salam,

first day on the job and i wipe out the entire board... woops sorry about that peeps that were on around 6pm..good thing i realized i only accidentally deleted the forum categories and descriptions..so i went and got them back up from disk..good thing eh

anyways i'm trying to install the new version of the board.. so any suggestions on new forums or improvements we can make?

here's some things i was thinking of

--making the albanyia board only available to ppl who actually live here

--making the british board similar to that

--turning off that avator thing on the new board (ie put a pic next to your name how annoying eh)

--adding a new forum for new muslims

--deleting some of the more unused forums?

--making the board closed completely to outsiders unless they register?

aiite let me know what you think
btw i need some beta testers......... anyone.. anyone??

salaams

Whats the new version of the board - will it be the same format as this or a completely new version such as the vBulletin or UltimateBulletin Board types?
I like this current format, its user friendly and stable unlike other versions which tend to have many errors evry now and then.

aww jannah, you just came back and you're fixing everything already???

well to add onto your job, ;-D i really liked the last idea of --making the board closed completely to outsiders unless they register?

and hmm, how are you going to make the albanian and british thingy just for them??? like you're going to have some password or something?

and oh, another thingy- yeah, maybe it's better to take out some of the lesser used forums, cause well atleast from my point of view, i see that there are two forums hardly anyone reads, so i don't know :)

but mashaAllah, you're such a cute sister and soo unbelievably nice! i know if i came home and this site was mine, i wouldn't be doing stuff for this until i got back on track, which would probably be a month ;-D but my whole point is thanks for taking the time out and making this site better and actually asking for our opinions =)

all rightey, take care, smell ya later dudes

Why would the British want to read posts about Albanya?

--turning off that avator thing on the new board (ie put a pic next to your name how annoying eh)

Does that mean the Artist Sometimes Known as Prince can't login
as he uses an avatar/pic for his name sometimes?

--adding a new forum for new muslims

Will OLD muslims, say over the age of thirty but under thrity one
be allowed to read/post/modify in this forum?

--deleting some of the more unused forums?

 More is Less.

--making the board closed completely to outsiders unless they register?

Just make a strange long url, Muslims are too lazy to type out
 Long URLs.

I'm not sure about the stats but I'd say there are many lurkers out there who benefit from the posts but have neither the time nor inclination to post.

I think the current set up is a good one, so I'm in the if-ain't-broke-why-fix-it category on this issue ;-)

although this has its advantages in view of the current situation etc i agree with bro khalid on this one there are a lot of lurkers (muslim and non-muslim) who benefit from the ability to read the posts without the pressure of having to declare who they are etc
i lurked on the old board for abt 6months before i joined :o

is there any way to fix the search function? there are some really amazing threads that i've read,  but i can't always find them again.

Well I was just there, and posted all over the place. I hope I was allowed to :o
What's a beta tester?

Don't make the board closed to members only! If so, then leave an open forum for converts or people with questions/problems. Just think of all the people who posted anonymously with a personal problem! It's a really great service and it would be a shame to do away with it. We shouldn't make it an elite thing "members only". One Allah. One Ummah. Everyone is welcome.
<gets off soapbox>

A forum for converts is a *really* nice idea. And killing a few unused forums sounds good to me.

bsm [slm] I just visited the new board, it looks scrumptious (Vanilla & Coffee hehehe), Masah Allah :)

I like the new email feature :)

I agree about not closing the board to un registered people - sad sad

I don't fancy my email address for ALL to see on the Members list though....you never know WHO's lurking ....maybe THAT facility should be available to members only PLEASE?

Boards to go...boards to go....mmm....difficult choice.....some members that may not post in the other boards and prefer the quieter boards...like the poetry one...all the THINKERS lurk in there :)

Is it my PC, or has a member of this board fallen off :).  I seem to think that last week we had 500 members, and today we have 499.[slm]

slm,

i dont think we should restrict it... leave anonymous posting, and dont lock certain forums to jus certain people.. it doesnt seem fair, and theres no way you can always verify if someone is indeed british or albanyian.

yeah and i think the color change is good.. its refreshing and eye-pleasing :) but might i suggest soem more blues and darg colors? liek maybe a white background, black table headers, light grey colums, etc...

but g'job... i think yabbSE (http://www.yabb.info ) might have been better, but this is pretty good :)

