Anyone here see the continuation of The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers?

I saw it this week and over all I thought the movie was great..the battle scenes and Gollum's character were really well done..

But the thing that really disappointed me, other than the romance scenes and the hastiness of the Ents, was the portrayal of the Oliphaunt people, the Southerners, who are in the army of Sauron, as Arab like people..that was really unecessary, in my opinion, and it's sad to see these kind of negative stereotypes prevail.

I gave up on reading the book, (Too Many names to Remember). I never really liked books with too much magical scenes in them, made it all seem too unrealistic. :P

slm,

I really liked the two towers -- much better than the first. Remember in the [url=http://www.jannah.org/cgi-bin/madina/YaBB.pl?board=kabob;action=display;num=1032815475]old thread about the first one[/url] we talked about the no closure! This one had some at last!! I liked the continuing theme of materialism/industrialism versus nature/trees/being in peace with everything around us. Bro Zahid I was totally thinking BADR too!!! When they said the numbers I was like ?!  I don't remember any Arab like people??? I also liked the nobleness of the men, they really had character and did what they had to do --they had principles and they lived by them!!! Now the only problem is waiting ONE YEAR!!!! for the ending...

I haven't seen either LOTR movie, but I read the LOTR Trilogy about 10 years ago. The experience was somewhat spoiled by the realization that all the folks (and other creatures) fighting on the side of evil were dark skinned, while the good guys were all pale northern European types (hairy feet and other oddities not withstanding  ;). )

Tolkien described the oliphaunt people as dark skinned.  Perhaps he pictured them as "Arabic" types.  I had assumed he saw them as looking like folks from the Indian sub-continent.  Tolkien himself was raised in South Africa.  I'm sure this had much to do with his racial attitudes.

Why you gotta ruin it for us!  j/k :)

I don't think we can accuse him of being racist when the evil one's are wizards and like gross things born from the earth that aren't human and when there's some equally weird looking dwarves fighting with them...like is an elf white black or purple??!

Salam,

The elves, and other good people are always white..

I agree with pearl. Although I like the Lord of the Rings the one thing that bothered me and I had to reluctantly overlook while I was reading was this orientalist outlook..The Uruk Hai have Mongolian sounding names, some evil places have Arabic or Persian sounding names and as pearl mentioned most of the evil people are dark. The Southerners are described in the book as having dark faces (or being brown) , black eyes,  long black hair, some with plaited hair, and gold rings in their ears, some have red paint on their faces, and are a very fierce people.

In the movie the Southerners were brown and had kohl around their eyes and had veils covering the bottom half of their faces..they looked like bedouin Arab... (They were in that scene when Frodo, Sam and Gollum were at the gates of Mordor and had to hide when two of  Mordor soldiers (who look Arab to me) approached them and again  they are the same people who had the elephant like creature (Oliphaunt) and were fighting Faramir's men (the ones who captured Frodo, Sam and Gollum))While the book description upset me the movie portayal upset me even more because one can easily associate the movie version of the Southerners with Muslims.

I don't know maybe I'm being overly sensitive..

Anyway about the battle I too thought of the battle of Badr but Tolkien didn't plagiarize because the movie version is little bit different from the book..In the book  they had over a thousand fighters at Helms deep and the elves didn't come to the rescue in this battle.

I love the character of Legolas...sigh..Merry and Pippin are so cute..they're cuter in the book ..^_^

Salam,

Well I was curious to know if Tolkien really meant the Southerners to be Arab-like and decided to do some research on the net (I have a life when I'm not on the computer ^_^)..The proper name of the Southerners is Haradrim and it seems, from what I've found, that the Haradrim are supposed to be Arab-like.

One of the things I found was this interesting discussion (well interesting to me anyway ^_^):

Warning! The discussion contains a little bit of a spoiler of what's to come in the third movie..but nothing that isn't already obvious

Note: ME is Middle Earth not Middle East..^_^

http://pub108.ezboard.com/fthelotrmoviesitearwendebate.showMessage?topicID=88.topic

Anyway..I disagree with them and think that Jackson should be more sensitive to these concerns.  But that's just wishful thinking on my part..What's the big deal "it's a movie and above all fiction" as the br. Hanif has said..I don't know, these things bother me, especially when I know that children are watching this movie.

Sigh..Good fiction is so hard to come these days..We need more good Islamic fiction so that we don't have worry about these things..

assalamu alaikum

i am intrigued by the discussion on the hints of racism in Tolkien's works. i never read any of his books. i only came to know about them during my masters studies eons ago, where all the computers (unix machines) were named after characters from lord of the rings. initially i thought the names were weird, by the passing of time, the weirdness of my own studies made those names seem perfectly normal!!

about the discussion of haradrim being the people of harad.

look at the word "harad" carefully ... it is "h" + "arad" ...
now take the mirror image of the last letter in "arad" ...

too thinly veiled for my taste!  : \

also middle earth and middle east ... just a coincident?

anyways, i never was nterested in this kind of fiction, thus never saw any of the movies so far or read those novels.  now, with this new interpretation, i might be picking up the books from the public library sometime soon for a critical reading.

take care

Hi all,

I really liked the movie. Interesting discussion about Tolkein's intentions. I don't know the first thing about him as person, but as a professional writer I can say that alot of  times the things that a reader/viewer "sees" in the scripts or novels or movies aren't intended by the writer.  It's often difficult (though not impossible)to draw parallels between the real world and the fictionalized one without the story becoming unnatural and clunky. Besides, most writers just aren't that clever, myself included! :P

Just a thought.

