The shaytan is relentless when it comes to a believer's heart...I mean why would he bother too much with unbelievers??? Ukhty read Ayatul Kursy,Suratul Nas, Suratul Falaq, and Suratul Ikhlaas (three times each morning and evening and before going to bed)...They are strong fortifiers! Also read Ayatul Kursy alot....Seek refuge in Allah every time you feel bothered and have trust that Allah is the Sole protector of believers and that shaytan's "powers" are negligible when it comes to His Allah's Might.

I hope this helps sis...May Allah protect us from the whisperings of the shaytan (Amin).

Maliha :-)

Bismillah,
Assalamu alaikum wa rahmatullah.
you said: "it started just when i realized how important Islam

Well of course that's when it started.  Before that the shaytan had nothing to worry about!! Now he's trying desperately to win somebody back, and he's gonna use everything that's available to him.  His most powerful tool is waswas.  He puts all these bad ideas and thoughts in your head so that you start thinking more about them than about Allah.  And he's sooo happy when it works.  It works in several ways.  Sometimes the shaytan makes you think you're unworthy of Allah's grace, so you say to yourself: what's the point in praying anyway, I'm so low Allah wouldn't even look at my prayer. So the shaytaan tricks out out of praying.  Or on the other hand he can tell you: you've prayed enough for today, that's enough, or it doesn't really matter if I don't pray yet or if I skip this prayer, Allah will forgive me etc etc... Or he makes you think things like: who created Allah, why do we have to pray, questions of qadr and things like that.  Or, he distracts you from prayer, like making you remember things that you forgot or making you think of everything except the prayer (this happens to me a lot unfortunately :( )
So, what can you do about it?  Say a'uzhu billahi min ash-shaytaan arrajeem whenever you hear the waswas, and recite the two suras of protection, Al Falaq and An-Nas.  I heard a very interesting commentary on surat An-Nas and al falaq.  In al-Falaq, we seek refuge in Allah from the many things that he created that are harmful to us and that affect us from the outside.  Darkness, jealousy, evil things etc.  In surat An-Nas, we seek refuge in Allah with all his power, Allah as the Rabb, Allah as the Malik, and Allah as THE Ilaah, from one thing, the thing that affects us most on the inside: al waswaas.
Just seek Allah's protection, and recognize the waswas for what it is: A desperate attempt from the shaytaan to get you to neglect your deen and your akhira.  He's so pathetic.

This is more of a question really...does it necessarily have to be shaitan who is whispering evil things in our hearts?. Is it possible that it is society's influence on us that makes us think of evil things?. Of course I'm not saying that shaitan doesn't exist, what I'm saying is part of the time he whispers evil things, and part of the time we do evil things ourselves, because of society's influence (because we're born pure and sinless).

This thought came up because some people still commit sins during the month of Ramadan, when shaitan is locked up. So, I guess the people are comitting sins by themselves during this time without any help from shaitan??.

If you read the last ayah of Surah An-Naas you get the answer. We ask for refuge from both jinn and humans. So yeah I think its not just the shaitan but the whole environment which in turn might have been produced as a result of shaitan's efforts!

Assalamu alaikum
That thought that your du'a was interrupted by whispering is in itself from the shaytan.  He wants to get you obsessing about these thigns, thinking things like: no, Allah probably didn't accept that du'a, or that salaat, or that wudoo, or that fasting till you not only become obsessed, but you also lose hope.
This is a very interesting article (it was to me) by Ibn Qayyim Al Jawzeeya may Allah be pleased with him:

From Shaytan's Deceptions: Going to Extremes

Allah never orders anything except that Satan takes two contradictory stances towards it: either shortcoming and negligence or overzealousness and exaggeration. It does not matter [to him] by which of these two mistakes he becomes victorious over the slave. He comes to the heart of the slave and examines it. If he finds in it listlessness and looking for loopholes, he deals with him from that vantage. He impedes him and makes him sit. He strikes him with laziness, listlessness and lethargy. He opens for him the door to reinterpretations (ta'weel), hopes and so forth until the slave may not fulfill anything of what he is commanded.

If he finds in the slave's heart alertness, seriousness, desire to work and potential, Satan despairs from attacking him through the above means. Instead, he orders him to strive even harder. He convinces him that what he is doing is not sufficient for him. His ambition is to be greater than that. He must work more than the other workers. He should not sleep when they sleep. He should not break his fast when they break their fasts. He should not rest when they rest. If one of them washes his hands and face three times, he should wash them seven times. If one makes wudhu for prayer, he must make ghusl. [He orders him to] similar acts of exaggeration and extremism. He makes him go to extremes and beyond the limits. He makes him stray from the straight path in the same way that he makes the first person [described above] fall short of the straight path and not approach it. Satan's intention for both is to keep them from the straight path: the first by making him not come close or near to it and the second by making him pass it and go beyond it. Many of creation are misled by these two strategies. There is no escape from them except deep knowledge, faith and the strength to fight Satan and stay along the middle path.

One cannot escape Shaitan's waswasa but we can supplicate so that he goes away for at least a short time. It is really good to read Ayat-ul Kursi, Surat-ul Falaq and Nas.
Actually I've heard that when we say 'bismillahirrahmanirrahim', it makes Shaitan smaller, so try saying that often.
My imam told me that to keep Shaitan from the heart, we should focus on three things:
- Try to make constant dhikr of Allah (SWT)
- Not to talk as much. Open our mouths less and focus more on dhikr Insha'Allah.
- To ALWAYS keep our hearts in check and to keep them alive. Know what's going on with our hearts and try to keep a soft one Insha'Allah.

Hope this helps Insha'Allah.