The new board looks nice, but it wouldn't recognize my user name.  Do we have to register again?
I would suggest keeping the line that we have on this board that separates the person's name on the left side from the post on the right side.  It makes it easier to read the post without always having your eyes wander over to the person's name on the left.
Definately put in a place for converts and people interested in Islam!

bsm [slm] :) I take back what I said about the Members List...I just tried it now and one has to be logged on (iow REGISTERED) b4 it can be viewed (*sigh of relief*), thank you :)

The idea to have a seperate board for reverts and those that are interested in finding out more about Islam is not entirley a good one I think.  I don't think we should seperate reverts and "born-into-Islam" brothers and sisters.  Questions and queries asked and answered benefit the Ummah in here as a whole.  We should not make a distinction between us.  Just my opinion :)

Jazak Allah [slm]

Re: New Message Board

This is what I had envisaged for a converts/reverts forum:

It's not making a distinction or putting up any barriers between converts and born muslims. It's the idea that  a person curious about Islam, or who has recently converted and is feeling a bit lost, automatically sees a forum designed for someone just like them. A place where you can ask any question and don't have to feel shy about it because you know that loads of people will read it who are just like you. Who have gone through the same experiences and will support you in your newly found religion.
Anyone is welcome to post in there. The tone must be kept open, friendly and accepting. Likewise converts can post anywhere (nothing new there).
It's not about drawing up differences between Muslims, it's about orientation and organisation. :) I don't think anything negative can possibly be construed from that ???

I was discussing this with Sister Barr, and we thought that a name along the lines of "Road Less Travelled" or "Straight Path (Siratul)" would be good. I also think a name with "Crossroads" in it would be good, because literally we stand at a fork in the road and either choose Islam or don't.
This is all for the new Forum of course.
Madrasat Ul Ilm?..hmmmm... <puts thinking cap on>
Howabout the something Masjid, as in the centre of our Ummah, a place you can go for finding out stuff..?

I think the new board looks great and as an "interested in Islam but not quite there yet" person on this board I *really* like the idea of a forum for reverts/converts.  Maybe in this foum we could have not only posts from new Muslims but *basic* info on Islam.  Sometimes I read the hadiths etc. in the posts and I'm lost and don't know what to reference for more info. without being overwhelmed. Of course that might just be my brain that gets lost... :)

In terms of getting to the new board...we just sit tight right?  I don't need to do anything special?

Peace,

I found this site which is a 'rival' message board to Jannah Grrrrr :)

EDITED BY ADMIN

I thought the avtar's were cute.

I felt some of the features of the board could be incorporated in the medina message board.

One thing I like about Jannah is its simplicity. Its user friendly. Thats all I would ask in the new design of the board, make sure its still easy to use :)

One thing I'm not keen with is when we log off Jannah our user names are still at the bottom of the screen for a period of time. So if there is a member you are trying to avoid and you havent replied to their IM, they know you have been on and are avoiding them :). I was hoping as soon as you press logoff your name disappears instantly OR if you login perhaps your user name can remain invisible if you choose that option :)

Also deleting IM's. At the moment we have to delete 1 IM at a time and that takes a bit of time, esp if you have a large number of IM's that need deleting. Is it not possible we can use checkboxes (like hotmail) when we want to delete 'X' number of IM's simulataneously?

had another thought,

because members are from all over the world we get confused when we arrange times of events ie. Whats GMT when its EST?

Maybe you could display world clocks on the interface?

I saw the new board, it is very nice alhamdulillah. I wanted to mention that you can still see a person's IP when they post under anonymous, so it's not completely anonymous but I guess it is the only way to keep track of that person if they abuse their anonymous status and start posting objectionable material or harass people etc., etc.,

that's not true.  when you click on anonymous posting, it sends an email to jannah, myself, and se7en.  then one of us puts up that message.  the ip address you see is one of ours, not the person that posted the anonymous question.

Re: New Message Board

assalamu alaikum,

I'm voting against:
- blue colour scheme -- I think it's too gray
- java news banner -- it takes too long to load on my slow connection
- having the board as members only -- how wihl anyone know that they want to join if they can't see anything  (will we turn into one of those weird sects that don't reveal any of the rituals except to converts)
- restricting access to certain forums, like the British souq or the Albaniyya complex.  Why would that be necessary?   (and why isn't there a Canadian forum -- I don't want to call it an igloo as has been suggested, but how about the "Maple Leaf Forest" ??? ;-D)  Actually, if anything were to be done to the regional forums, I would like to see them deleted completely -- I already feel awkward even looking in them, like I'm trespassing or something.  Restricting entry to them would only make this feeling worse.