Wa'alaikum Assalaam!

I loooooooved both parts of the movie!!

And I take it for just that a Movie..............

Its movies that to me have

a terrific storyline
Great acting
Terrific special effects
clean of sexuality (except for kissing)

It is so hard to find a movie with all these qualities!!
Sometimes its great special effect but terrible storyline etc...

Note: I felt so sorry for golem!!

Can't wait for the next!!

If that is the case then you shouldn't watch TV fullstop. Children watch cartoons, kids movies and other junk that comes on. Some of the cartoons endorse violence, if you really look into things then even Bob the Builder a kids TV programme, can be problematic as there was one episode where Bob had to decide who he was going to date between two women, one women had a short skirt and was blonde the other as far I know was a brunette and with a longer skirt. I'll let you think that one out. Its really up to the parents and guardian to supervise the kids viewing.

One scholar of old said regarding enjoining good and forbidding evil, that there are two aspects to it:
1) Commanding good and forbidding evil on oneself, and
2) Commanding good and forbidding evil amongst others,

and that these two aspects are mutually exclusive. Thus, if there are a group of Muslims sitting in a circle all drinking alcohol, it is mandatory upon each of them to forbid the others to drink alcohol.

What am i trying to say? Yes, i've seen the movie too, but that doesn't mean that i will review the movie and indirectly encourage others to watch it too.

LOTR is bankrolled by New Line Cinema, who are owned by AOL/Time Warner... and we know who owns them, and where their money goes and how they use their influence to portray Muslims.

If a person must watch such a movie, then at least s/he should keep it to oneself and not encourage others to go and watch it.

Whats worse is the tafsir-like reviews that are being written...

The thrust of my thread was this:

[color=black][LOTR is bankrolled by New Line Cinema, who are owned by AOL/Time Warner... and we know who owns them, and where their money goes and how they use their influence to portray Muslims.][/color]

AOL/Time Warner own Warner Bros too.

Warner Brothers are the same company that made the notorious film 'Executive Decision.' If that doesn't ring a bell, let me jog your memory:

"According to CAIR, people who have seen a rough cut of the film [Executive Decision] said the negative portrayals of Muslims and Islam include the following:

- A Muslim in a flashback committing an act of terrorism with what appears to be a Quran (Koran), Islam's revealed text, in one hand and a bomb in the other.
- References to verses from the Quran in discussions of why violence is used.
- A display of a ring worn by a terrorist with the word Allah, or God, on it.
- A depiction of a terrorist performing Islamic prayers.
- The reversal of reality in which Chechens, who are victims of violence, are depicted as the aggressors.
- Chants of "Allahu Akbar," or "God is Most Great," an Islamic phrase often used in stereotypical portrayals of Muslims."

A person might be OK with sending money to a company producing films such as Executive Decision... but (indirectly) encouraging others to do the same is a step in the wrong direction.

The irony is that it is us who give companies like AOLTW our money (and in this thread, we're kind of condoning that), and then we get upset when they make movies depicting Muslims as terrorists - and we knew that was going to happen in the first place anyway. Is that insanity or what?

PS AOL-TW also own that great Muslim-loving news network, CNN.

Hmm Kashif what would you like us to do? Boycott everything Time Warner owns?? That would be quite a feat... I don't think boycotts work unless they're well publicized and targetted.

At a glance here I would have to not shop on amazon anymore, not use IM, not look up driving directions on the web, not listen to lectures on mp3, uninstall my netscape, cut up my credit card, and best of all disconnect my cable internet.  Not all impossible, I'm sure we could find some alternatives though it gets pretty messy in todays megaconglomerate days... Perhaps it would be better if when such a film is coming out, a Muslim organization threaten the film company with a boycott and if they don't cut out certain frames/fix up their film, call for a worldwide boycott of all their films. That might work...but a general don't go to movies and don't talk about them cause they're bad and they made bad films before is emotional reaction. Instead, we should be strategizing.

Never tell a sister she's being emotional. That's a tip for when you get married.

All I am saying is if you think someone is doing something wrong, post your fatwa or evidence to explain why it's wrong. But don't say because I think it's haram and don't do it (or do it in this case) you all should not even discuss it here, yet it is discussed among friends?

Since I posted the (as someone called it) "tafsir" of the movie, I think it calls for an explanation on my part.

