does anyone know for a fact whether or not the slang terms "geez" and "sheesh" are haram? somebody told me they were because when you say "geez" it's like saying Jesus. does anyone know for sure?

I dunno about 'geez' cuz thats like typikal amerikan slang ;)
But 'sheesh'??? Surely theres no harm in saying that, i mean it don't mean anything haraam, does it?

I think your intentions are more important here. If it was your intention to take Jesus' name in vain, then it's a bad idea.

But overall, I find generally that to avoid things where there is some degree of doubt is better. I know there is a hadith to support this view:

From Abu 'Abdullah an-Nu'man ibn Bashir, may Allah be pleased with both of them, that he said, "I heard the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, saying "The halal is clear and the haraam is clear and in between them are ambivalent matters which many people do not know. Whoever guards himself against ambivalent matters has secured his deen and his honour. Whoever falls into ambivalent matters will fall into the haram.."

So if there is any doubt in your mind as to whether you are doing right or wrong, then better avoid the issue altogether, for you surely don't get any extra rewards for saying "Jeez" or "Sheesh".
I find in times of exasperation or trouble a simple "Alhamdulillah" does wonders for the nerves.. :)

Salaams,

The imam at our masjid had us saying SubhanALLAH at EVERYTHING. i know that is off topic but it just made me remember the good old days and put a smile on my face :) we always said it and still got our point across whether it was annoyance, frustration, surprise or whatever. it works!! and inshaALLAH u get will get the good deeds for remembering Allah.
