Yup here it is .. a chat applet for a trial period. Try clicking on it from the top menu and try it out. We'll see if it substantially increases the load time, or if it is useful or beneficial.

Once you click, let it connect and load, and then choose the tab that says # Madinat_a...

and it will drop you into the MadinatulMuslimeen room.

For me, it's able to load the applet. But it gives error connecting to the site.

Anybody else also facing similar problems ?

I had no problem getting in,  but i had a problem while i was in there.  I typed something and the response said something about talking to myself.  I kept typing and the same response came out over and over again,  I felt it was mocking me.  and after a while (45 min or so)  i decided that i liked talking to myself, but it still mocked me, so i got very angry, but it wouldn't respond with anything else i typed except it tried to make me feel lonely and small, so i finaly left.

salam,
also - there won't be any way to separate brothers and sisters will there
a valid concern, but i think that everyone is mature enough to follow the general guidelines of islamic adab and haya'. if one is worried about it then they should not enter.

i rather like that it's like a public forum and open..much better than private chatting on IM and other stuff.. anyone can pop in, we can discuss issues of the board, answer any questions, mods can vote on stuff.. kind of like a meeting room :)
i think chatting can have negatives and positives, as long as we avoid the negatives and keep the same level of discussion and islamicness we do on the board in the chat room it should be ok. i know many ppl have benefitted from dawah in chat rooms or from meeting and getting to know other muslims, so Allahu alam.
Sorry Sis Janna, can't find the # Madina_a... tab.
When the java applet loads look at the top and look for Location and then Status and to the right of that you should see a happy mouth? and #Madina click on that.
For me, it's able to load the applet. But it gives error connecting to the site.
dunno about that.. might be your location?

Does regular ICQ work for you?

Sometimes firewalls can cause problems blocking these types of connections.

Very cool. 8)
I am alone right now, but will be able to join someone when I come back inshaAllah. I have it open in another window so I can continue to do other tasks.

[slm],

It seems like a really cool idea. Only problem is that it takes a long time to load up. I was also having a hard time these past one or two days entering the regular site, does it have anything to do with the new chat applet, or that my new Dell needs to be returned?... :-/  :-/.  :-/....

i think the problem is that it only allows one person in the chat room at a time.

I don't think that's it b/c I've chatted with a few people in there a couple of times. The applet is taking awhile to load today. It wouldn't connect. I clicked on Chat a few times until it loaded correctly. Hmm try again...

How do u get into the Madina chat? Is there a way of getting there from the
Madina Boards?

Assalamulaikum

Is the chat open to everyone or just members?
If open to all, can someone post the link since I cant find any way of getting in

The Madina Constitution rules apply to the Chat as well (for now). Therefore the Chat is only open to Madina Citizens. This is so that if there are any problems or abuse the person can be tracked down and kil... err I mean taken care of ;)

*UPDATE: This has been made more airtight.  If a person is not logged in they cannot enter chat. A guest cannot enter chat. Username is logged before one enters chat.  The actual text of chat is not logged.  However abuse, such as impersonating usernames, may be reported ASAP.

ok i did something realllyyyyyyyyyyyy weird... i didn't like the web based chat cause it was too slow... and i didn't like the java chat cause it doesn't show who's online ... so i combined the two in some really bad code mixed up... so let's see if it holds.. try it out inshallah

Sis Jannah, i guess whenever we rename ourselves the index page of message board loses track of us and doesn't show us as active chatters!!

Well this is how the code works.. when you enter the chat... it puts you as online... but if you click on Float and then close the background stqff it will think you logged out so you won't appear on the onlinechat users list...because the applet is pretty independent.. the only way it knows u logout is when you close the background window it runs a close script that takes you off the list..

if you change your nick itself in the irc window it shouldn't matter though.

Looks like the chat is working pretty good.. Make sure you can run java applets.. sometimes it doesn't load right so click on reload until it comes in right.  You should see two TABS at the top and one should say #Madinat_Al-Muslimeen if it all came in right.

Here's some info on what some of the stuff does on the applet:

The Various Buttons on IrCQ-Net
At the head of the IrCQ-Net applet there are 6 buttons. Each button launches a different dialog or action. The options are Join, Nick, Search, Rooms, Options, Float/Embed:

Join: Pops up a dialog with an ICQ rooms list and let you choose which room to get into. You can also create a new room by filling the "New room" edit box.
Nick: Pops up a dialog with your current nick and gives you the option to set yourself a new nick. If you choose a nick which is already taken, the Nick dialog will pop up again.
Search: Pops up a dialog where you can search a certain text on the whole web or on the ICQ web site.
Rooms: Pops up a windows listing all the current channels on the IrCQ-Net (not channels with +s mode) with their topic and the amount of users inside them. Similar to the /list command on external IRC clients.
Options: Here you can set several options for yourself such as Nickname, ICQ number, Color setting etc...
Float: Makes the Applet window float, meaning you can now change his position and size. If you press again, the window will get embed again ad you won't be able to resize it.

The Different sections on the IrCQ-Net applet
The top left side contains a Drop Down list of the channels available. A channel is signified with a number sign (#).
Below the channels list, near the "Location" title, you can find buttons of the rooms which you are currently at. The first button will always be "status" which is a window where you can find information about some actions that took place.
On the right hand side there are the names (nicknames) of the participants in the chat. There are two special characters that precede some names: @ indicates a person that can issue commands to control the room (op), such as throwing someone out of a room. + indicates a user with 'voice', only users with voice can speak in a moderated room.
On the left hand side you can find the main section, which is where the chat session takes place. On top of each main section there is a colored stripe which servers as a title for the current channel. The name of the channel is written here with a short topic.
At the bottom of the applet there is a text box where you can write any text you want to say to the current channel or query window. You can pick up a certain color from 16 different colors of the colored stripe, or let the applet chose a random/highlight/gradient text from the Drop Down list. You can also set the text to be bold and/or underlined by pressing the "B" and the "U" buttons respectively. when your done editing your text click on the "Send" button (the one with the lips icon) or just press ENTER in order to send your text.
You can also send Action/Emotions lines by choosing it from the right bottom Drop Down list, above the "send emotion" title.

btw you can join a channel called #islam if you type /join #islam and there's some other ppl on there from other web portals..

so some ppl might be listed on the chat here but they might be on different channels or not even speaking to each other!!

Try clicking on reload a few times until it fully connects to the network and loads the #Madinat_al-Muslimeen channel...  It's java so it should be compatible with the latest browsers..

I had a couple of interesting chat sessions, one with 'brother' and 'shuja' other with 'lucid9' and 'Nawawi', i tried to save the chat session but it didn't allow me to select and copy the next. Doesn't the applet support it ?

I tried it only once so it might be just a mistake on my part (must have used the wrong mouse button :P ). So does that work? plus, are the chat sessions being automatically logged at the server? What if someone wants to 'report' something, where shall the log come from ?!

Hope i'm not being overly concerned about it.

I don't think u can save the chat session with that applet.  Cut&paste from java?? dunno if that works either... As for reporting.. it does log who goes in there and who goes out and the times.. what they do in there though isn't logged not on my server at least...by the cia/mossad etc Allahu alam  :o

It's kinda like mirc.. u log on to through this program to a chat world.. Right at first it sticks u on the #Madina channel where other Madina people portal into.. but anyone can go to other places... and also interestingly enough i wonder if u could use mirc to get onto #Madina instead of using the java...

@broHanif  do you see a cofeecup in the top left corner of the grey box?? if so it's probably trying to load.. the applet itself takes some time to download and run.. and longer if ur on a dialup connection