No doubt the movie is a "fantasy", so are all "sci-fi" movies. What I was trying to get at was whether, at a conscious or subliminal level, Tolkein had any "inspiration" from the Islamic/Arab events. Bear in mind that Tolkein was not your average English author. He studied/taught at Oxford, was a General in the "Great War" (wherein Britain captured Jerusalem). So it is not entirely unimaginable that he might actually have heard about great Islamic battles (of which Battle of Badr was one.)

It seems that my original post failed to make its point so I'll see if I can remove it.

Question:

Is it OK to read books on Science fiction where a mad scientist creates a human being or a hybrid between a human and an animal?

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

If these stories include lies, such as Darwin’s theory (evolution), and other things that are contrary to the facts stated by Islam and the facts of natural science, then the Muslim should avoid them, and keep himself busy with something that will be of use to him, such as learning good things or doing righteous deeds or reading true stories and historical accounts and so on. Many of the movies and novels that are known as “Science Fiction” include a lot of kufr, such as putting life and death in the hands of some created being, giving creatures the ability to create from nothing, saying that scientists in laboratories can create from nothing, making inanimate things come alive, creating life from a fossil that has been dead for many millenia, or travelling to the future then coming back to the present. All of this is impossible, and no one knows the unseen except for Allaah. Some of these novels and movies also include clear conpradictions of historical facts that are mentioned in the Qur’aan and Sunnah, such as man’s creation and his life on earth. When the Muslim indulges in reading these books or watching these movies, it shakes his belief or at the very least wastes his time and keeps him busy with something that is of no benefit to him. Some people claim that this is just entertainment and a way of passing time, but entertainment is not permitted if it is haraam, and the Muslim’s time is too precious to be wasted on such trivial things. The Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “One of the signs of a person being properly committed to Islam is that he leaves alone that which does not concern him.” (Reported by al-Tirmidhi, 2239, and others. Also in Saheeh al-Jaami’, 5911). And Allaah knows best.

As salaamu Aliakum wa Rahmatullah wa Barkatuh,

I think the issue is really do we want to increase our emaan or do we want to stay the same for the rest of our lives.  No doubt, no true scholar will say that movies are something liked to Allah.  And if you think that you would be fooling yourself.

This is a question that people should truly ask themselves, are they living their lives to please Allaah? Or are they living their lives to please their desires.

Indeed movies have many bad elements.  All of us know at a movie theater what haram goes on there, what kind of people go there.

Its very sad that we have to remind each other that we shouldnt involve ourselves in these frivilous acts.  I know people will say "oh your extreme" or whatnot.

But really noone is promised life, everyone shall die, would you like it that your last moments be that you are watching a movie, which in it has things that do not please Allah subhanahu wa ta'alaa.  Do not fool yourselves, shaytan he tricks people with these kind of things.  If we were to sit and just go through this movie and analyze why the movie is haram we could come up with lists.

Allah knows best, i agree with brother Kashif.  I think if you are a weak person and you fall into watching these movies, repent, follow it with a good deed.  People complain that they want to travel overseas to learn arabic or islam.  Sisters and Brothers, Islam is so readily available in North America.  But its very sad that we dont use our time in memorizing Qur'an, and remembering Allah.

And What happens when you dont remember Allah?
.
.
.
.
.
Then Allah will not remember you.... May Allah guide us to be of the righteous and correct ourselves, and be humble when we are given words of wisdom to help our eman.
Ameen

wa salaams

This message is for Sister Adilah.

"...its just a movie people!!! its not based on reality its called FANTASY get with it!."

Its just a movie???

Please sister, its not just a movie, every action you do will be accounted for.  Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala says, "La yughadiru sagheeratan, wa la kabeeratan illa ahsaha"  in a bried interpretation of that ayah, That this book that will be given to you, not a small thing or a big thing will be neglected from your acts.

Will this be a proper excuse "It's just a movie" when Allah subhanahu wa ta'ala asks you how you used your time?  Or better yet that you watched these fantasy things that in the movie went against what Allah commanded?

Our life is quite different from the kuffar, we are here in this world to work for a true Fantasy Land, a Dream Land, a WonderLand, and that is Jannah, a Jannah which our eyes can never imagine.

I mean really, i think if everyone really truly opens their minds and think, shaytan is not going to get a good muslim with fornication, or with drinking alcohol, but shaytan plots and gets muslims with things they think are not haram, but your eyes will account for what you saw.

Even a woman not dressed properly is haram for another woman to see, then how can a man watch a woman willingly who is not adhering to proper hijab.  I know we work with nonmuslim women and men and we have to deal with that without being able to get out of it.  But why should we put ourself in a situation which is not forced on us.  A situation which is not pleasing to Allah?

People are dying all around the world, and we shed a few tears here and there, and what do we do in free America to help us increase our eman.  My sister in kosova told me that she could not wear hijab because they would know she is Muslim.  She had to live in fear, she was unable to practice her religion.  And in a country like America, we have all the freedom to do what we want, but that freedom we dont use it to learn islam, we use it to watch movies, to have fun.

