When you need to fall asleep and you can't just lay your head down and fall asleep, what do you do??

I learned from a Sis, and it works for me, I lay down and count backwards from 100. and when I am almost fainting it goes something like this "45" "44" "43" "49" "47" "17" "16" oh wait a min "100" "75" zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz

hehe;-D

Insomnia
Foods high in tryptophan, magnesium, and thiamin (vitamin B1) may help to induce sleep. A glass of warm milk with honey, along with a snack of almonds or turkey at bedtime, will make you feel sleepy due to their tryptophan content, which raises levels of serotonin in the brain.
Mega-Recipes
We believe that it's possible to manage and/or improve certain conditions through what you eat. When we create "Mega-Recipes" for an ailment, we strive to include the maximum number of the nutrients that are shown to have benefit for that ailment. We also expect the Mega-Recipe to contain at least 25% of recommended intakes for those nutrients. See the list of recipes that have met our criteria for this ailment.

What You Should Eat & Why

magnesium
Studies have shown that insomnia may be a sign of magnesium deficiency. Magnesium may also be a natural muscle relaxant.
Leading Food Sources of magnesium:
Spinach, Avocados, Almonds, Quinoa, Barley, Sunflower seeds, Pumpkin seeds, Chocolate, Oysters, Brazil nuts, Amaranth, Buckwheat

thiamin (vitamin B1)
Thiamin helps convert carbohydrates in food into energy, and it also promotes healthy nerves and enhances mood. Low levels of thiamin have been found in people who suffer from insomnia.
Leading Food Sources of thiamin (vitamin B1):
Asparagus, fresh, Mussels, Sunflower seeds, Tuna, Brazil nuts, Salmon, Pasta, wheat, Avocados, Oats, Rice, white, Wheat, Soy milk, Barley

Counting works fine for me, I count forwards starting with 0, the farthest I've made it to was 275. But as a college student, I'm sleepy 24 hours a day 7 days a week, so I don't need to count during school days :)

How do you fall asleep??
simply by thinking what my program for the next day should be.
nowadays we guys have such busy lifes so if youll start thinking of what youve to do the next day you surely will fall asleep another thing is to make a list in your mind of the things youve done well and the things youve done badly that day.
BUT
be warned :this runs you short the next day!!!!!!hihihi

When your mind is occupied with something rhythmic, more often than not, it will doze off. Thats why counting works for many people. Even better is to do dhikr - curl up with a tasbih in your hand and in no time time you'll be fast asleep :) And what better than to enter our closest-to-death state with words praising Allah...

slm,

By the time I hit the bed and position myself I'm 3 quarters of the way there already.

After reciting ayat Al-Kursi and others I'm gone.

I read myself to sleep. I read and read and read... well sometimes i just read. For me its the surest way to get to sleep.

One strange thing is that i can get to sleep on the London Underground where the trains make up to 140 db of noise, but at night constant whispering can stop me!

HAHAHAHAHAHAHA.....that's hillarious...reminds me of this movie I saw, someone was sleeping and the tape was playing of random car horns and the sound of engines, you know the basic city life. Well, it turned off, the guy woke up and switched it over to the other side, played it and went back to sleep. I guess he couldn't take the quietness, he needs the sounds of the city to goto sleep, waahahahahahahahahaha.

strange thing, I fall to sleep better with the lights on rather than off. When I'm really stressed out and I've had a nap earlier in the day, I start becoming tired around 3 or 4, but even then, I toss and turn for about an hour and a half after that. The worst thing must be not being able to fall asleep, especially when you have a big test or exam the next day.

assalmu alaikum,
I wake up a lot in the middle of the night, and I start doing tasbeeh to get back to sleep (when I'm aware enough to remember).  I don't know why it works.  I hope it's not because of the shaytan!

Thanks to the spinning world and the time difference, I call and torture my Brit sisters with my ramblings to sleep. And now, I have managed to induce Kathy and Eleanor ;-D

No, actually, I think of the day that just passed, what happened in the past... what will happen in the coming future... Kinda of having pictures in my head, and talking in my head and heart. Just one of those intimate moments... just you, and you and Allah.

Then... zzZZZzzzZZZzzzzZZZzzzzzzzz... never fails, mashaAllah.

you know, my dad was telling me just yesterday how he falls asleep, isn't that weird??? but anyway...my dad was telling me there's this one book, i think it's called Prisms of Quran or Islam or something like that, it's in urdu, and my dad said that book is sooo interesting that whenever he begins reading it, he doesn't want to stop and he reads and reads and reads until he falls asleep :)

and you know when i was younger, and i couldnt' go to sleep, my dad would tell me to say La Illaha Illah Allah 1,000 times! :O that usually did the trick, because i would be soo busy counting, i would end up asleep before i knew it :)

hehe okee, gots to jet, wasalaams

I was watching a report on Sky News this evening, in which new research points to 7 hours being the optimum amount of sleep that one should have per night.

Here's the link to the report in the Washington Post: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A11519-2002Feb14.html

On a related note, i wonder if anyone has experienced this weird thing when reading themselves to sleep. I often find that in the very last moments before i doze off, my mind drifts away from the book in front of me, yet i imagine myself still reading it, except that the story i'm reading is nowhere on the pages in front of me.. its just my mind making it up as i go along. Strange.
