What is Your Comfort Food?

What is your favorite food to munch on when feeling low or stressed?
Eat This. Improve Your Mood--A Lot

Feeling down in the dumps? Then eat comfort foods! Note, we did not say gorge on comfort foods. But when you indulge in moderation, there is definitely a place in a healthy, well-balanced diet for ice cream, chocolate, and pizza. Eating these foods really is good for us. Well, it's good for our moods, at least. When we get in a bad mood, our bodies start to think: COMFORT FOOD. WebMD reports that while some moods trigger food cravings--and vice versa--the real challenge is to keep both in check.

Foods that stress our bodies are sugar, caffeine, alcohol, and chocolate. Foods that support our bodies are water, vegetables, fruit, and oil-rich fish. WebMD says when we cut down on the "stressor" foods and eat more of the "supporter" foods, our mental health will improve. In one study, 88 percent of the people who tried doing this reported improved mental health. In addition, 26 percent said they had fewer mood swings, 26 percent had fewer panic attacks and anxiety, and 24 percent experienced less depression. The goal is to keep our blood sugar balanced and level throughout the day by eating good carbs: whole grain bread, beans, whole grain crackers, soy, apples, pears, peaches, and other fruits. Other types of carbohydrates--potato chips, commercial granola bars, cakes--flood too much sugar too fast into our bodies. That makes us produce insulin--lots of it.
Salaam Aleikum,

well, when I am depressed I don't eat but watch out!!! when I am angry--I will eat whatever is in my way--forget about munching!!  LOL

Well, I actually eat a lot anyways, and can usually outdo many guys but I do have to make it up with some vigorous exercising!!  And then exercising makes me want to eat some more...  LOL  :)

munching is what I do for pleasure, like junk food--during movies or sitting and chatting with friends.  But junk food is only good when you eat a little of it--if too much is eaten ya just feel yucky in the end.

I have to say that ice cream comforts this sister.  But the best stress buster is to hit the pavement with your tennis and do some raka's.

Ruqayyah.....I'm with you 100% !!! Chocolate~~~Mmmmmmmmm....but my favorite's are the Reese's cups, but then again the coconut filled ones are just as yummy. Well then there are the dark chocolate with almonds inside....ooh ooh and TRUFFLES!!!!!! ....I guess I don't have a favorite, hehehe...chocolate's the best! ;D

But about the whole stress thing, I do the opposite of what every normal person does...I stop eating... ??? Strange huh? My stress relief is going out and buying myself something absolutely unnecessary. :P

Can it be a mistake that "STRESSED" is "DESSERTS" spelled backwards ??  ;D

I'd agree with you there sis Zeph - eating just makes me fat and depressed instead of just depressed...

when i feel low or stressed, i cant really think of any specific food for comfort, i rather munch whatever i can get hold of ;)

to be honest, the thing that comfort me most at such time is going to sleep :)  just let go all the tears to the faithful pillow and lost myself in my slumberland ... i usually feel much better when i wake up  :)

Lay's Potato Chips.
A shamefully large bag and a Bebzi usually does the trick.

But when things are really working me, I have a CD with Abdul Basit - Surah Rahman and Ya Seen.  Works better than food. After listening to it once, I usually forget what was stressing me out.

Peanut Butter.

Chocolate works too...but if I'm stressed out...especially for exams..it's gotta be PB.

Wasalaam.

Anything with butter works for me.  Especially starchy foods like pasta and mashed potatoes.  I love chocolate but it doesn't necessarily make me feel better... it just makes me feel guilty.

Ice cream.  And more Ice cream.  And if it has caramel swirls or walnut chunks or bits of pecans, or maybe cookie dough, all the better.  <<sigh>>  But I am one of the strange few who doesn't really like chocolate all that much.  So it can't have very much chocolate in it.

Replusive, isn't it?  The Coke has to be warm to balance the coldness of the Fritos, so you see there is a certain amount of science involved. :P

I think they put something in Fritos, because I cannot stay away from them if they are around. I can't even walk past the rack in the store without hearing them call to me.

Peace,

Sparrow

no one has mentioned the greasy side of things yet.. When I am feeling lonely I like to eat fatty greasy foods like cheesburgers, fries, fried eggs, sausage (halal of course)....
If I am *very* stressed or worried about something I don't eat at all.

Mine is really not a food as when I'm too stressed I can't eat.
But when ill, cold, stressed, upset or whatever.

HOT TEA, a cup of hot tea, Earl Gray or plain tea with milk (not creamer :P )
and sugar. Talk about ' relax city'

A hot cup of tea mellows me out like one wouldn't believe.

Whats really weird is you would think with reg teas caffine I couldn't sleep??? Well it actually relaxes me and off to sleep I am.

Jannah we need a snooze/ sleeping smiley   :D

Yeah they do, it's called Monosodium Glutamate (MSG) and it's a flavor enhancer that makes everything taste really really good no matter what it is, and it all becomes totally addictive. You can't stop once you've started a package of whatever it is.  They also put it in bottled salad dressings.  It's also one of the main components of Chinese food which is why it's so popular.
But careful, it causes bad water retention and other bad things (like thirst for warm coke) for some people.