I leave you with this reminder from a Shaykh, "Fun is not in this world for the Muslims, Fun is in the hearafter, we need to work hard, so that we can reach our abode.  Let it be that our abode is Jannah and not Jahannam."

Another point, InshaAllah i'll try to make it my last point, is how keen we are in remembering Allah.  We use couple of words here and there, inshaAllah, Mashallah, etc.. and we use beautiful verses and expression to go with our names and the bottom of our screens.

My point is how can we belittle Allah, and be-large other people that have no significance.  People who if not guided will be in the pits of hellfire.  Even Abu Lahab and Abu Jahl and all those who hated Islam their stories were mentioned in the Qur'an not to praise them, but to disgrace them, and to show the severity of what they did and their punishment.

We see many posts on this movie and other ones like Lord of the Rings, the name itself should put someone off, it should be in ones nature (fitrah) to hear such a comment that signifies shirk.

Allah knows best.  May Allah truly guide us all, the ummah today is in great loss, because we are studying movies and not opening up the qur'an or books of hadeeth to read the real heros of this world, like Abu Bakr (radiyAllaahu anhu), like Aisha (radiyaAllahu anhu).  May Allah grant us true guidance and allow us to use our time to analyze true figures that pleased Allah and were promised Jannah.

The Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) said, "You will be with the one you loved (on the day of judgment)"

Question:

Assalamalaikum wrt wbt,
Is it halaal for a Muslim to watch a film such as Hercules which is based on Shirk stories/ideas?
I eagerly await your response insha'Allah.
Jazzakallahkhairum

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

It is not permissible to watch these kinds of movies which tell stories of shirk. Seeing and hearing them can cause serious damage to the heart of the Muslim. The Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) got angry with ‘Umar ibn al-Khattaab (may Allaah be pleased with him) when he saw him with a piece of the Tawraat (Torah) in his hand, and told him to destroy it. Many of the Muslims do not have sufficient protection or the level of knowledge required to recognize the corrupt ideas in these movies, so some viewers may develop doubts that damage their eemaan and shake their belief; they may start to believe some of the false ideas and their hearts may be filled with evil poisons as a result of watching these movies. This is in addition to the haraam content in many of these movies, such as pictures of women, music and so on. We may also note the recent appearance of movies based on distorted Biblical beliefs or the false prophecies of liars and charlatans. These movies have become very popular in the West because of the spiritual vacuum resulting from the lack of true religion. Due to the environment surrounding the Muslims in western countries, some of them have started to follow these movies. Muslims should fear their Lord and avoid watching these films of kufr. Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “… Verily! The hearing, and the sight, of each of those you will be questioned by Allaah.” [al-Isra’ 17:36]

If Muslims want to entertain themselves, let them do so in permissible ways. And Allaah is the guide to the Straight Path.

Well, I went the other night, at the spur of the moment, with my sister Stephanie.
We got a huge box of popcorn and two huge bebzis and enjoyed ourselves completely. We cheered, yelled, clapped and when Legolas (sigh) slid down the battlements on a shield, well, we both made way too much noise.   ;D
I read the books when I was much younger (that's back in the seventies folks) and thought that the production team did them justice from the set design to the computer work. Sheer fantasy for the fun of it. I do agree with Jannah, I do like the portrayal of the character of the men (and women). Do what you have to do, when you have to do it! Can't wait for the last installment!

Surah Al-A'raf
Surah 7, Section 12, Verses 94 - 99

94. Whenever We sent a prophet to a town We took up its people in suffering and adversity in order that they might learn humility.

95. Then We changed their suffering into prosperity until they grew and multiplied and began to say: "Our fathers (too) were touched by suffering and affluence."...Behold! We called them to account of a sudden while they realized not (their peril).

96. If the people of the towns had but believed and feared Allah We should indeed have opened out to them (all kinds of) blessings from heaven and earth; but they rejected (the truth) and We brought them to book for their misdeeds.

97. Did the people of the towns feel secure against the coming of our wrath by night while they were asleep?

98. Or else did they feel secure against its coming in broad daylight while they played about (care-free)?

99. Did they then fell secure against the plan of Allah? But no one can feel secure from the plan of Allah except those (doomed) to ruin!

In reply to Sister Jannah's statement:

"I don't like being a hypocrite, if you've seen it you've seen it"

------------------------------

Question:

I heard from our Friday khutbah that a person will not be forgiven if he has bragged and boasted to his friends about his sin while Allah had hidden it, and he quoted a hadeeth to support his claim. Is this true ? I thought Allah forgives all sins! I am really in despair now.

Answer:

Praise be to Allaah.

With regard to the idea that Allaah forgives all sins: this is correct, because Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“Say: “O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allaah, verily, Allaah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” [al-Zumar 39:53].

