hey Abdullah, long time no see buddy!  Alhamdulillah the wedding went really well.  It was held at my mum's parents' place and was the same place she and dad got married.

Ahh fiji weddings!  the cousins getting together and playing jokes on each other, the aunty network getting together and setting up the next match...of course it was drummed into me that next time it'll be my turn!  The men getting together and building the tin shed. The women getting together and cooking mountains of delicious food... I must have gained soo much weight!!  but post-Ramadan it was all good!  And finally when the bride and groom got together, no one saw much of them... i think they were at some secret island resort.

so anyways I'm back in NZ... and settling back into my groove.  Got a boys youth camp coming up and one of the bros is organising a youth conference mid-year.

anyways gotta dash, take care, wasalaam,
;-)Ahmed

i was intrigured to read your post.  i never knew that there were muslims in fiji.  are you originally from there, or was it chosen as the wedding site?

tell us a little history of fiji.  my brother visited the island briefly on his way to NZ, long time ago and really liked it.

lol yeah the tin shed is the classic fiji wedding venue... well it ain't exactly a shed, its a shelter setup in the yard with steel poles as posts and corrugated tin as the roof.  We have benches setup for the guests to sit on made from wooden planks and stands and similarly tables made from planks and taller stands for them to eat on.  The whole thing is decorated with green coconut palm leaves, flowers, coloured streamers, ribbons and balloons.  My parents had their nikkah done at exactly the same place so many years ago and now my big sis  ;D

hmm anyways yeah Fiji has many muslims... you'll usually find a masjid in every town.  The population is approx 50% indigenous fijians and 50% indian.  The indians migrated to fiji in the late 1800s when fiji was under Brittish colonian rule and were basically brought in as cheap labour to work in the sugar cane plantations... my great grandparents were among them.  Of the indian population i think approx 40% of them are muslim, with the majority being hindus and there are also sikhs and christians.  The indigenous fijians have mostly been converted to Christianity but i did notice some muslim converts among the indigenous fijians, alhamdulillah.... hmm what else? there are many established muslim schools.. my father used to be the principal of Suva Muslim High School and it used to be the top school in fiji in his day.

k thats enuff on Fiji... I'm startin to miss it too much :(

wasalaam,
;-)Ahmed