I'm voting for:
- The addition of a New to Islam forum -- Eleanor's pitch worked wonders  (although I think that we should find a name for it that doesn't exclude people who grew up as Muslims)
- The deletion of forums that aren't used very often (but wait... wouldn't that put the Health Club in jeopardy! ;-D)
- The addition of some sort of line separating the user's name from the post
- Something that will keep you from being bumped back to the first page of the thread if you modify a post.

------

Now that I've finished voting (until I find anything else I want to vote on), could someone please explain why there is a 'logged' graphic in the bottom right hand corner of each post?  What does it mean? and is it necessary?

wassalam,
Leslie

Oh shucks I didn't go to all the rooms of the other board, so I didn't realise some contents were bad :( I only posted the url so you guys could comment on the INTERFACE not the content. The design of the site is similar to Jannah but they have extra features:

e.g. They have a members list which is organised alphabetically and you can select a member to find out more about them and read all the posts the particular member has ever posted. Or the latest post they posted.

Re: New Message Board

Assalamu'alaikum :-)

I agree with Eleanor's idea :)

We were toying with a name..

- The Road Less Travelled (yes, a cop out!)
- Traveller's Path
- The Tree of Hope (well, we did have that Forum with the same intentions)
- Traveller's Pavillion
- The Oasis (OK, another cop out, but I thought this is good, coz, we travel in seek of the truth, and this is where we consume, rest and gain stuff from, before travelling towards the truth.)
- The Cherry Blossom (aka Sakura)
(Cherry Blossoms usually blossom in spring, which signifies re-birth, fresh, the circle of life, from hibernation to bud to blossoms.. just like our search from the truth, and being steadfast in it... a life, after buried in the cold... and a ray of sunshine, brings the cherry blossoms out in spring... ever sat under a cherry blossom in spring, and the blossoms fell softly down on you when a breeze blew softly? Subhanallah...)

Also, I'd rather that regional forums are not restricted. I'd want to know what's going on with my other brothers and sisters from the other side of the globe. Plus, that also means, I can't get access to the British Souq :%(.. not that it is well used... :)

And I think we can make non-members to see who's around.. if they see all the hip, cool people around, they may want to join in the wagon... *more job for Meraj*
Also, thsoe who are not members, who posted anonymously, may want to respond to our posts, through not necessariy on the board, but privately. And since they can't do IM, they can e-mail. And maybe, we can have a restricted e-mail (for members only) for those *cough*Hania*cough* who are paranoid ;)

Also, can't we download this board to the new one? so that we don't have to re-register, and be able to use all the functions of the brand new ones, on this board? Like the search option? It'll help in our detective work. :) so that we can cause more paranoia to some members *cough*Hania*cough* ;)

Take care all!
Wassalam :-)

Wow this is great feedback!!! I've been going crazy looking at the board... blue...vanilla..blue...vanilla...text..icons..blue icons..gold icons~~!! i can't even eat ice cream anymore!!!! :) (ok maybe i still can :-)))

Ok the MOST IMPORTANT THING I want to say is that FIRST AND FOREVER there are no rivals to this board!!!! What the heck??? Everyone on the web is just trying to make a place for Muslims. Our goal is the same. Why would we want to compete in that fashion. There are tons of Islamic message boards on the web and more power to them... all of you guys should have your own board and invite more muslims and nonmuslims to join!!!
The same for webpages.... Make your own webpage!! I get so many emails from people who accidentally typed something in and ended up on this page and learned something about Islam.. Isn't that great!!

Ok anyway so back to the new board:

--It looks like everyone wants to keep it open so lurkers can.. lurk :)

--I really like the new muslims forum idea.. a place for people just getting back into the deen or starting off... eleanor i like your names.. but road less travelled seems sort of negative??

--As Arshad said Anonymous posts are posted by one of us..so our ip appears, not the ip of the original sender. However when someone sends us an anonymous message it's sent to us and all we see is the text of the message and the originating ip.