Minor sins (saghaa’ir) are expiated for by doing acts of worship and by avoiding major sins (kabaa’ir), because of the following evidence (daleel):

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning):

“If you avoid the great sins which you are forbidden to do, We shall expiate from you your (small) sins, and admit you to a Noble Entrance (i.e. Paradise)” [al-Nisaa’ 4:31]

It was reported from Ibn Mas’ood that a man kissed a woman, then he came to the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) and told him about it. Then Allaah revealed the words (interpretation of the meaning): “And perform As-Salaah (Iqaamat-as- Salaah), at the two ends of the day and in some hours of the night [i.e. the five compulsory Salaah (prayers)]. Verily, the good deeds remove the evil deeds (i.e. small sins).” [Hood 11:114]. The man said, O Messenger of Allaah, is this just for me? He said, “It is for all of my Ummah.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 503; Muslim, 2763)

It was reported from Abu Hurayrah that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “The five prayers and Jumu’ah are an expiation from one week to the next, so long as you do not commit major sins.” (Narrated by Muslim, 233).

There are many things that expiate for minor sins, such as fasting, qiyaam, wudoo’, etc. But major sins require specific acts of expiation, such as sincere repentance, the carrying out of the Islamic punishment (hadd) on the one who committed them, etc., as can be seen in the following texts:

It was reported from ‘Ubaadah ibn al-Saamit (may Allaah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said, when there was a group of his Sahaabah around him: “Give allegiance to me that you will not associate anything in worship with Allaah, not steal, not commit fornication, not kill your children… and not disobey me in what is right. Whoever among you fulfils this, his reward will be with Allaah. Whoever commits any of these sins will be punished in this world and that will be an expiation for him. Whoever commits any of these sins but Allaah conceals it, then it will be for Allaah to decide: if He wills, He will forgive him, and if He wills, He will punish him.” So we gave allegiance to him on that basis.

The phrase “he will be punished in this world” means, the Islamically-prescribed punishment (hadd) will be carried out on him.

It was reported from Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri (may Allaah be pleasd with him) that the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Among the Children of Israel there was a man who killed ninety-nine people. Then he went out and came to a monk and asked him, ‘Can I repent?’ He said, ‘No,’ so he killed him. Then he started asking, and a man said to him, ‘Go to such and such a town.’ But death caught up with him, so he inclined his chest towards (that town, as he was dying). The angels of mercy and the angels of punishment disputed concerning him. Allaah inspired (the good town) to come closer to him, and (the evil town) to move away from him, then He said, Measure the distance between them. They found that he was closer to (the good town) by a hand-span, so he was forgiven.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 3283; Muslim, 2766).

But if a sinner dies in a state of sin, if his sins include shirk, then Allaah will not forgive him in the Hereafter. If his sins are less than that, then the person is subject to the will of Allaah – if He wills, He will punish him and if He wills, He will forgive him.

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Verily, Allaah forgives not that partners should be set up with Him (in worship), but He forgives except that (anything else) to whom He wills” [al-Nisaa’ 4:48, 116].

It was reported that Ibn ‘Umar said: I heard the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “The believer will be brought close to his Lord until He conceals him and makes him confess his sin. Allaah will say, ‘Do you remember such and such a sin?’ The man will say, ‘Yes, I admit it.’ The Lord will say, ‘I concealed it for you in the world and I forgive you for it today.’ Then He will close up his record of good deeds. As for the others or the Kuffaar, it will be called out before the witnesses, ‘These are the ones who disbelieved in their Lord. The curse of Allaah is upon the wrongdoers.’” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 4408; Muslim, 2768).

Your despairing of the mercy of Allaah is not permissible, because of the following evidence (daleel):

Allaah says (interpretation of the meaning): “Say: “O ‘Ibaadi (My slaves) who have transgressed against themselves (by committing evil deeds and sins)! Despair not of the Mercy of Allaah, verily, Allaah forgives all sins. Truly, He is Oft-Forgiving, Most Merciful” [al-Zumar 39:53]. And He says (interpretation of the meaning): “… and My Mercy embraces all things…” [al-A’raaf 7:156]

It was reported from Abu Moosa that the Prophet  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) said: “Allaah spreads out His hand at night to accept the repentance of those who committed sins during the day, and He spreads out His hand during the day to accept the repentance of those who committed sins during the night. (He will continue to do this) until the sun rises from the West.” (Narrated by Muslim, 2759).

Speaking about your sin and flaunting it openly in front of your friends is haraam, and is a major sin. It is one of the ways of spreading immorality among the Muslims, encouraging evil and tempting others to do similar things. It also means that one does not take sin seriously and regards it as insignificant, and that the sinner is damaging his own reputation and exposing his honour to the slander of others. Islam seeks to put people off from doing such things in the strongest possible terms, as in the following hadeeth:

Abu Hurayrah said: I heard the Messenger of Allaah  (peace and blessings of Allaah be upon him) say: “All of my ummah will be forgiven except those who sin openly. It is a part of sinning openly when a man does something at night, then the following morning when Allaah has concealed his sin, he says, ‘O So and so, I did such and such last night,’ when all night his Lord has concealed him and the next morning he uncovers what Allaah had concealed.” (Narrated by al-Bukhaari, 5721; Muslim, 2990).

