Difference between a Comforter and a Quilt? |

[slm] I've never visited this part of town before so I'll make this short ;) Recently I wanted to buy what I thought was a comforter. So I went to Sears to look for one. When I got to the bedding section I was like :o God knows what all they put on the bed here: comforter, quilt, throw, spread, sheet, blanket, skirt! .. whew. I ended up getting a comforter and when I opened it at home, it was not what I was looking for. It's inside surface is made of some rough fabric so I'm thinking this needs a lining or something? I'm looking for what they call "Razai" in India. Can anyone help me? Jazaka'llah Khair. PS: I posted in the Akhawat section because I know none of the bros will have a clue (no offence intended). I asked all my friends (all guys) and they were more clueless than me :D. [wlm] |

[color=blue] bismillah.. assalamu alaikum, i am not familiar with the "razai". however, i think what you bought was a duvet and it needs a duvet cover which can be removed for cleaning. these (duvets) are usually white or off-white and they are plain. duvets are relatively more expensive because they are down-filled. this means the stuffing is more fancy and softer (that's why it is not a good idea to wash, otherwise you'll ruin the down). a comforter is like a duvet, exept the color and pattern can be anything. the stuffing is not as high a quality as a duvet. but this does not need a cover and the material on the outside should be softer (depends on the make and quality). you'd have to put the whole thing in the washing machine to clean it up. a quilt is like a comforter in concept. the difference is that the outside is made of many pieces of fabric stitched together to create a unique design/look. the filling is much lighter, if present at all. usually, a quilt is used to cover the bed for aesthetic purposes, but you would not necessarily find it as warm as a duvet or a comforter. clear as mud?? take care wassalamu alaikum [/color] |

[slm] I'm impressed, zomorrud. ;) Bro Zahid, I'm just a little confoooosed....how come your comforter's inside had a rough surface? You mean you pulled it apart, and checked out the filling? I think a razai is similar to a quilt, yeh? But those things are like pure wool or something, and so it's like intensely warm. Or maybe I'm wrong and a razai is one of those furry blankets?? In which case, those are warm too. You should be able to find something similar at Sears, although it wouldn't be exactly a razai (it would be a quilt.) I say, go with the duvet...real easy to clean, and it feels you're sleeping on a cloud. :D Wasalaam. SF. |

[slm] Brother I think what you bought is called a "Bed Spread" here in canada. It has a design and soft cotton or something on the top, but the underneath has a white like itchy batting. Usually those are just for decoration and you still need blankets and sheets under it. You probably want to buy a comforter or a quilt (quilt are generally handmade with different types of patterns designed into them) if you want to keep the bed spread then you will have to buy a blanket and sheets to go underneath of it otherwise you will freeze :P Hope this helps [wlm] :-) Ayla_A |

[slm] JAK for the replies. I bought a duvet as Sr. zomorrud suggested and it is exactly what I was looking for. theOriginal: I didn't mean the internals of the comforter was rough, rather the side that you cover with (as opposed to the side that's on the outside.) [wlm] |