--Why does it say logged.. That means the ip is there but only an admin can see it.

--As for emails being public. There's a new option that allows the users to make it hidden to other users. Admins of course can see these.

--about logging off and the username still appearing at the bottom...that was a known bug in this version.. the updated one should be ok and also it has that thing where you can put how long you want to stay logged in so after 360 minutes it will manually log you out of the system so your name won't appear there.

--as for making madina im's more like hotmail...ummm it's a pretty simple system and if you have that many im's use email it's alot better!!

--i can change the time to GMT so that everyone can easily figure out what time they're at?? or Makkah time??? or the real Madina time??? that would be cool ;)

-- The addition of some sort of line separating the user's name from the post--- I can't figure out how to do this yet :(

- Something that will keep you from being bumped back to the first page of the thread if you modify a post. --- This is part of the programming I can't change it...

--the memberslist features are all there in the new version..

--regional boards....we have 3 choices... 1. drop them altogether 2. keep them altogether 3. make them so only people who want to see them can see them....ie if youre part of the Madina English group that forum appears to you, but if you're not, you never see it. That way if you're not interested in what goes on in Albany or Britain you don't have to worry about it...but people in that group can discuss their own issues...

and yes we went down a number of members b/c i started to do my annual spring cleanup of deadbeat members but then thought why bother...cause everyone will have to re-register on the new board...(and no you don't have to do anything yet.. just relax and we'll try to make the new madina as awesome as possible first before we move in)

meraj yabb se .. uses crazy stuff like mysql etc.. which is nice but what if one day i don't have access to the server.. and if the server gets changed again, which it usually does there's no way to guarantee that it will have what is needed to run the board...

just had a suggestion.. for the muslim kids ages 5 and up.. there is little discussion place to offer on the web.. i have my nephew and niece and they luv this jannah msgboard whenever i am on.. and quite often i give them stuff to read from here and they wanna respond back, why not create a board for them too.. i am sure we all have little bros/sis/nephews/nieces etc that can go on and talk really cute and creative stuff in an islamic environment insha'Allah.. right now all of the stuff is focused towards youth 15 and up!.

These kids sit on the net anyway so why not give them a really good alternate.!!:) i will have the first two members from my home.:)

slm,

Ok here are my 2 cents:

-I vote for the blue scheme. The yellow reminds me of sick people. It's just too bright and NOT pleasing to the eye..but that's just my opinion :)...Is there a way perhaps to tone down the degree of brightness?

-I love the anonymous thing. This is a da'wah board. We're here to attract as many people as possible. If we only allowed members to read posts then to me that defeats the purpose of this board. Besides, there are MANY people who are shy to post but enjoy reading the posts and are inspired by them.

-I like the new forum idea. Barr's "Cherry Blossom" is a beautiful name,Mash'Allah. One thing to consider is to make this forum not only for converts but for all muslims who are at the beginning of this journey of mujahida,or temporarily side tracked ;) For all of us who are lost in that sea of darkness and need a guiding light. Hence, i was thinking something along the lines of "Al-Manar LightHouse" (Manar in arabic means guiding light)

-For Madrasutul Ilm..how about :"The Naseeha Corner", or "Zawiyatul Naseeha"(which is the arabic translation of the previous one), or "The Naseeha Counseling Center"

-For "Darul Hikmah Media Center" we could call it "Majlis Al-Shura", or "Al-Shura Development Center" or "Darul Tanmiya" (Tanmiya=Development) or "Deewaanul Tanmiya" or...?

wassalam :)

ps- Deewaan in arabic has many meanings; one of them is an area in the mosque devoted to the learning/discussion of a certain subject like deewaanul tafseer , deewaanul hadith,etc...

amal nice names!!! I really like Al-Manar lighthouse and Naseeha Corner..and maybe Dar Al Hikmah Development Center

ok i tried to change the colors again.. check em out...

the regional areas are just that REGIONAL... they have nothing to do with race... it's more like if the people in albany new york are organizing something.. why does someone in singapore want to read the details or trying to decide where to hold the event???

as for moving all the messages over and/or usernames i'm not sure if it's compatible...will check it out inshallah..

thanks for all the comments!