Shaykh Ibn ‘Uthaymeen (may Allaah preserve him) said: there is a third kind of immoral, rebellious, promiscuous person, who speaks in a boastful manner about zinaa (fornication, adultery) – we seek refuge with Allaah – and tells people that he travelled to such and such a country and committed immoral acts of zinaa with a number of women, and so on, and he shows off about that. Such people should be asked to repent, and if they do not they should be executed, because when a person boasts about zinaa, this implies that he thinks it is permissible – Allaah forbid – and the one who thinks that zinaa is halaal is a kaafir. (Sharh Riyaad al-Saaliheen, 1/116).

[saw] [saw] [saw] [saw] [saw]

On this basis:

We advise you to repent sincerely, and if you are tested with any kind of sin, do not speak openly of it or brag about it. You should be aware of the greatness of the One against Whom you are sinning, seek forgiveness for your sin, weep for the error of your ways and adhere strictly to the path of Allaah. Beware of despairing of the mercy of Allaah. If you adhere properly to the religion of Allaah, you will have glad tidings of goodness in this world and in the Hereafter. We ask Allaah to help us and you to do that which He loves and is pleased with. May Allaah bless our Prophet Muhammad.

I think this discussion has run its course, and that the people are in two camps, and that there won't be much reconciling between the two. Better to just stick to your opinion, get on with your life and your da'wah and your worship of Allah. No one is held responsible for anyone else's deeds (unless he encouraged another to do good or bad).

===============
Before the Boat Drowns
By Muhammad Alshareef
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Ashaab As-Sabt - the people of Saturday. They were a townsfolk from Bani Israa’eel who were tested with the Sabbath, the day when they were to leave their worldly affairs and devout to Allah. All week long they would go fishing, with scant return. But on Saturdays, when they were required to put aside their activities, the fish would come in abundance. A test from Allah!

[And ask them (O Muhammad (peace be upon him)) about the town that was by the sea; when they transgressed in the matter of the Sabbath (i.e. Saturday): when their fish came to them openly on the Sabbath day, and did not come to them on the day they had no Sabbath. Thus We made a trial of them for they used to rebel against Allah's Command (disobey Allah)]
Surah An-Nisa 4/154
A group of the townsfolk transgressed, not satisfied with Allah’s commandments devising a scheme to by-pass the commandment. They would put out their fishing nets on Friday, and then on Sunday they would come and pick the nets up. Now all the Saturday fish would be caught.

The townsfolk divided into 2 groups when they saw the grave evil and sin that was befalling. One of them tried to advise the transgressors and warn them of the horrific consequences of their action - commanding the good and forbidding the evil.

Thinking they had no responsibility for what was taking place, the other group just went about minding their own business, holding that Allah would eventually destroy the sinners.

[And when a community among them said: "Why do you preach to a people whom Allâh is about to destroy or to punish with a severe torment?" ]

Listen carefully to the reply of those callers to the obedience of Allah.
[(The preachers) said: "In order to be free from guilt before your Lord (Allâh), and perhaps they may fear Allâh."] 4/155
For 2 reasons: One - that we would be pardoned before Allah because we tried to hold back their hands. And two - that perhaps they may hear the reminder and turn back to Allah. It was only this group that survived.

[So when they forgot the reminders that had been given to them, We rescued those who forbade evil, but We seized those who did wrong with a severe torment because they used to rebel against Allah's Command (disobey Allâh).

So when they exceeded the limits of what they were prohibited, We said to them: "Be you monkeys, despised and rejected."] 4/156-157

In one sweeping night, the punishment rained down and they were transfigured into pigs and monkeys.

Dear brothers and sisters, it is the nature of a human being to feel the need to do good or feel the drive to indulge in evil. Even if he or she were to be alone, deserted and secluded, they would still feel a drive to do good or indulge in evil.

From here, it is a characteristic of this Ummah to not only do good ourselves, but we MUST encourage others to do good, we must be the driving force. And we not only distance ourselves from vice, but we MUST forbid others from doing it also, we must be the obstacle.

That shall be our discussion for today: Al amr bil Ma’roof wan Nahi ‘an al Munkar.

Dear brothers and sisters,

If we all had Muslim identification badges, there would have to be a description of the owner. If it is a valid card, under the description it should read: This man/women commands the good and forbids evil; for this is how Allah described us.

