the troublemaker strikes again.......
i was just wondering how everyone deals with the touchy topic of race.  usually when i hear people making a sketchy comment i take it upon myself to try and educate them otherwise.  this method has worked in the past, but recently at school i've encountered difficulties with certain ignorant people.  ::)  especially when they adamantly believe their views aren't offensive.   :o
this has in turn left me with the choice to give up on trying to enlighten others of various cultures, religions etc. i figure u can bring a horse to water but you can't make it drink.
tell me there is a way out of this wilderness of confusion and hopelessness.  :-/   or am i doomed like so many others to seek shelter in conformity and perputuate ignorance.

tibet

p.s. anyone that knows me can testify that conformity, for me, is a fate worse than death.
this thread has got me a little upset, guess i need a cool sip of  []

as salaamu alaykum / peace,

Tibet I know what you mean man.. I was at a friend's house recently, and during a conversation this one chica busted out with a racial slur (this one in particular referring to people of asian descent) .. me and jannah on one side of the table were like  :o  :o

The thing is, she said it so *casually*, like it was no big deal.. and when it was mentioned to her that it wasn't cool at all, she said she didn't even *know* that it was a bad thing to say!!  She said that that's what 'everyone' uses to refer to certain types of people.  She grew up in a pretty posh area of NJ, so I guess it's okay out there.

I don't know man.. tibet you and me both grew up in a pretty diverse area, and if you said anything racially offensive to anyone you'd get beat down by *someone* :)  so I guess you had to learn to be accepting and tolerant.  But I guess if you've never really had to deal with people who are ethnically, religiously, or racially different, you don't learn how to accept or deal with these differences.

One thing that disturbs me is when it comes from people you expect to *know better*.  Like educated people, people who are minorities themselves, etc.  And it really disturbs me to hear Muslims talk like that, especially considering what Islam says about race and diversity.  ("An Arab has no superiority over a non-Arab nor a non-Arab has any superiority over an Arab; a black has no superiority over white, nor a white has any superiority over black -- except by piety and good deeds.  Indeed the best among you is the one with the best character." -- Prophet Muhammad)

I guess the only thing you can do is attempt to educate.  And tibet, don't lose hope man.. sometimes a person may reject what you say in the moment of discussion, but later on with reflection and contemplation re-consider.

peace

What about the sisters who happen to be both? Should I tell them too or are we keeping it a secret?

Peace, Sparrow  ::)
