Respected Brother/Sister in Islam,

Assallaamu Alaykum Wa Rahmatullaahi Wa Barakaatuhu

MUSLIMS OF SOUTH AFRICA: AN URGENT CALL

"The Satanic Verses" was and remains banned for good reason in several countries of the world. It is an established fact that this demonic publication has blasphemed three things that are most beloved to the heart of every Muslim man, woman and child - Islam, the Qur'an and the Holy Messenger (sallallahu-alayhi-wasallam).

This obnoxious publication has hence injured and inflamed the fury of the global Muslim community, numbering more than a billion. The personality of the Holy Prophet, his family and companions and his teachings are considered more sanctified and honourable than the life, children and wealth of every Muslim. Sacrifice of all of these precious things to uphold the honour of the Prophet is the ambition of every true believer.

Adding insult to injury is the attitude of western nations, their politicians, intellectuals and media gurus who rushed to the defense of this demented writer under the pretext of preserving "Freedom of speech". Yet it is a known and accepted principle that no freedom is absolute in any civilized country of the world. Freedom of speech that is injurious to the feelings of a people, when such speech is baseless, absurd and malicious cannot be called freedom but is in actual fact defamation, denigration and vilification. There appears to be a calculated move on the part of this deranged man and his publishers to gain maximum monetary gain and fame from the storm of fire that this novel has ignited.

Roald Dahl, a notable author has correctly surmised when he referred to Rushdie as "a dangerous opportunist". He said: "Clearly he has profound knowledge of the Muslim religion and its people, and he must have been totally aware of the deep and violent feelings his book would stir up among devout Muslims". Dahl said this type of sensationalism did get "indifferent" hooks to the top of the best-seller list "but to my mind it is a cheap way of doing it. To my mind, he is a dangerous opportunist." He later told reporters: "I think he's a twit." (Daily News; March 1, 89)

This deeply offensive book caused riots in the East. 6 people died and hundreds were injured in violent clashes with police. The book was publicly burnt in Bradford, England and was banned in many countries of the Arab, Asian and African continents. The book was slammed by the Vatican, the Archbishop as well as the Chief Rabbi.

In a regrettable and unfortunate recent development, the SA films and publication Board has unbanned the Satanic novel in South Africa after it was banned in 1989.

The Muslim community across the country in every town and city are urged to protest this in strong words. It is a compulsory obligation upon all Muslims to lend their support to this cause. "Under the new act, pulications are only examined if there is a complaint" Chetty said. "We will wait to see if there are any complaints" - Citizen, 15-1-02. If the Board does not receive many complaints, it will not consider the matter in a serious light. That could be disastrous. Make sure every town responds. PLEASEWrite to:

Dear Sir

THE SATANIC VERSES : PROPOSED UN-BANNING

"The Satanic Verses" was and remains banned for good reason in several countries of the world. It is an established fact that this demonic publication has blasphemed three things that are most beloved to the heart of every Muslim man, woman and child - Islam, the Qur'an and the Holy Messenger (sallallahu-alayhi-wasallam).

The book was publicly burnt in Bradford, England and was banned in many countries of the Arab, Asian and African continents. The Vatican, the Archbishop as well as the Chief Rabbi slammed the book.

We find it regrettable and unfortunate that the SA films and publication Board has proposed to un-ban the Satanic novel in South Africa after it was banned in 1989.  The Muslim community across the country urge  to strongly reconsider your decision in light of the abovementioned facts.

Yours faithfully