I dunno about anyone else, but knowing myself and how addicted I already am to this board, it might be a little too much for my ego to know how many times my post was viewed.  Maybe it's just something I have to work on myself :)

Assalamu alaikum,
I feel the same way about that.  I'm afraid that after a while it might start to look like some masjids: arab masjid, desi masjid, africain american masjid etc.
I also vote to keep the board open.  I know people who don't feel like registering or actually "belonging" to the board but who still enjoy coming here once in a while.
Jazakillah khair jannah :-)

I think its more organised with the regional forums because we can find out about events, activites etc in our area faster. But I also agree with Sis Mariam too many 'regional rooms' may disintegrate us. Also how will you decided who has a regional room and who hasn't?

e.g. Sometimes when members post stuff in other languages like Urdu I feel so left out :(

Barr for you: 'Gong Xi Fa Cai' ;)
Maliha for you: Feliz dia de San Valentin ;)

The number of people that have viewed a thread is kinda scary and embarassing.  I wonder what happens when I post a thread on there talking about the Lakers.  Some people might not read it cause their tastes aren't as refined (i.e. Kashif). ;)  Others might not read it cause they are jealous of the Lakers (i.e. Princess and Arsalan).

Aww,

Great job Sis Jannah.

Couple of things,

1) Do you have the facilityy for a private message board, perhaps sometimes the admin and mod team may want to have a private forum. ?

2) Rule sets, if somebody has one strike they can't post only read access, 2 strikes and password is deleted and held by admin, 3 and your out on the lawn.

3) A lot of gifs are used you may wanna shrink wrap em. Speed up download and less time on bandwith.

4) How come its not PHP and still using CGI ???? You can use MySql + PHP and have more advanced stuff for your board. Check out http://www.postnuke.com. The good thing about that site is you can then use any leading database. May be useful if you wanna do some more advanced stuff.

By the way thanks for the search, it looks good haven't tested it properly though.

As salamu alaykum,

Masha'Allah you all have done a wonderful job with the new board.  The only thing is the color. I really don't like the yellow.:(
How about the color green?  Now that would be really pretty.:D

The colors are easier on the eyes- especially the eyes of a woman who needs bi-focals and won't admit it!

The appearance and mood is different, not as professional and "serious."

I like Madinat Al-Muslimeen because it is a bit different from other message boards. There is an air of authority, of knowledge. The new colors seem to take away from this feeling.

salam,

I disagree, I don't think the new colours take away from the seriousness of the board..I think it is quite pleasing and inviting..I like the new colours..

I don't mind the regional forums, even though I'm not from any of those regions and I almost never go in there..

Is this new board not going to have the instant message thing..

And as for a private forum for mods..err..as long as it doesn't turn into some kind of an elitist clique I'm fine with that..

Lol, Hajreee it's nice to have you back

Regional forums are a good idea. They should be open to all. Its always nice to see whats going on in other muslim communities even if its on the other side of the world. The trick, however, is not to get too specific ie. not to start breaking down into cities and states except where the community is vast that there is too much occuring and needs to be separated to avoid confusion.

Anyway I prefer the blue color, its more creative, relaxing and professional. The yellow seems a little too 'childish' and looks like one of those kid message boards, not that I go to them ;)

The name 'Cherry Blossom' (mentioned by srBarr i think?) is awesome and inviting, but too 'feminine' and might scare away some brothers :) Cherry and Blossom are both female names.

I dunno guys... I think this is all a lot of fun when we're writing nonsense things about trying out the board..
But I think maybe there should be a rule about not adding too many smileys to an Islamic post, or not going overboard with the colour etc.
I mean I can just imagine the posts we're going to get.. Ack!

Actually... Br explorer is right *gasp! I agree with you! :O*

The softness of vanilla doesn't really go spot on with the hue of the blue.

Can't we keep to the original colours?

Or try colours that matches and blends better... like if it's green, than it'll have different hues of green.

But somehow, if we're looking at colours that contrast and match well... I'd say.. try the vanilla with burgundy.. I think, it can give some richness, inshaAllah.
might scare away some brothers :) Cherry and Blossom are both female names.
Now, now.. do I hear an anticipation of intimidation felt? ;)

Its a COW pattern!!! :) :)  hahahahhaha, that's what the descriptions said.

Anyways what I did was I viewed the colors by most popular ones, and then selected from those on the first 2 or 3 pages, obviously the cow pattern didn't make their top cut, but i still liked it.
