Hey you guys might of heard, that here up North in Canada, the liberal Government is planning to regalize marijuana for recreational purposes. We already have it legal for medical purposes but now its recreational time ;) . They are going to allow an individual to carry 30 grams, according to a local news paper that enough for " Sixty-four joints, 160 bowls or 320 hits from the bong. " what ever that means. Marijuana is already widely available here, you see it in colleges at high schools and on the streets. We already know that by marijuana being legalized its going to mean more strict and rigorous checks at the US border when we travel down south. So whats your opinion?? Is recreational use halal according to an islamic view?? OR is this just going cause more problems for society and muslim kids like we dont already have enough?  ???

[slm]  ..interesting post brother  :o!! I believe it is definetely going to cause more societal problems !! . This is something i came across:

In islam 'Every intoxicant and every thing that could make a person weak is prohibited.' (Mishkaat vol.2)

(this includes marijuana).IT is HARAAM

In sura Bakarah it is stated "Do not throw yourself into destruction with your own hands"

Why would we want to use marijuana .......When thre  are nicer things 2 get high on  like cheesecakes and ice cream !! [] [] ;) ;)

[wlm]
PS we must always look 4 the guidance from quran and sunnah .The guidance is their we just gotta apply it  :)

asalamu alaikum

Up here I find marijuana is actually becoming sort of staple

Its barely even seen as a drug as far as i can see.

Trust me, when they legalize it (cause they will and the govt grows tons of it) muslim kids will be in problems because of the whole smoking haram/makrooh debate.

See, some argue that pot has intoxicating effects, and so do cigarettes and so on.

This legalization creates one benefit: less black market activity and crime (ie. gangs and petty crime).  If people who are screwed up want to use it, its their loss, some would say.

Its up to muslims here to educate their children fully.  Although its said that other harder drugs will take its place, and extasy already has become commonplace, i think they will be avoided because they can be lethal the first time around.

As a medicine, I can't see how its much different than tylenol 3 or codeine.  The people it helps are in a whole lot of pain... i wonder what the ulema have to say about that.

but yeah, cheesecake is the best option for high.

salaam

the one thing about marijuana as pain relief or such is the delivery system.  When you are going through chemo your body starts rejecting things (throwing up).  With smoking, it goes directly into the lungs then the blood stream bypassing this effect and it i also an appetite stimulant.

Off-topic:

Modern research suggests that marijuana is a valuable aid in the treatment of a wide range of clinical applications. These include pain relief -- particularly of neuropathic pain (pain from nerve damage) -- nausea, spasticity, glaucoma, and movement disorders. Marijuana is also a powerful appetite stimulant, specifically for patients suffering from HIV, the AIDS wasting syndrome, or dementia. Emerging research suggests that marijuana's medicinal properties may protect the body against some types of malignant tumors and are neuroprotective.

Even tylenol can kill, that doesn't make it haraam.  What makes it haraam is the purpose it is used for, and the amount that is ingested.  Even cheesecake, if used for the purpose of getting high, is haraam ;)

As for its social aspect....I don't know how many times you guys have come into contact with it, but you can get marijuana ANYWHERE.  That proves that it is readily available.  It also proves that the those who want to stay away from it, can do so.

Society has always been full of problems, that's not something we can escape from.  And marijuana, alcohol, even heroin, is not something that has just recently become a big deal...these things have been around a lot longer than I have, and it's not something people haven't dealt with before.  The key here is awareness, and no I don't condone the legalization of marijuana, but its legalization is not necessarily a bad thing.  At least it will be out in the open then, and I won't get some hooded guy shoving a small ziplock thingy into my hand, expecting payment and a "thank-you-oh-how-i-needed-that."  (yeah, it actually happened.)

The unneeded tuppence.

Wasalaam.

Salaam Aleikum,
Even if they legalized marijuana here, I still would demand an alternate medication aside from marijuana.  IF its used for medical purposes though, for other people, then I guess its kinda like morphene--it gets you real hight too, but help with pain.

