btw that blue one is NICE (if u got 65 bucks that is)

Waliakum asalam,

I saw almost the same *blue* abaya at icna and it was $60 on the first day and the last day it came down to $45  ::)  But masha'Allah that combo and style in diff colors n shades  is *In* :)  I saw a sister wearing it and masha'Allah i liked it, i am wating for Isna :) for my abaya n jilbab shopping..

hmm for mehndis/ weddings , i think i have lately seen a lot of sisters wearing nice multi layerd lengahi's.. Also, the subsititution of  nice n loose pants instead of shalwars, I have noticed like slits in the pants as well..  and usually with short shirts.. But some of my friends have been wearing long shirts ( kameez's) with nice black pants and it looks cute :)
But for more of a formal event, lengha would look nice or a nice shalwar kameez.. Also, i am assuming the mehndi is for sisters only :)

P.S the black cardigan/duster is really cute... finding a nice duster is soooo hard, I saw some awesome dusters at j-crew (on sale ofcourse) and they were all in weird colors...

**waiting for other styling experts posts**  []

Oh yEah!
It's definitely timefor another clothing thread for this season's latest?

Check these really fly hijabs at www.capsters.com
or this double jacket jilbab at alhediya.com:http://www.alhediya.com
/doubjacjil.html

About the fashion, wish I knew myself as I will Inshallah be attending
the MSA West Conference, all i know is them long dusters have come into favour recently ;D that's how old I am.

The new tekbirhttp://www.tekbirgiyim.com.tr/ site looks pretty fashionable though.

Salaam 'Alaikum

Some of the stuff at Muhajabat comes from Shukr (like that black cardigan outfit)... They have their own site now

www.shukronline.com

Shukr is awesome... and while the women's line was only recently intro'd, don't worry! They're working on new designs.  (And seeing as how I know them, I recommend them b/c they use high quality fabric, do high quality work, care about the product, are prompt with deliveries, etc.)

I saw a few similar dresses (abayas) while in Saudi, and they're really pretty (and about half that price).  However, they do show thru in the sun and that's why I didn't get them.  If my memory serves me well they also have the same kind of cloth but with the velcro on shoulders to close them.
So if you know someone going on hajj soon you could help them out with their gift list by giving them ideas....  ;)

Ooooh I got me one of those 'berkley' cardis! How come its called 'berkely'??? I especially like the duffel coat like toggles  ;D

for a mehndi or wedding i would suggest either a trouser suit: short kameez up to knees with embroidery/dhabka work, and matching trousers with sum nifty heels OR shararas are still good?

try this:

p.s u might want to try typing in www.raishma.com rather than just clicking here, cos for sum reason it takes ages loading this way...

Whats really in? Over here really it seems anything goes ;)
But from what i've heard and seen, back home, short kameez with not even a salwar but a slim straight cut pant with small slits at the sides. Not as modest as the original salwar kameez, but depending on the cut and how long the kameez is, it can still look pretty:-) Another trend i've noticed is wearing long kameez with lenghas instead of the usual shortened kameez, it looks really elegant.

Here's a few websites you might want to look at, Enjoy! :)

Re: fashion
Aurora

Fatimah,  I hope this helps  :)

Shalwar: A trouser with a diagonal piece of fabric( godet) sewn at the inseam all along the length of the main panel to add graceful flare. The top of the shalwar has a gathered yoke belt area which resembles a cumber band. This belt is stitched to the main body of the shalwar with gathers. The belt may have a drawstring, elastic, or may be stitched with a flat front and an elastic gathered back. The cuffs of the shalwar are stitched with buckram and may be plain or accented with embroidery, crochet or ladder lace. This cuff are is known as the paincha and may range from 5 inches to 11 inches depending on the fashion season. The shalwar is worn at the waistline or the belly button level.

Kameez: Also known as the shirt, the jumper or the tunic. Structurally it is a long top that comes to the knee or mid calf level at both front and back. It may have full or half sleeves or may be sleeveless. The side seams of the shirt open up below the belly button area giving a fly away and ease of movement. This side slit on either side is known as the chaak and may range from 2inches to 14 inches depending on the fashion season.

