I'm using win 98 at the moment.. I'm thinking of upgrading to win xp or changing to linux...  i use unix at Uni so I know a bit of the o/s...
but which one is more user-friendly? i've seen win xp at my friend's house (haven't played around with it)... it looks much more improved than the previous versions...

wa alaikum us-salaam,

Go for a dual-boot system, installing both linux and win xp. You can find instructions for dualing if you do a search on the web. Win XP is much more stable than the joke OS win 98.  Otherwise, there is not much difference in user-friendliness between them. Red hat linux is good as well (needs a more sleeves up involvement then win xp). Do check whether your software runs under linux. If the company doesn't support linux then check for its clones.

If you are familar with UNIX and don't want to have to dual boot

Get a Mac, yeah I said it, a Mac with OS X : Jaguar

Actually they've come down in price a lot, you can get a dual CPU G4 for a pretty decent price.

Windowz (all versions) is all garbage in my opinion. Actually anything Microsoft is pretty much useless. I would petition my drive and run Linux redhat on one side and windowz xp on the other. Linux is great and you can find shareware for all kinds of applications such as Latex for word processing -- compatibility is a major problem and anytime you need to do something at work or school you will have problems that’s why I suggest also running windows xp.
Redhat is the best distribution for a beginner Linux users because it does come with a lot of technical support if you buy the package – you are really only buying the technical service and not the software because it is all shareware. It very stable and much more powerful then any Microsoft platform – buy significant more difficult technically to use but I don’t think you can really get away from this (power Vs ease of use) more powerful systems are more difficult to utilize.
Buying a Mac is also a really good suggestion yes they have come down in price --but they are still a little pricey. They are much more stable, better all around and far more powerful – they have a Unix style system. Also can run Microsoft application such as word in them with special software so compatibility is less of a problem. Maybe a better option then Linux but cost is a major factor.
I only realized this the after taking a grad course in University on computer systems. I am not a computer scientist so take my advise with a grain of salt.

It's all a matter of principle. Microsoft is suing Linux for coming out with "Lindows"....saying that Linux will be harmful competition.  Kind of amusing considering that Microsoft is a monopoly.

Upstart battles Microsoft in name game

Lindows.com hopes court will invalidate software giant's trademark before trial

By SHOWWEI CHU

TECHNOLOGY REPORTER

Thursday, January 9, 2003 – Print Edition, Page B11

This month, Judge John Coughenour of the Federal District Court in Seattle is expected to decide whether or not to revoke Microsoft Corp.'s Windows trademark.

Microsoft, which sells the dominant Windows operating system (OS) for personal computers, is suing Lindows.com Inc., a similar-sounding upstart, for trademark infringement.

So far, Microsoft's plea for a temporary injunction against Lindows.com, which sells a modified version of the Linux OS, has been refused by a U.S. court. In the meantime, Lindows.com is hoping to win a summary judgment to invalidate the Windows trademark.

Regardless of how the case ends up, however, it has already made something of a celebrity out of Lindows.com founder Michael Robertson, a industry renegade with a history for controversy.

Mr. Robertson said in an interview he knew that when he launched his San Diego-based company he likely would be sued by Microsoft. But the 35-year-old entrepreneur never imagined the name of his company would be the subject of a legal dispute.

"It's crazy," Mr. Robertson said. "This has nothing to do with Microsoft thinking that consumers are going to confuse Microsoft Windows XP and Lindows OS. That's absurd. What this is about is Microsoft slowing down a potential competitor."

Mr. Robertson is not only the founder of Lindows.com but also the one who started MP3.com, an on-line music service that allowed users access to its vast recordings library, which became a thorn in the side of the music industry.

Shortly after its Internet music service was launched three years ago, MP3.com was sued by the Recording Industry Association of America, the industry trade group that represents all the major record labels. RIAA asked a U.S. court to shut down the service and the judge in the case complied and later set a penalty of $25,000 (U.S.) a song.

MP3.com was forced to pay millions in penalties and in May, 2001, the company was sold to Vivendi Universal for $372-million in cash and stock.

Mr. Robertson continues to be a thorn in Microsoft's side even outside of court. Earlier this month, he revealed to a technology news Web site that he was the mystery backer and creator of a contest that is offering $200,000 to anyone who can run the Linux OS on Microsoft's Xbox video game console, a PC with its own proprietary OS.

He said the motivation behind the contest was: "I don't want any company . . . dictating to me what software I can and can't put on my personal computer."

Mr. Robertson, who has a bachelor's degree in cognitive science from the University of California in San Diego and ran two startups before gaining fame with MP3.com, has also angered some people in the open source community.

Bruce Perens, author of a series of open source books, accused him last April in an open letter on the Internet of breaking the terms of the so-called GNU Public Licence under which Linux is released. Since Lindows OS is a version of Linux, an OS developed by thousands of volunteer programmers around the world, the company is required to make public the source code along with the modified software under that licence agreement.

Referring to the licensing portion of the Lindows.com's Web site, Mr. Robertson said his company adheres to the terms and that "we're good citizens of Linux."

What's next for his Lindows.com company? In its 16-month history, Lindows.com has launched version 3.0 of its OS, and wants to get computers running its OS onto store shelves, Mr. Robertson said. Right now, consumers can buy Lindows computers on-line at Walmart.com or through mail-order catalogues, but they can't buy them at a store, he said.

"That has to be the next step we take to grow our business," he said.

"If we do that, then I think you'll see Linux quickly surpass Macintosh as the No. 2 desktop OS system," he said.

[slm],

I installed RH Linux yesterday and I checked the option for dual boot. But when I go to boot my system it hangs at the GRUB prompt, anyone has any idea why that happens or what I can do to correct it?
I had to boot from a disk and do fdisk /mbr to get rid of the dual boot and then I could boot through windows.
