing you more :) which i generally do so anywayyysss inshaAllah will comment more on this later.

My pet peeves is when people tell others what to do with their time,
life, what is good  etc etc.  How noble of people to lectures others to
do good while infact not doing so themselves i.e. giving the benefit of
doubt to their brothers and sister in Islam - may be by getting
education , the sister might be teaching at Islamic school, or may be it will
help her to understand the religion better or may be neither of these
thing  - she simply want to learn about that subject but never had time
before because of her family or was her life long dream to get that
degree but was not able to achieve it uptil now,is it haram ? I think
there is a hadith also saying that a believer shouldn’t interfere in things
that don’t concern him/her.
Instead of wasting time in debating whether what xyz sister is doing is
good for the ummah , why don’t we do something good for the ummah :)
Sorry if I have offended anyone this was not my intention :), but this
seems to be a big problem in us that we are more concerned in what
others are doing than in what we are doing.