[You (true believers in Islâmic Monotheism, and real followers of Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his Sunnah) are the best of peoples ever raised up for mankind; you enjoin Al-Ma'rűf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm has ordained) and forbid Al-Munkar (polytheism, disbelief and all that Islâm has forbidden), and you believe in Allâh.] Surah Al-e-Imran 3/104

Good and Bad. When it comes to encouraging one or the other, there are two groups of people. The first are those that encourage others to do good and advise them to stop the evil they may be committing. These are the Mu’minoon and Mu’minaat, the believing men and women, the ones that shall be favored by Allah’s Mercy:

[The believers, men and women, are Auliyâ' (helpers, supporters, friends, protectors) of one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Ma'rűf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do), and forbid (people) from Al-Munkar (i.e. polytheism and disbelief of all kinds, and all that Islâm has forbidden); they perform As-Salât (Iqâmat-as-Salât) and give the Zakât, and obey Allâh and His Messenger. Allâh will have His Mercy on them. Surely Allâh is All-Mighty, All-Wise.]
Surah At-Tawbah 9/71

The second camp of people are those that encourage others towards evil and stop them whenever they see them doing acts of virtue. These are the Munaafiqoon and Munaafiqaat, those that Allah shall shun.

[The hypocrites, men and women, are from one another; they enjoin (on the people) Al-Munkar (i.e. disbelief and polytheism of all kinds and all that Islâm has forbidden), and forbid (people) from Al-Ma'rűf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do), and they close their hands (from giving (spending in Allâh's Cause) alms.). They have forgotten Allâh, so He has forgotten them. Verily, the hypocrites are the Fâsiqűn (rebellious, disobedient to Allâh).] Surah At-Tawbah 9/76

The Qur’an tells us that the winners, those that attain success, are those Muslim men and women that command the good and forbid the evil:

And Allah teaches us that He cursed nations before us because they lost this characteristic of encouraging good and forbidding evil:

[Those among the Children of Israel who disbelieved were cursed by the tongue of Dâwűd (David) and 'Isâ (Jesus), son of Maryam (Mary). That was because they disobeyed (Allâh and the Messengers) and were ever transgressing beyond bound.

They used not to forbid one another from Al-Munkar (wrong, evil-doing, sins, polytheism, disbelief) which they committed. Vile indeed was what they used to do.]
Surah Maa’idah 5/78 -79
When a nation fails in their duty to command the good and forbid the evil, their invocations will cease to be accepted.

Rasul Allah - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - said, “(I swear) by He who holds my soul in His Hands, you shall indeed command the good, and you shall indeed forbid the evil, otherwise Allah shall rain down upon you a punishment, then you shall attempt to invoke Him and your (invocations) shall be unanswered.” [An authentic hadith narrated by Ahmad and At-tirmidhi]

Our Qudwah - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - lived his entire life commanding the good and forbidding evil. When he first arrived in Madinah, the very first thing he said to the Ansar and Muhaajireen as they gathered to see his noble face - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - was as ..

Abdullaah ibn Salam narrates: When Rasul Allah - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - came to Madinah, the people raced to greet him. I went in the crowd to see him and when I saw his face I knew that that face was not the face of a liar. The first thing he said when he spoke was, “O people, spread salam, feed the hungry, and pray at night when others are sleeping - you’ll enter Jannah in peace.” [An authentic hadith narrated by Ibn Majah]

Our Qudwah - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - would command the good and forbid the evil in all categories of the community. We see him with the young Muslims advising them, as in the following hadith:

Umar ibn Abu Salamah said: I was a young boy under the care of Allah’s Messenger - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - when my hand was jumping here and there in the (food) plate. Allah’s Messenger - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - said to me, “O young boy, say Bismillah (first), eat with right hand, and eat from what is in front of you.” Ibn Abu Salamah said: After that I always ate in that manner (which I was taught). [Bukhari and Muslim]

And our Qudwah - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - would encourage good amongst the Muslim women.

As Zaynab, the wife of Abdullaah ibn Mas’ood said: Allah’s Messenger addressed us, “O women! Give charity if even with your jewelry.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Even if it came to his own wives, our Qudwah - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - would forbid.

Aisha - radi Allahu ‘anha - herself narrates that she once said to him - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam, “Watch out for Safiyyah!” Meaning that she was short. So Allah’s Messenger - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - said, “You said a word that if it were to be mixed with (all) the water of the sea it would overcome (the water).” [Narrated by Abu Dawood]

Aisha said that after that that she would never have loved to mention someone (in a manner that they would dislike) no matter what anyone would give her.

This is what the Deen is all about - encouraging the good and forbidding evil. This is what the early Muslims pledged allegiance to:

Ubaadah ibn As-Saamit - radi Allahu ‘anhu - said, “We pledged allegiance to Allah’s Messenger - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - to listen and obey in what we like or dislike, and that we do not fight the people of authority, and that we would stand for the truth wherever we may be, fearing not - for the sake of Allah - any criticism of those who would criticize.” [Bukhari and Muslim]

Part II
The scholar Kirz Al-Haarithee - rahimahullaah - used to go out unto the doers of evil and warn them of the sin they were doing. They would fall upon him with their fists until he would fall unconscious in a pool of blood. But he would never pass them without advising them. [From Siyar Al ‘Alaam by Imam Adh Dhahabee]
I remember once in Islamic school when a young boy came up and told me what he was going to get for his birthday. I was kind of surprised, since birthdays is not something we find in our complete way of life in Islam, something we should not participate in. The classmates knew the ruling on birthdays so they started chanting loudly, “No more birthdays! No more birthdays!”