Ice-cream cake would be better for me though!!  :)

Is this a typo or intended. If intended, the mental picture it drew was quite amusing.  :D

Salaam Aleikum Jannah,
Yes, I did write about Buddhism to let everyone know my background because I was Buddhist before  :)  and Yes I am a Muslim now.  I took Shahada on 8/31/02.  I don't know if you remember but some of us a while back decided to do a study group to study the Qur'an together on a yahoo group?  Well, we did it for a while but unfortunately I guess our schedules just didn't work out.... but anyhow, while I was studying the Qur'an with them I realized the truth and took Shahada.    :)
And about oh a month and a half or so later I started wearing hijab outside of work but now I wear it at work too.  :)
Its funny cuz we got many new employees since I've started wearing hijab and some of them were telling me how some of the senior agents were all sitting around talking about how they can't believe I started covering... but to those new agents they never knew me befoe hijab so it didn't even phase them!!  :)

Here's what Mufti Ebrahim Desai said on this subject:

Partial Question: Another question is marijuana halal? It will be legal here in Canada as its all ready widely available. Do you think muslims in canada are at a risk with marijuana being legalized for recreational use?

Partial Answer:

"At the outset, we wish to state that it is reprehensible to smoke. According to many scholars, it is Haraam (strictly prohibited) as it is injurious to health....

The ruling of Marijuana is the same as smoking...

It also leads to addiction and is a stepping stone for harder drugs...

You are young and can make your life a meaningful and peaceful one. Don’t ruin your youth and future. Life is too precious to be wasted at anytime.

and Allah Ta'ala Knows Best

Mufti Ebrahim Desai".

So I trust him, and hwat he said at the end was especially nice.  People who smoke weed I've seen get loose on everything else, ie. drinks, harder stuff.  I can't see anyone being pious and stoned at the same time.

[glow=red,2,300]Jesus 'healed using cannabis' [/glow]

Duncan Campbell in Los Angeles
Monday January 6, 2003
The Guardian

[color=Red]Jesus was almost certainly a cannabis user and an early proponent of the medicinal properties of the drug[/color], according to a study of scriptural texts published this month. The study suggests that Jesus and his disciples used the drug to carry out miraculous healings.
The anointing oil used by Jesus and his disciples contained an ingredient called kaneh-bosem which has since been identified as cannabis extract, according to an article by Chris Bennett in the drugs magazine, High Times, entitled Was Jesus a Stoner? The incense used by Jesus in ceremonies also contained a cannabis extract, suggests Mr Bennett, who quotes scholars to back his claims.

"There can be little doubt about a role for cannabis in Judaic religion," Carl Ruck, professor of classical mythology at Boston University said.

Referring to the existence of cannabis in anointing oils used in ceremonies, he added: "Obviously the easy availability and long-established tradition of cannabis in early Judaism... would inevitably have included it in the [Christian] mixtures."

Mr Bennett suggests those anointed with the oils used by Jesus were "literally drenched in this potent mixture... Although most modern people choose to smoke or eat pot, when its active ingredients are transferred into an oil-based carrier, it can also be absorbed through the skin".

Quoting the New Testament, Mr Bennett argues that Jesus anointed his disciples with the oil and encouraged them to do the same with other followers. This could have been responsible for healing eye and skin diseases referred to in the Gospels.

[color=Red]"If cannabis was one of the main ingredients of the ancient anointing oil... and receiving this oil is what made Jesus the Christ and his followers Christians, then persecuting those who use cannabis could be considered anti-Christ," Mr Bennett concludes. [/color]

I'm not sure why you found that article humourous.
It offended me atleast as much as the comment by Jerry Falwell about the Prophet (saw). It's amazing how people here get away with disgracing and mocking Prophet Jesus (peace be upon him).   >:(
