REVIEW: Lives of the Prophets Volumes 1 - 4
by Imam Anwar al-Awlaqi, distributed by Al-Basheer Publications

I had originally intended to review the two sets separately, but i'll just do them as one.

In a nutshell these lectures (available as tapes or CDs) have become my favourite set of audio da'wah that i've heard. Imam Anwar delivers in lots of detail the history of the Prophets of Allah, and the lessons that we can learn from their lives and the situations they faced.

He starts right from the beginning with Sayyidina Adam in Paradise and finishes with Sayyidina Eesa (alaihimas-salaam).

The mode of delivery is crisp and clear and what impressed me the most was how he relates events that happened thousands of years ago to our own lives, and our own relationship with Allah. This is most apparent in his discussion of Sayyidina Musa and his experiences with the Pharaoh and the Children of Israel.

This is a must for everyone and something that you could leave for your family to listen to as well.

My rating: 10/10

Are the tapes based around the book called Stories of the Prophets by Ibn Kathir (for those who can't afford the audio tapes)

salam,

Kashif did you find a difference between the Vol. 1&2 and the Vol. 3&4? I absolutely loved 1 and 2 he really brought the stories into our lives and showed us examples of how we could take the lessons and apply them into our daily life especially for students.. ie sabr.. taking an exam etc... but then in 3&4 he just relates the stories and doesn't get into examples and bringing it home stuff. It was strange?

Shaykh Anwar's tapes were actually i belive and Allah knows best conference tapes.

Thus you will find tapes 1 & 2 more detailed, those were his first lectures.

Then later he continued with the series, and perhaps it was too long to cover all of the information of the rest of the prophets like he covered in the first two so he shortened it.

You will find that with most tapes or lectures given by Shaykhs, especially if they were given in a long difference of time spand.  People change, methods change.

Thus you may find the tapes different or the method in which he was speaking different.  Allah knows best.

Volumes 1 & 2 came out first.
Volumes 3 & 4 came out later.

They were sold seperately before, i am assuming you are getting the entire collection in one, so they probably kept the labelling as vol 1, 2, 3 and 4 to help distinguish the lectures.  This is actually a good idea, because then those who have bought the tapes from when its first out, still have the same vol 1 that you may have in an entire collection.

assalaamu alaikum

Yes, I definitely found a difference between the two volumes. I think the difference between the two was that in 1&2 the lessons to be drawn from each story were explicitly stated, however, in 3&4 the lessons to be drawn were still there but implicit in the lecture.

3&4 deal solely with the case of the Children of Israel and Imam Anwar spends a bit of time right at the beginning discussing why theses stories are particularly relevant to us, including proximity of time to this ummah, and the Prophet Muhammad's statements regarding how closely our ummah would follow that of the Children of Israel.

But i personally have a taste for history so perhaps my review was a bit biased.
