New Jersey Islamic Speakers Bureau

"Presenting Islam in Public and Private Schools"

The New Jersey Islamic Speaker's Bureau (NJISB) is a sub-chapter of the Islamic Speaker's Bureau located in Orange County, California.  The goal of the bureau is to correct misinformation about Islam, as well as give a human face to the fastest growing faith in America, by supplementing the existing education of Islam in World History and Social Studies.  The ISB has been adopted by the Islamic Networks Group located in the bay area and has been very successful in its goal.  For more information on Islamic Networks Group (ING) please visit www.ing.org.

The New Jersey Islamic Speaker's Bureau has been established to follow the same guidelines and principles of the ISB.  The mission is to eliminate stereotypes, thru educating.

How does it work?

At teacher's invitation, the trained Muslims speaker gives a presentation that combines a formal presentation using transparencies or the blackboard with an informal interaction with the students.  The bureau will cover variety of topics such as:

Islamic beliefs and practices and how they relate to
everyday life in America,

Muslim population around the world, including America,

Islamic holidays and celebrations

In addition speakers may tailor their presentations to cover broader topics such as:

Social Issues for American Muslim Teens, Women, and Families

Stereotypes and Perceptions - Myths versus Reality

The Need for the Program

Although the study of Islam is now required in all 50 states, any or all of the following problems may affect the teaching of Islam in the classroom, depending on the resources available at the state, or school district level:

1.  Some teachers skip the unit on Islam altogether out of fear of teaching a subject they know little about.

2.  Inadequate and biased teaching resources on Islam: In recent years, for example, some schools showed the film, "Not Without My Daughter" during the unit of Islam.  This movie portrayed Irani women as oppressed objects of abusive men.

3.  The susceptibility of teachers to negative images of Islam in the media and Hollywood films.  Teachers, who are for the most part overworked and underpaid, are like anyone else in this regard.  They rarely have had college training about Islam or related subjects.  They have little time to distinguish myths from realities and tend to believe what they see and read.

These factors, compounded by the negative images of Islam and Muslims in America's popular culture, often result in a curriculum that leaves students either as ignorant of Islam as when they started or with their negative perceptions reinforced.  It is in this context and to counteract these problems that the speakers bureau program operates.

We must introduce ourselves to this society, and we must do it properly, authentically, and do it well or else we will continue to be misunderstood and misrepresented.

How can you help?

As a new bureau starting out in New Jersey, we are in dire need of
donations.  This dawah work will not only benefit us but also our future generation.  Allah rewards those who spend in His way, and this Insha'Allah will be for our benefit here in the duniya and the akhira.  We need the help and support of as many possible.  If you are interested in donating or becoming a trained speaker for the bureau, please email NJISB@yahoo.com.  Or you may give your donation to a representative of NJISB.
