Quotes that Keep Ya Going...

I think everyone has those kinds of days where they're down and depressed, not sure of where to go, what to do, or how to get there.   Usually, to combat this, I turn to inspirational books, poems, and quotes that I've collected or received as gifts.

What sorts of quotes, stories, books, poems help keep you going? Please share :)

One I really like is:

[quote]O believers, fear Allah and say the right thing. Allah will make your conduct (affairs) whole and sound and will overlook your errors. Whoever obeys Allah and His Messenger, has indeed attained to a great success.
(Quran 33:70-71)

This is one of my favourite poems.

Its called "Footprints"

One night a man had a dream.
He dreamt he was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Across the sky flashed scenes from his life.
For each scene, he noticed two sets of footprints in the sand:
one belonging to him, and the other to the Lord.
When the last scene of his life flashed before him,
he looked back at the footprints in the sand.
He noticed that many times along the path of his life
there was only one set of footprints.
He also noticed that it happened at the very lowest and saddest
times in his life.
This really bothered him and he questioned the Lord about it.
"Lord, You said that once I decided to follow you, You'd walk with me all
the way. But I have noticed that during the most troublesome times in my life, there is only one set of footprints. I don't understand why when I needed you most you would leave me."
The Lord replied,
"My son, My precious child, I love you and I would never leave you. During your times of trial and suffering, when you see only one set of footprints, it
was then that I Carried You."

it is they, they who do right.
They shall have all that they yearn for in the presence of their Sustainer,
such is the reward of those who do good,
so that God will divert from the the worst in their deeds
and give them their recompense
according to the best of that which they have done.

Mu'adh ibn Jabal, a great companion of the Prophet, Allah's peace be upon him, said:

"Knowledge is a comforting friend in times of loneliness, it is the best companion during travels, and it is the inner friend who speaks to you in your privacy. Knowledge is the discerning proof of what is right and what is wrong, and it is the positive force that will help you surmount the trials of comfort, as well as those of hardships. Knowledge is your most powerful sword against your enemy, and finally, it is your most dignifying raiment in the company of your close companions."

Amazing is the affair of the Muslim! When something good happens to him, he is thankful and that makes things even better for him; and when something bad befalls him, he is patient, and that turns things better for him. (Muslim)

Those are great, I guess for me its a line I came across years ago, I can't even remember where I picked it up,

[i]'Be kind for everyone you meet is fighting a harder battle.'[/i]

It reminds you that the world doesn't revolve around you, encourages you to be patient, and kinda makes you realize that you don't know whats going on in the minds of those that surround you and what they hold in their hearts and so you can't truly judge them, kind of humbles you urging you to think of others before yourself...I think I could go on for ages, I guess thats what makes quotes so powerful, how much meaning they shield behind their veils of simplicity...

"The Sunnah is like the Ark of Noah.
Whoever embarks upon it reaches salvation and
whoever refuses it is drowned."

i like this one too:

'When a slave stands and prays, all his sins are brought and placed on his head and shoulders.
Every time he bows or prostrates, some of them fall from him.'

but i cant remember where i got it from?  ???

We were taught this in a class once but don't remember the source or exact words, but it's something to think about:

[code]

One of the Saliheen was asked how he kept his khushoo in prayer. (concentration & humbleness, etc)

He said, 'I imagine that Allah is before me, that the Angel of Death is at my back, that the gardens of Jannah are to my right, that the fires of Jahannum are on my left and that I am standing on the Sirat.'

as salaamu alaykum,

this is the ultimate list of quotes for me.

[color=black]

Qur'an

Be sure that We shall test you with something of fear and hunger, some loss in goods or lives or the fruits of your toil.

But give glad tidings to those who patiently persevere - those who say, when afflicted with calamity: "To Allah We belong, and to Him is our return."

They are those on whom descend blessings from their Lord, and Mercy, and they are the ones that receive guidance.

(al-Baqara, 155-157)

You shall certainly be tried and tested in your possessions, and in your personal selves; and you shall certainly hear much that will grieve you, from those who received the book before you and from those who worship partners besides Allah.  But if you persevere patiently, and guard against evil - then that will be of great resolution.

(Ali' Imran, ayah 186)

Do people think that they will be left alone to say, "We believe", and that they will not be tested? We did test those before them, and Allah will certainly know those who are true from those who are false.

(al-Ankaboot, ayah 2-3)

O My servants who believe! Truly, spacious is My earth; therefore worship Me, and Me alone.  Every soul shall have a taste of death: in the end to Us shall you be brought back.

But those who believe and work deeds of righteousness, to them shall We give a home in Jannah: mansions beneath which flow rivers - to live therein forever. An excellent reward for those who do good - for those who persevere in patience, and put their trust in their Lord and Cherisher.

(al-Ankaboot, 56-59)

Pray for help from Allah, and wait in patience and constancy: for the earth is Allah's, to give as a heritage to such of His servants as He pleases; and the end is best for those who do good.

(al-Aa'raaf, 128)

O you who believe! persevere in patience and constancy; vie in such perseverance; strengthen each other; and fear Allah, that you may prosper.

(Ali' Imran, 200)

... Nor can a soul die except by Allah's leave, the term being fixed as by writing.  If any do desire a reward in this life, We shall give it to him; and if any do desire a reward in the Hereafter, We shall give it to him. And swiftly shall We reward those that serve us with gratitude.

How many of the prophets fought in Allah's way, and with them fought large bands of God-fearing people?  But they never lost heart if they met with disaster in Allah's way, nor did they weaken in will nor give in.  And Allah loves those who are firm and steadfast.

