Hello, I was in a discusion with my aunt about the dietary laws Jewish and Muslim. My aunt was asking me about the Islamic ones. I brought out the Quran (the one Jannah sent me that was through someone else ;) thank you again) Anyway I looked in the back index and there were some references but I could not find specifics and by my taking to long she lost interest and left the room. Can someone tell me where in the Quran they are and also mention some of them in this post please. I know about pork, what else is not good? Thank you for any help. Cara |

Here are a few important verses from the Holy Quran that very clearly describe the Islamic laws regarding Halaal and Haraam: 1. O Mankind ! Eat the lawful (Halaal) and good things from what is in the earth, and follow not the footsteps of the devil. Surely he is an open enemy to you. (2: 168) 2. O believers ! Eat of the good things that We have provided you with and give thanks to Allah. (2: 172) 3. He has forbidden you what dies of itself (carrion), and blood, and the flesh of swine and that over which any name other than (that of) Allah has been invoked. (2: 173) 4. And eat of the lawful (Halaal) and good things that Allah has given you and keep your duty to Allah. (5: 88) 5. O believers ! Intoxicants, and game of chance, and idolatrous practices and divining (of the future through) arrows are abominations devised by the Satan. Shun it then !, so that you may prosper. (5: 90) |

Thank you Kathy. More questions though Anything else besides pork and drinking? What does it mean dies of itself, is that any death other than butchering? Thank You. My aunt asked and I couldn't find things quick enough. |

My understanding is it is an anilmal that just dies a natural death. The pork and drinking sounds like a simple process, but it isn't. Things that contain these items in them would not be permissible. For example. We can not eat most marshmellows.. because they contain gelatin which most likely is a pig derivitive. Many foods containing letchitin, are off limits... again because of animal byproducts in the chemical. Which gets me to the next point. There are different views on this. Meat that has been Islamically slaughtered is called Zabhia meat. Some Muslims eat meat that is halal- permissable, but not zabhia. Those Muslims who eat only Zabhia, have many more restrictions. So many processed foods have animal byproducts, chemicals, etc... With drinking there are other things we have to worry about. There is often alcohol in baking items, like vanilla extract, brewers yeast and whey. Here is a site that will give you more info: www.muslimconsumergroup.com/ Oh... and we can not eat frog legs! Or animals with meat slashing claws like bear, wolf etc... |

Kathy, Thank you for all the info and the refernces to look these things up in the Quran. Like I mentioned earlier, we were discussing dietary laws and I didn't know how to respond factually. Looked up the ones in the Bible, wanted to see and study and compare the different ones. Again thank you, Cara |