I was very pleased at the class reaction and it brought back memories of myself growing up in a non-Muslim school. In that non-Muslim school there was no one to forbid the evil, rather it was the evil that everyone - including the teacher - was encouraging. If you didn’t have a birthday you were the dork in the class. And if you didn’t get invited to this student’s party or that one, you weren’t one of the ‘cool’ kids.

May Allah ta’ala show His mercy to those parents who are saving their young Muslim boys and girls from such an environment.

Allah’s Messenger - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - gave us a parable that we should never forget in this issue of commanding the good and forbidding the evil.

As An-Nu’maan ibn Basheer - radi Allahu ‘anhu - narrates: The Prophet - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - said, “The similitude of the one who is steadfast on the borders of Allah and the one who has fallen over it is that of a people that come upon a boat. Some of them go to the top and the others go to the bottom. Those on the bottom - in order for them to drink - had to disturb those on top. So they said to themselves, let us make a hole in the bottom of the boat in this portion of ours, so as not to disturb those above.” The Prophet - sal Allahu alayhi wa sallam - continued, “If they leave them to what they want to do, they will all perish. And if they hold their hands they’ll save the people on the bottom, and all of them will be saved.”
[Bukhari]

When someone encourages good and forbids evil they should have certain characteristics:
One: Knowledge

Two: Patience, as Luqman taught his son.

Three: They should be just, not forgetting the good that that person still has.

Four: Hikmah/having wisdom

Five: Kindness to those whom they are advising.

The point of commanding good and forbidding evil is not to release some anger in our hearts or to revenge an insult to us. In the end we want the person to receive guidance, something which may require us to swallow our personal pride sometimes. Other times - when the situation calls for it - we may have to hurt someone’s feelings if that is the only way they can be guided. But it is only the person of ‘Ilm (knowledge) and Hikmah (wisdom) that can properly measure the situation.

Hurting the feelings of the lay Muslim is not a first resort, nor is public humiliation of someone who came to the Masjid for the first time. These are methods of those who have not schooled themselves well in the characteristics of those that call to Allah.

In conclusion, there are many ways that one can encourage good and forbid evil, try some of the following:
- With an encouraging speech/lecture

- With a booklet highlighting what needs to be encouraged or a general email

- With an Islamic tape given as a gift

- With an Islamic Magazine or newspaper

- With an email or letter addressed specifically to that person who needs to be encouraged or needs advice in abstaining from sin.

And the list goes on.

You want to be successful, right? Well, here is the way:

[Let there arise out of you a group of people inviting to all that is good (Islâm), enjoining Al-Ma'rűf (i.e. Islâmic Monotheism and all that Islâm orders one to do) and forbidding Al-Munkar (polytheism and disbelief and all that Islâm has forbidden). And it is they who are the successful.]
Surah Al-e-Imran 3/104

Let’s begin today practicing this encouragement of good and forbiddance of evil with that Muslim in the mirror.

For Brother Kashif,

I understand your point of why you chose to move on and ask others to move on, but we learn from the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that he did not just tell the people, do not commit shirk couple of times when he first became a Prophet, he wanted the people to be on the true path (peace be upon him), that was part of the Dawah that he loved the people that he wanted them to be on the proper path.

These are my brothers and sisters, even though some of them may dislike what i am saying, i am just praying that inshaAllah, one day something may click in their hearts, maybe some light that was mentioned from the Qur'an and Sunnah will enter their hearts.

I think it is time for us muslims to really wake up, if i am pushing it too far, then maybe that push is needed, and maybe that will show the people on this forum the graveness of how people are spending their times in the displeasure of Allah.

One of the scholars of the past mentioned, that people they may not commit major sins and hope for the mercy of Allah.  But he mentioned that sometimes its those little sins, that accumulate and cause a person to be in the hellfire.

A sin here, sin there, this movie, that movie, i mean if you see how much haram there is in one movie, the going, the intention to go watch, being present amongst kuffar boyfriends and girlfriends that may be doing things that deserve the wrath of Allah.

Listening to Music from a movie.  I do not know the plot of this particular movie, but we know Movie makers always have the theme of "love" in it, even in cartoons, what does one do when the bad scenes come on, even if they try to look away in a theater, they have already been speared by shaytan that split memory is in their mind of what they saw before they turned their head... we can go on and on about ill effects of this subject.

InshaAllah, Allah is my protector, and i seek help with him in helping my muslim brothers and sisters to be on the right path.

I do want jannah for myself and for my brothers, and this is jannah.org right, lets use our time in trying to get there.