Dupatta: A veil or stole also known as chunni, orhni, chaddar, chaddor, chunna Dupatta, any where from 2 yards to 7 yards in length. it may be 1/3 to 1 full yard in width. It may be straight or crinkled in a broom stick manner ( chunna Dupatta). It may be simple with a pekoe finish, may be stylized with inserts of fabric, lace or may be very ornate depending on the outfit it accompanies.

Kurta: A shirt that has bias cut panels on each side at the front and back. These panels( godet) are stitched to the main body of the shirt and add extra body and the style of the shirt becomes A-Lined. The panels may be added in the structural design of princess style line from the shoulder or arm hole, or from below the arms, attached to a small diamond shaped fabric. The kurta is generally below the knee in length and may be worn with a shalwar, a pajama, a churridar or a laacha. The kurta may or may not have side slits.

Pajama: Straight cut pants with ease at the hip and thigh area, straight through the calves and with narrow  or straight width cuffs. Also know as Aligarh cut pajama.

Churridar/tung/arra Pajama: Also known as chooridar & tang pajama is cut totally on bias out of a formation that looks like a sack. The fabric is folded diagonally and stitched till it is closed at all ends and looks like a sack. The draft of the pajama is then cut out on that bias and stitched. The pajama may or may not have a belt like in the shalwar. The hip area of the pajama is wide and gracious, the thigh area is not fitted but follows the body curves, the knee and calf area are extremely fitted, and that is why the bias cut of the fabric is essential. The lower calf area up to the ankle is gathered and wrinkled in a beautiful manner (6-10 inches) resembling bangles, thus the name churridar (bangles are known as churi in Hindi and Urdu).

Laacha: The Pakistani version of the sarong. The Laacha wraps around twice and the open end has prestitched pleats that fall from the center to the left side of the body (like a sari). The modern Laacha has a belt that allows the wrap to be hooked in for safety! Laacha is worn with a long kurta with long side slits.

Lehnga: The bias cut full length skirt. The Lehnga is usually worn as formal or party wear and comes in all fabrics and styles. It has a generous flare and touches the floor for added grace. It is usually worn with a blouse (choli), short shirt (kurti) or a skimpy top blouse layered with a below-the-knee gown.

Ghagra: The outfit of the gypsy tribes of southern India and Pakistan. This skirt has very generous flare and is thickly gathered at the waist line (ball gown flare). The ghagra is worn with a short blouse and a wide Dupatta (chaddar). Usually worn by the younger or more daring crowd.

Sharara: The Lehnga with a join at or below the knee level. The skirt area below the knee is very full (trumpet skirt) in flare and resembles an open umbrella. The Sharara is floor sweeping ( farshi) and is worn with a kurti and with one or more dupattas. When two dupattas are worn, one is usually used as a veil and the other is draped on the shoulders. This is a very formal attire extremely ornate and best suited to weddings. The origins of the Sharara are said to be in the design aesthetics of the moghul princesses. Wide culottes are not the Sharara as may be listed on other sites!

Gharara: The Sharara split in two!  Originally the attire of the Nobility of Lucknow, is now the wedding ensemble of most Pakistani brides. It is extremely elegant and very full in flare at the knee area(two trumpet skirts constructed like pants). The Gharara has a concentration of work at the knee also known as the goat. It is worn with a kurti and full dupatta. It can also be layered with a kurti and an transparent organza gown, duster or overlay.

oooh i am in definite need for fashion advise. I think the layered shalwar kamizas are in and the short top with a lenga is also very in. my family has not gone in pakistan in forever and sometimes the shops here are really expensive. i have got  five sisters (mashallah) so something not sooo expensive would sound great....

i really love the the blue abaya that se7en posted, and the pakistani wedding website was great aurora, its given me some great ideas for future clothes whenever my family goes to paki. again...

anybody know some places that are not expensive like in the possible (30 - 40 $ range?)

Arright peeps... a fashion update...