All that they said was: "Our Lord! Forgive us our sins and anything we may have done that transgressed our duty: Establish our feet firmly, and help us against those that resist Faith."

And Allah gave them a reward in this world, and the excellent reward of the Hereafter. For Allah loves those who do good.

(Ali' Imran, 145-148)

Hadeeth

Be mindful of Allah, you will find Him before you.  Get to know Allah in prosperity and He will know you in adversity. Know that what has passed you by was not going to befall you and that what has befallen you was not going to pass you by.  And know that victory comes with patience, relief with affliction, and ease with hardship.

Be mindful of Allah, and Allah will protect you.  Be mindful of Allah, and you will find Him in front of you.  If you ask, ask of Allah; if you seek help, seek help of Allah.  Know that if an entire nation were to to gather together to benefit you with anything, it would benefit you only with something that Allah had already prescribed for you.  And that if they gather together to harm you with anything, they would harm you only with something Allah had already prescribed for you. The pens have been lifted and the pages have dried.
[Tirmidhi]

Whenever Allah wants good for a person, He subjects him to adversity.
[Bukhari]

A muslim is not afflicted by hardship, sickness, sadness, worry, harm, or depression - even if pricked by a thorn, but Allah forgives his sins because of that.
[Bukhari and Muslim]

... One is afflicted (with difficulties and tests) in accordance with his deen. If his deen is firm, his affliction is made harder, and if his deen is weak, his affliction is made lighter. A believer continues to be subjected to adversity until he walks on the surface of the earth without a sin.

This is an old Irish Blessing, typically given either to someone who is moving far away, or at someone's wake / funeral. The last time I heard this was when my Dad was giving a eulogy for his best friend, who past away after a long battle with cancer:

Blessing For the Journey

May the road rise to meet you.
May the wind be always at your back.
May the sun shine warm upon your face.
And rains fall soft upon your fields.
And until we meet again, my friend,
May God hold you in the hollow of His hand.

Always brings a wee tear to me eye...

Here's another, a little more light hearted:

Blessing for the Home and Hearth

May those who love us, love us.
And those who don't love us, may God turn their hearts.
And if he doesn't turn their hearts,
May he turn their ankles,
So we know them by their limping!

Or this one:

May you be in Heaven a full 1/2 hour before the Devil knows you're dead!

;D

The Irish have great spirit and humor too!

MashaALlah! Dude... I didn't know that is an Irish Blessing. :)

A sister gave me a notepad and pencil holder that bore those words, as a farewell gift before I began my a journey to a faraway land, seeking knowledge. (I'm so melodramatic :))

It's still with me, now, propped at my bookcase (though the pencil has broken :( )

Glad you liked them!

Here’s one my dear Aunt Eileen says for grace at Thanksgiving:

St. Brigid’s Blessing

[i]God bless the poor,
God bless the sick,
God bless our human race;
God bless our food,
God bless our drink,
And our homes,
O God,
Embrace.
[/i]

This year, after the “Amens”, my 3-1/2 year old son piped up and said, “Bissmilla”. My Irish /Fijjian / Canadian boy…he’s a good lad!

My wife (Fijiian Muslim) went to the effort of finding the lyrics to this tune, after hearing it in an old movie. Of course, she found it at Aunt Eileens…

[i]He is my dear, my darling one,
His eyes so sparkling, full of fun,
No other, no other, can match the likes of him!
He is my dear, my darling one,
My smiling and beguiling one,
I love the ground he walks upon,
My little Irish boy!
[/i]

She sang my boy to sleep every night as an infant with that one, and occasionally still sings it to him when he needs conforting.

On the day of Uhud:

Abu Sufyan went up the mountain and yelled: "Is Muhammad among you?"

The prophet [saw] said to his companions, "Do not answer him".

They did not answer.

Then Abu Sufyan asked "Is the son of Abi Quhaba (Abu Bakr) among you?"

The prophet [saw] said, "Do not answer". They did not answer.

Abu Sufyan asked again: "Is Umar son of Al-khattab among you?"

The prophet [saw] said again, "Do not answer!" and they did not answer.

Abu Sufyan then added: "All these people have been killed, for were they alive, they would have replied."

At that, Umar could not help saying  "You are a liar, O enemy of Allah! Allah has kept what will make you unhappy."

Abu Sufyan then shouted,  'Superior may be Hubal (their idol)!'

The Prophet [saw] said to his companions: "Why do you not reply?"

"What shall we say?", they asked him

"Say: Allah is more Sublime and Exalted and Mightier as well."

He said: 'Al Uzza (the idol) is ours but you have no Uzza".

"Why do you not reply?", the prophet [saw] said.

"What shall we say?", they inquired

He [saw] said, "Say Allah is our Helper and Protector, but you have no helper or protector!"

Abu Sufyan said: "Victory in war goes by turns. Today is a vengeance for that day at Badr."

The Prophet [saw] told `Umar to get up and answer Abu Sufyan and say,

"Allah is Most High and Most Glorious. No, they are not the same. Our dead are housed in Paradise; but yours are in the Fire."

My brother, if you shed tears for me
and wet my grave with them in humility
Then light the candle for them with my remains
and march with them towards eternal glory.

My brother, if I die, we'll meet our loved ones
for the Gardens of my Lord are prepared for us
and their birds have fluttered around us
so blessed are we in the homes of eternity.

My brother, the armies of darkness will be swept away,
and there will shine in the world a new dawn.
So let your soul go after its desires [in mujahada]
You will see the dawn staring at us from afar.
