as salaamu alaykum,

I've read some of his work and he seems.. uhh.. totally brilliant mashaAllah.  I understand that there is some controversy surrounding him however.. at ISNA, Sh. Hamza Yusuf described his work as excellent for the most part, though some of it is 'problematic'.

Any idea what this is in reference to?

(I would just like to know what the issues of dissension are.. no trash talking, please :))

Also, feel free to madina message me about this if you'd prefer.

Jazakam Allahu khayran.

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

wa alaykum as salaam wa rahmatAllah,

I've only read a few of his articles that I've found online, but he strikes me as someone of extreme intelligence, erudition and someone with deep roots in the shari' sciences.  He reminds me quite a bit of Dr. Abdul Hakeem Jackson, though I'd say Dr. Jackson is a bit more.. hmm..'mainstream' and accepted in the community.

You can read some interesting reviews of some of his stuff here.

btw - Dr. Jackson recommended "The Authoritative and Authoritarian in Islamic Discourses" to me at isna, so u might want to look into that also.

Does anyone have Dr. Khaled Abou Fadl's address? Or at least tell me which university he is at right now. I have info on both UCLA law school and University of Texas. Which is current?

Dr. Abou Al Fadl was featured in an LA Times an article about Islam and dogs, and I would like to ask him to help me refute a very racist and anti-Muslim article called "Dogs Not Having Their Day in Islamic Countries, by Orlando Sentinel syndicated columnist Kathleen Parker. The article (12/4/02) was ostensibly about cruelty toward dogs in Muslim countries, but it was really an article bashing all Muslims and Islamic civilization.

Any help appreciated.

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

Today at Barnes and Noble I read through 'the Place of Tolerance in Islam', a collection of essays centered around a work by Dr. El Fadl on tolerance.. with short essays by many other contemporary scholars (Amina Wadud, John Esposito, Abid Ullah Jan, etc) refuting or agreeing with his views.

There were some things he said that I found a bit shady.. such as that, there are paths to salvation outside of islam, and that the Qur'an should be read as a 'moral reader' completely open to interpretation based on context and society, as well as the usual criticism of the 'Puritan' movement of Islam for stifling the traditionally tolerant Muslim civilization.

The book was an interesting read because many of the other scholars refuted Dr. El Fadl quite soundly on some of these points, particularly Abid Ullah Jan, and I found it overall to be very balanced.

Has anyone else read this book?  I'd appreciate your thoughts.

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

Se7en, I haven't read it, but I came across some exceprts from it online.  After looking at it, I wasn't very interested in reading up on Khaled.

I'm curious why people said he was brilliant, if he has such beliefs?

I think bhaloo brings up an interesting point.

If a person has one shady work, does that mean we should put the label of "deviant/shady/messed up" on him?

Or if a person has one brilliant work, does that mean we start praising the author for being a brilliant scholar, thinker, worker, etc?

I think what we often do is read a couple of books by an author, or hear a couple of speeches by a speaker, and if we like (or dislike) the way they are presented, then we begin to praise (or defame) the author/speaker instead of praising those particular books/speeches that we came across.  I don't think that's always wise.

There are brilliant people who have committed major blunders.   And there are too many examples of this to mention.

Similarly, there are shady people who have written or said things that are some of the most brilliant things ever mentioned by a human being.  There are also *many* examples of this.

Wallahu ta'ala a'lam.

P.S. For those who read my post in the "Marriage" thread, this post should complement what I said there.
