The Reward for Sacrifice?

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

I went to a lecture a couple of weeks ago where the Imam was talking about Ibrahim (as) and the sacrifices he made for Allah.

To summarise:

1. The sacrifice of standing up against his own father and community when they were worshipping idols.

2. The sacrifice of leaving his wife and baby son in the middle of a desert.

3. The sacrifice of having to take the life of his own son.

Each time Ibrahim (as) made a sacrifice he was rewarded with Allah's help.

1. The fire didn't not burn him when he was cast into it by his people

2. His wife and son were given water from the well of Zam Zam

3. His son was replaced with a ram as he was attempting to take his life

The Imam went on to say if we as an Ummah want Allah's help (as He helped Ibrtahim (as)) then we need to make a few sacrifices of our own.

But how or what should we sacrifice?

Say:

If it be that your fathers,
your sons,
your brothers,
your mates,
or your kindred;
the wealth that ye have gained;
the commerce in which ye fear a decline:
or the dwellings in which ye delight - are dearer to you than

God,
or His Apostle,
or the striving in His cause;

then wait until God brings about His decision:
and God guides not the rebellious.
[9:24]

The above are just some thoughts which I remember from the talk so any errors contained therein are mine alone.

The reason I mentioned the above, was this idea of a reward for sacrifice in this world and not necessarily in the Hereafter, and the fact that help will come but we have to make sure we love Allah, His Messenger and striving in His Cause more than anything else in this world.

As ever Allah knows best.
