Aww,

Went to this Islamic Culture show today it was hosted by the Hudds Uni Islamic committe and Peter Sanders came, you know the famous photographer. It was quite nice I haven't been to many of these events before so I enjoyed it.

When I was looking at the slides, I saw pictures of people and places all over the world. What made me think was that there is so much culture out there from the desert plains of Africa to the greens of Indonesia, to the three tier mosques in China. Each picture showed a different way of life within Islam, yet culture it seems played an important part.

My question is do we as Europeans/West have any culture that contributes to Islam ? It could be anything like in the form of our architecture, or social values like queing and picking litter up.

Also do you think there is a place for culture in Islam ? I think so, what are your views and does culture play an important to where you live ?

Salaams

i don't see culture as a bad thing :) i think it's nice, mashAllah ;-D it shows where u're from and the richness behind it :)

i pick up garbage a lot. especially @ the masjid..;-D when i was in sunday school..1 of the "uncles" always used to do it, and tell us when we were little; to, "pick up the little flowers.." ;-D i thought that was really cute! ;-D

my family is cultural..but aren't most desi families? ??? like i said before, i don't think it's a bad thing..as long as it doesn't step outta the islamic guidelines..;-D

i was watching this program on a certain type of hindus..:) they were celebrating diwali..and they were SSOOO proud of their day..of their holiday..it was great..i don't see any harm in implementing that in our eid! ;-D i think it'd be great ;-D ok..that's all ;-D

I think another big contribution from the west is the intellectual/philosophical discourse when it comes to Islam...Growing up in a prevalently Muslim country, most people become comfortably steeped in the "cultural Islam" mode of living...one thing i came to appreciate moving here, was that you could *not* take Islam for granted and the subsequent work and *growth* that goes into it...(although the flip side of this has its fair share of arguments too!) :)

Allah speaks of diversity so eloquently in the Quran:) The beauty of coming from an array of ethnicities each laced with its distinctive tongue, myriad of colors, clothing, architecture etc...Blending together to learn from each other's "tricks of trades" to further our common goals, yet each person humbly masking a heart that is full of burning desire solely for Allah's sake:)

Where I live culture plays a part..yet unfortunately its used as a divisive tool. The masjid floor is treated like a play globe where country/language lines are drawn and redrawn...people generally sticking to their circles..except for the floating few.

So Inshaallah one of these dayz we'll wisen up to our creator's blessings and be able to appreciate and *fully* utilize His Generosity and Abundance (Amin).

Maliha :-)

I had a conversation with an Indonesian bro and he told me about how Islam had spread in that region.  Muslims had come to Indonesia as traders and settled in with the local tribes, learning the culture and language.  They slowly introduced the locals to Islam using the songs, music and rhythms familiar to them to teach about Allah, prophet Muhammad (pbuh) and the principles of Islam.

The Christian missionaries weren't as successful as they tried to push their own culture onto the locals...so in this way culture helped to spread Islam.

Islam does not have to be at conflict with culture, I believe it fits right in in being in harmony with culture.

One of the times i really appreciated the different cultures in Islam was when our local youth got together for a pot-luck dinner.  SubhanAllah we had all these different cultural dishes and the combination was DELICIOUS
