| [slm] Does anyone know anything about a book called 'Umdat As Saliq'? My Imam plans to start using it to teach the fiqh class at our masjid and I was wondering if anyone had anything to say about the book? (What does the title mean?) [wlm] |

| It is known in English as [i]Reliance of the Traveller[/i]. It is well-known.... it is the main book for shafi'ee law. Wassalamu Alaiakum, Deen :-) |

as salaamu alaykum wa rahmatAllah, The book's full name is "Umdat as Saalik wa 'Uddat an Nasik", which means "Reliance of the Traveller and Tools of the Worshipper".. Just to try to curb things before they start.. the English version of Reliance of the Traveler translated by Nuh Ha Mim Keller has some controversial parts in its appendices, in regard to its criticism of Ibn Taymeeya and others. wasalaamu alaykum :-) |

| [slm] Just to add to what se7en said above, the *Arabic* version of the book (i.e. the original version) is used as a text to teach fiqh in many parts of the world, including Saudi Arabia, to those whose knowledge of fiqh is extremely rudimentary or non-existent. It only gives the rulings according to one madh-hab, i.e. Shaafi'ee. |

| JAK for the replies. Our Imam says that when he was studying (in Syria .. he's Syrian) he read that book so much that he almost knows it by heart! He said that although the book discuss fiqh according to the Shafie madhab, he will tell us in class what the other madhab have to say about the issue being discussed. [wlm] |
