competition

Assalamoalaikum brothers and sisters

Just a quick question regarding your opinion about the sense of competition? Should we encourage our children and one another to compete with each other in studies, sports etc. or not?

Just to elaborate my point, sometimes I think that if we do encourage competition it may do more harm than good. It looks to me that it may be the root cause of the present-day Muslims competing with one another in all sorts of worldly affairs, getting more rich at any cost. For those who are not good enough, it may incite jealousy and depression at others' successes and for those who succeed, it may make them proud of their successes. Also it may cause our children to be less willing to help each other out.

Please let me know your thoughts and if you know any scholar who has deliberated on this, where does it stand from Islamic view point? Especially, if there are any teachers on the board, please let me have your views regarding children's attitudes towards competition

Thanks and wassalam
