Here is the GRY riddle in it's original form going back 20 years. Look at it and remember that there are parts of this riddle that want to throw you off the path. Try to solve it, or at least understand it before heading off to the final explanation:

"Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them. There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

Now try to figure it out sis.. and if you are still stuck, read what i have below ..  :)

Solving the GRY riddle:

Sound familar - "There are 3 words in the English..ahhh!
The dreaded GRY riddle! To understand this riddle, let me give you some insight on how it all got started - 20 years ago! This riddle, if told in it's "orginal form" is not all that difficult to figure out. But it's been diluted and changed so much over the years it has "no answer" if not told properly!

Here's an example how you may have seen it:
"There are three words in the English language that end in GRY. Two are HUNGRY and ANGRY. The third one everyone uses every day and knows what it stands for. If you listened carefully, I already told you what the word is."

Wrong, wrong, WRONG! No wonder no one can figure it out! So, you ask...what is the right version? Patience young whipper-snapper! First a short lesson about riddles.

By definition, a riddle is simply a mind-trick using words as bait. A riddle is not meant to be a question which you can run to the nearest dictionary to find the answer...what fun would that be! Just like a great magician, a great riddle will boggle the mind.

In its original form, the first two sentences have absolutely "nothing" to do with the question: "Think of words ending in -GRY. Angry and hungry are two of them." Ignore those two sentences. They are there only to throw you off. (Worked, didn't it?)

What's left is the actual riddle itself: "There are only three words in the English language. What is the third word? The word is something that everyone uses every day. If you have listened carefully, I have already told you what it is."

The key is the phrase "the English language." In this three-word phrase, the third word is simply the word "language." "Language" is definitely something that "everyone uses every day"! Without that quirky little twist, the puzzle would just be another trivia question, and not a riddle.

Remember, the thing about riddles is, you must follow them to the letter or they just don't work. The GRY riddle has gotten so screwed up over the years, it's turned into somewhat of a hoax or a funky joke.

So there you have it ...the GRY riddle solved! Now please send this page to everyone you know so they "stop emailing me" to tell me how stupid our riddles are!