I went with the pants which is a good choice... cause right now they're hot!!  it's the sleeveless or short sleeved tight top that is thigh length and tightish pants that have a slit at the bottom types.  those are in... usually they have some kind of bead work/embroidery on the hem of the kameez and at the bottom of the pants.  ok and as for lenghas.. short top is still good, thigh length tops might pass but lower than that out! and the new lenghas have interesting crinkly goldish fabric inside and a see through net on top with alot of beedwork/sequin stuff...so to sum it all up it's all about pants and net!

ariight i'll send another update after the wedding on formal wear...

btw i totally found my wedding dress...

sooo glad i came across this thread!  the abayas  mentioned earlier are sooo beautiful, i'm def going to start saving up!  but those wedding dresses jannah are amazing, i dont know how one would choose just one, but my vote rests on that first maroon one.  i dont know about anywhere else in the us, but here in cleveland the knee-length dresses with pants underneath are verrry in.  it looks especially nice when you can find one with the wide flaired sleeves.  now what do you sistas all where when you wake up one morning and u feel too lazy to wear a skirt, and there are no available abayas?  my prob is never being able to find something comfy but conservative enough!  (maybe we can answer that after the whole formal thing is over  ;D)

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah,

I just attended a wedding today and mashaAllah the bride looked *gorgeous*.  I cannot get over her dress, it was really, really, *really* beautiful :)  It was a dark maroon color, the top plain, and the dupatta and lengha skirt completely covered with intricate, pale gold, flowery designs *sigh*

For those of you in the northeast all I can say is KARISMA, Jackson Heights, NYC.  Their dresses are *gorgeous*.. though the prices are crazzyyy.  The bride and her sisters all bought their outfits there and they were all beautiful.. (and when my bro and sis-in-law got married, we bought her outfits from there also :))

If I find a pic of a dress similar to the brides, I'll post it inshaAllah :)

btw I can safely say the new thing in desi fashion is the narrow skirt  ;)

Hi all!

Even as a non-Muslima I really liked these outfits, especially the suits and the long cardigan ensemble!  Why can't these be fashions for Western women as well?  I wore long dresses like Seven posted when I lived in Saudi (at least until the Gulf war when we weren't allowed to any more) and found them really comfortable.  I'm gonna take a moment here to rant and rave about the tacky clothes many American women wear.  What's up with that halter top thingee that looks like a napkin held together with shoelaces?! I'm always nervous whenever a woman wears one of those around me cause it doesn't look very stable! One good sneeze and the mystery's gone!

i have my own theory on that. you see, it is a big conspiracy scam.  the current clothes i.e. modern and trendy are soo scanty. every label company is shrinking the women's clothes they sell.  the pants are tighter, the jackets/blouses are shorter, the long skirts have slits up to the waist line... it is just insanity! and i am only talking about winter clothes here!

but they market all of these as fashionable clothes and the prices are soo high compared to how much material is used. and this is the clincher.  according to this new theory - let's call it the zomorrud theory on modern fashion  :P - the fashion industry is sucking more money from people for much less original material, in other words basically robbing them left, right and centre with their consent and even encouragement.

wow, i feel so much better now. i needed that out of my system after all the frustration and resentment over the years from going shopping for some decent clothes to wear.

take care

Okay I have a question....

My sister got married last summer (MashaAllah)...and for every event I wore a new outfit, which I'm sure cost a lot of money, even by North American standards (my aunt back in Pakistan got them made...)

Now some of that stuff....especially the stuff I wore for the Mehndis and Dholkis...I know I can wear again at the various small party's that occur throughout the year.  But the wedding and walima stuff I don't see myself wearing ever again (even though they are very beautiful.)

Now, my brother is getting married in less than a year (inshaAllah)...and if I put my brain and conscience in a closet until that time, I'll probably have a dozen more new shaadi variety clothing.  Plus the heavy stuff that I will end up wearing at his wedding and walima, which I probably won't see myself wearing ever again.  (Y'all follow?)

So, the orders, once again, are going in for the clothes....and I was wondering what you ladies think:  Would it be a fashion faux-pas if I wore the stuff I wore to my sister's wedding..to my brother's wedding?  Assuming, of course, that many of the guests will be the same too, I'm kind of feeling iffy about doing this....

