My Hijaab Experience!

Praise God from whom all blessings flow!

Today I donned my hijaab.  I was nervous and somewhat afraid, however I remembered reading an article about remember "Who" you are doing it for.  I wore it church and felt "obedient".  It (hijaab) dealt with me inwardly, the whole reason why we (people in general) don't want to cover is because its about our super ego; the see me and all my splendor and not the God in me and His righteousness.  Hijaab is making me check myself and will I be obedient to God or will I obey man.

The Bible says, Matthew 10:28, "And fear not them which kill the body, but are not able to kill the soul: but rather fear him shich is able to destroy both soul and body in hell."

Thanks for all the support from the Sisters in the website. :-)

Praise the Lord!

I will never be the same.  I now know how Noah must have felt for being obedient to God.  My hijaab makes me check myself, over and over again.  The "who" I am and the life that I am supposed to live in Christ. A life of  self sacrificing.  I am learning submission; and humility and at the same time I am learning a different level of confidence.  I am seeing people in a different light, mostly women.  They look at me, some with disgust and some with pity; all with misunderstanding.  I have researched and found that I used to think that Muslim was a religion, however I have found it to  be a way of life, to submit to God.  Shouldn't we all, submit to God.

I am realizing that I am vain, and yet I am realizing that I have courage.  Courage to go against the norm in my church and my culture.  Trusting God and believing that I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

You who have already donned the hijaab, I admire you.  You are my
(s)heroes. :-)

Praise the Lord.

You asked me why a hijaab and I would like to tell you.  I love God with all my heart and He has instructed me in accordance with 1 Corinthians, chapter 11 in my Bible to cover my head.  In 1 Timothy, the 2nd chapter, God speaks to women to dress modestly.  I admire the hijaab worn by Islamic women and sought advice and instruction from sisters at this web site on whether my wearing one would be offensive to them.  After much prayer, much research, and much encouragement; I am being obedient to God.  I know that, "... We ought to obey God rather than men." Acts 5:29

Prayerfully I have not offended you.

[slm] sisters

this is really interesting. I am happy to hear that you want to dress modestly. Of course this is the characteristic of women who are obedient to God. It is encouraging that you find comfort in talking to musim sisters about this, however can I take it that you are wearing a head covering as part of your christian belief, similar to the way nuns also dress modestly and wear a head covering, or are you wearing the head covering that is typically characteristic of the muslim women head covering?

thankyou

I wear the head covering typical to Islamic women.  There is a sense of elegance and beauty in the hijaab.  I feel an unbridled sense of confidence in knowing that I am making God happy somehow. :-)

I agree there is a sense of pride and I am happy that you feel this way about wearing the head covering. Would you mind it if people mistakingly thought that you were muslim?...

No, I would not mind.  Some won't even ask.  People stereotype anyway.  I have the look of a woman who submits to God.  That is what is important to me.  I have the awareness that God is always with me and that is making me a better person all around.  Thanks for asking :-).  I also feel connected to my sisters in this new city and I am learning what is myth about Islam and what is the truth.

Hi theLordshandmaiden,

I have a couple of queries, if u don't mind:)

1. I have heard that Bible now exists in 39 different versions. Is that true?and,

2. Does God tell/order women to cover their head/cover modestly in all the versions of Bible (no matter how many they are)?

May Allah guide u to the Right Path(Ameen).

Thank u.

Hi!

I don't know how many versions there are of the Bible; I only seek to understand the one I have and of the translations that I have read, covering is consistant.  However, just as all Muslimahs are not in hijaab, for whatever reason, all Christian women are not covered.  It is a decision that only God can lead one to.

God bless :-)

         AsalamAlayKum,
Peace and e-Greetings to People of Earlier Scripture and The Final Scripture.

The same 1 Corinthians, chapter 11 verse that has inspired you has also inspired
many many many African American Christian sisters of various denominations
throughout the United States for decades to cover their heads when attending
          Sunday Church Service.

There is a wonderful picture essay of book, called Crowns, that reveals this
tradition and all its culture within the African American Sisterhood.

Maybe Latino and Italian and Cuban-American Christian Sisters are next.

         ?

Look 'Crowns' up on amazon or barnes and noble, to learn more about the book,

Anyway, it's quite encouraging to read that this tradition extends right here into our Madina.

hehehe how cute! and  :-) :-) :-) for good measure-
ummmm yeah,

Tesseract, to answer your question,
firstly I have no idea how many translations there are of the Bible, but in the different translations, they are almost exactly the same, just different phrasing of the words.

The verses you are quoting from the Bible tell women to cover their hair *during prayer*- which is why as you guys have rightly pointed out Nuns always cover their hair, because they live their lives in constant prayer.

It's not so much the Bible translation that dictates whether women wear scarves during prayer, but the Church denomination's tradition.
For instance, all of the Christian Orthodox women cover their hair during prayer, even the Greek, Russian etc Orthodox.
I think most if not all of the Middle Eastern Christian women also cover their hair as well, though I'm not 100% positive.

I was impressed to hear about the African American Christians as well! thanks Himy for that!

The Lord's Hand maiden-
I congratulate you on standing up for your beliefs. I've heard about how some women do wear scarves though it's rare even outside of Church, and I think it's wonderful. May God strengthen you always,
If you ever need a pick me up, walk past an Orthodox Church during Mass and see other Christian women (and even young girls as well) wearing their scarves  ;D

it's all about humbling yourself before God, and the Bible says that because a woman's 'crowning beauty' is her hair, she should cover it when she prays- she should forget herself and concentrate on God-
if you can do that on a regular basis, that's excellent!

I've always admired Muslimas who wear the hijab, and was sooo happy when I got to know one girl, who was as beautiful on the inside as she was on the outside, and MashAllah, always so elegant and graceful!
She showed everyone that you can still be as beautiful, elegant and intelligent (as she was all of these) while still being modest and following her religion's commandments.

May God strengthen all those who do His will!

Hi

This is so interesting. My question is that are you not curious to find out why muslim
women wear the hijab...that is so connected to your own tastes. May I also ask your views
about Islaam

thankyou

Praise the Lord!

I know that Muslim women cover for modesty sake.  The Bible also advises Christian women to dress modestly and not to take advantage of the grace that God has given us to do whatever we please.  I want to respect my God, my husband and my 4 sons.  I don't want to cause another to sin with lust in their eyes towards me.  It is my opinion, that so many women feel restricted if they cover themselves.  I believe that they don't feel confident in their inward beauty that they try to bank on their outer beauty.  I feel that hijaab is a statement.  I believe it says I care what God thinks and says about me.

I would rather not give my views about Islam; I don't want to offend anyone.  I enjoy the conversation in this city and I don't want to be put out.  I will say that there is one Truth, and God leads everyone to that Truth.  What you do with the Truth is up to you. :-)
