Brothers going to the gym...

I have a quick question for the brothers(for those who workout at a gym)...when you guys go to the gym---do you go to a coed(male & female) gym or a male gym (if theres such a thing)? Also why is it that its 'suggested' that women attend a females gym but you never hear that similar suggestion to the brothers?? Just wondering ???

I think its to do with being protective towards sisters. We know how guys think and talk about women and thus don't want this to be the case with sisters, especially those that have the will to wear hijab and cover up their beauty. A gym is a place where ones physical traits are the subject of attention so its common for one to look at the opposite sex wether they're jumping around on the treadmill or whatever. This definately applies to men where they're exposed to half naked women in tight outfits. Men are more prone to looking at women, thus in greater need to control their naffs, so its definately an issue. So your point about brothers not going to single-sex gyms is valid

Some friends of mine go to the gym.....you really don't wanna hear the things they say about the women there! ;)

But my guess is we're confident about ourselves not falling into haram in such places but since we don't know how sisters think, the general advice is to stay away from such mixed places. This hypocrisy by men exists in all walks of life, But I think the magic word is being protective.  Would be interestign what other say.

If men are too consumed by those half naked women in tight outfits... why would they want to bother looking at women in boring hijabs and drapy clothes, that do not show a hint of her figure?

Don't you think it's the same thing if we are on the threadmill compared to when we are to jog in the park or be on the rowing machine compared to when we row a boat/canoe in the river, or go cycling on a stationary bicycle compared to riding a mountain bike/ motorcycle?

Just wondering. Sorry if I sound naive.

The brothers here make it a point to go to the gym at *really* odd hours (like right after fajr), when there's hardly anyone there.  I know a couple of brothers who actually quit going to the gym completely and started focusing more on aerobic forms of exercises (running, push-ups, sit-ups, pull-ups, lunges, etc., stuff you can do at the park) for that very reason ... because they didn't want to be in an environment where the Shaytaan would be at an advantage over them.

Assalaamu-alaikum

I used to go to public gyms, but gradually became unhappy training thier because of all the women in skimpy dress. If they chose to wear long sleeve tops and full bottoms, like most of the men, then it would have been ok. But to see them walking around semi naked put me off training a lot.

So to avoid this, me and my brothers build a gym in my back garden, about the size of an averange room, with all the equipment, benches, weights, punchbags, exrceise bikes etc, and this has meant its a 100% islamic training envirnment, with no women in skimpy dress. If any bros have a similar problems, and have medium garden or garage, they should just get a brick shed built, and buy thier own equipment to train at home.

The other advantage of this is that the women in the house, the mother, dauhgters, sisters, neices now all have somewhere they can train, all they gota do is open the back door, walk 5 metres, and the gyms thier! No long walks, no need to struggle to find time to trian, while the kids are asleep, 30 mins on the heavybag, or bike, or lifting weights, its easy!

Everyone gets to benefit!!!

Wa alaikum salaam

sister, it really depends on, *ahem* what turns you *on*,

sorry to say.

"men" being too consumed in a type of figure is probably a generalization... in my wife's women studies class last year they told of middle eastern underground pornographic material, which, sadly, displayed women in burkas and veils and half naked because the men there aparently can't take "too much exposure"... often its the engima thats the draw.  depends on what shayton makes you fancy. astag'ferlah. asalamu alaikum. abdullah,.

Asalaamu alaikum,

I've joined the gym in town...its the only gym in town and yup its co-ed... but I look at the situation as "what is the lesser of the two evils?"- sitting at home and getting fat and lazy, or being exposed to women in gym gear?

Its simply a case of lowering the gaze and sticking to my routine....why would I be there for anything else?

Single sex gyms from bros would be good....but Sis, I haven't seen any gyms just for guys... I've seen 'em for women tho.

wasalaam,
Ahmed