Maybe I could switch it around. Just don't want to be wasteful...I feel really bad about it.

Wasalaam.

WOW :o :o :o :o :o what a great thread and the timing is great, some people i know r going on hajj so i'm going to try to persuade them, if they have time to bring me back a couple of Abayas.....

as for the wedding dresses, well here in the uk the majority of people will go to Pakistan with photos of designs and have clothes made for a fraction of what they would cost here, and i'm talking thousands of pounds for the type of clothes Jannah has got pics of.

Even everyday Shalwaar Kameez are sooooooooo expensive here compared to having clothes made for u out in Pakistan. and of course you can then specify long sleeves and non see through designs ;D

So what about the ladies who don't always wear jelbabs? Where do you shop?
Personally I LOOOOVE H&M (Can I get a witness??!!) Who, coincidentally, is not on the Boycott List of Zionist Companies, unlike my past favorite (along with all Muslima's apparently) Lerner/NY & Co.
They sell scandelous clothes as well, don't get me wrong, but it's all about layering, especially bc Albany has about 4 feet of snow on the ground. Those sweater dusters come in handy!! And umm....I'm a bargain shopper so don't be surpised if you find me in Marshalls scooping up all the dusters on sale for $16.00!!   :o

For the last few years whenever i've bought any clothes/material I always find myself feeling terribly guilty. Whether it was a necessary or unnecessary purchase, and i always find myself trying to stave off that 'guilt' by emptying my cupboards of what i really dont need and giving it away. Maybe it has to do with the tight financial situation I had growing up, especially in my teens, perhaps, or maybe its just normal?

I dont know, i'm going off on tangents, sorry. Sister Original, your post made me want to write. Do what you feel comfortable with thats whats important. And about those outfits you mentioned the ones you dont feel like you'll wear again and yet feel like you should, (just an idea), if no one would be offended (i.e. those who bought/gave the outfits and then those that would receive them) you could seek out those in need who might benefit. I know a lady, who did just that with her own wedding oufits, just gave them away to a woman who was getting married a few months afterwards and came from a family that was very poorly off.  If you're willing to part with them of course, it could be a possible solution to your dilemma and make you feel a whole lot better at the same time ;)

haha saadia... i like H&M too they have some really nice things sometimes. Also good places to scope out (only if you're wearing sneakers) are the big department stores.. macys penney's boscov's..you can sometimes find some nice things but its more like a scavenger hunt!!  also nyc they have tons of places to buy clothes AND they are extremely stylish... but this is the best time to shop b/c all the winter stuff is out and more halalish than the skimpy summer clothes...

about wedding/eid clothes i always thought sisters should put together a community exchange program.. cause everyone has these fancy outfits that thay can't really wear again and again... so sisters in one community should send all their fancy smancy stuff to sisters in another community and that way everyone can have nice new stuff!! :) ahh well so before that.. maybe you can try what we do here, that is just trade our clothes around for different events.. cause people usually don't notice when an outfit is on another person with different accessories :)

Just to say i luv this thread...some wicked outfits..so beautiful...and plus thy've given me some ideas for my friends wedding..although she's pretty much got it all planned

One thing me and one of my friends do is borrow each others outfits so at least she doesnt have to buy stuff for weddings (there can be so many family weddings at one time that u dont feel right wearing the same outfit) so it saves her on the money.
I like the idea of giving or sharing ur fancy clothes cos they just end up sitting in the wardrobes for a few months/years till u think ppl have forgotten that u once wore it  ::) Plus these clothes can be expensive sometimes and not everyone can afford them.

btw..i was flicking thru some news channel and they mentioned albany bcos of all the snow u have there (all i heard was the name and someone shovelling some 10inches of snow  :D) and i was like wow...that place really does exist then  ;) neway just thought i'd mention that  :)

And good advice sis jannah..best to buy some clothes now from the shops esp h&m...less of the skimpy clothing and more stuff which is suitable to wear...plus there may still be some stuff left in the winter sales...if the sales-crazy ppl have left nething.  i like just window shoppin in h&m..it would help if i had the money to spend

Neway I think i have had a long enuf break...back to the books  :(
