Judging from your romantic adoration for madina, I'm guessing you've never been to Medina before. So take this from someone who knows the place very well. Madina of present day is nothing like the Madina of the prophets times. Other than the Prophets masjid the city is like any other arab muslim city. So if I were you I won't have my hopes high.

oh and in response to your question, yes you can live in madina but you cannot retire in madina

I beg to differ :)  Every single person I know (including myself) who has ever been to Madina has really felt that it's different from any other place on earth.  Everyone agrees that there's a baraka (blessing) there that's not felt anywhere else, that it makes one feel tranquil and at peace (even though if you just look at it it looks like any modern arab city).  It just feels completely different.  The Prophet (S) spoke of the many blessings of this city (that Allah gave it to yawm al Qiyyamah), and among the things he (S) said is: "However is able to die in Madinah should do so"...  It's also the city where Eeman will retreat to at the end of time.  You can really feel these things.
I've heard it's very hard to get residency in Saudi, especially in Madina.  The best way i suppose is to look for a job there.

Seems to me like Madina is well coveted by its own residents.

Jazak ullah khair Brother and Sisters?
Even from the few replies i have recived i am very thankful. And i am so glad  that it is possible to live in madinainshallha, one day :-*.
I know a Brother/Sister mentioned i should try getting a job there, inshallah, that is what i was thinking of, a lecurer perhaps? i also think that jobs as doctors an in medicine are good, but im more into business, medincine not my ken intrest ???
i am living in UK, but would like to ,inshallah, move and go to a university called Alakhaywan of Ifrane, MOROCCO, Atlas mountain (i think),  to study for a degree.  Had anyone been there? i hear there are many "jewish" influnce? but u get it evrywhere in da western world!? would this universtiy have good link to work in saudi arabia, ie post gradution employmenyt.

IF, as the person who rote an reply mentioning the blessing of living in madina, being buried in madina, an where emman will return etc.
Knowing the blessing of Madina, WHY DOES NOT EVRYONE MIGRATE TO MADINA? ( it may seem a stupid question? but i would like to know why are so many people missing out in this blessing? is it because people enjoy the "western luxuries" of fitnah etc etc....? ir maybe it just me saying this because i live in da "western world", but i am sick an tired of living here, esp in UK, da weather :-[, fitnah, etc etc. i would like to move out!! for good (but unfortunaly i cannot retire in madina) wat do evryone think about migrated to madina?

PS i wouldnt like to move away this topic to comparing living sttandards of living in da west or east, or which univesrty is the best, or jobs...i would like to find out how to move to madina, inshal, as was the purpose i started the topic, but Allah knows best what will come

Why can't a person retire in Madina? (sssuming of course, that the person had the means to support themselves.)

I know you can't become a citizen I talked to some residents while I there in 2001. They work there, but even their children who were born there could not become citizens. I too was taken by the city when I stayed there and threaten to run away to Madina every chance I get!  ;D
I still dream of the Prophet's Mosque  [saw] and remember clearly alhamdullilah the very first time I saw it. I was speechless and crying at the same time. It hit me then that I was really there.

Why?! Well, because there is no such thing as permanent residency or naturalization in saudi arabia, atleast the way we understand it here in the US. You are legally permitted to reside in saudi arabia as long as your employer lets you. The day you lose your job they ship you out of the country. Basically, they're running on a medieval feudal system. If your "lord" is happy with you, you get to stay, if not, out you go. Pretty ingenious if you look at it from their point of view.

My husband and I used to work there.
Yes, there is that "influence" that you heard about.  That's one of the main reasons we left.  We have no problem with "tolerance" as they call it, but it has to extend to Muslims as well if you know what I mean.  They do not tolerate highly practicing Muslims there for very long.   There was a student who used to give lessons in the mosque there but after a while they prevented him.  There was another student who was very sweet and shy and practicing with a beard (he had even gone on hajj) but they found a way to get rid of him...
One day we wanted to have a day of solidarity with Palestine, and they didn't let us show this documentary that showed the Palestinian side.  "It's biased" they said.
There are many colloquia on "tolerance" every year.
It was oppressive after a while.  You be tolerant or else!
Also, it is said that the university is basically run by the King's Jewish advisor.
So that's the answer to your question.
It doesn't have as good a reputation as it did in the very beginning, although there's a handful of people with principles there.
In other words, I wouldn't recommend it, in any case not for any long amount of time, like the time it would take to get a degree.
But that's just my point of view.... :)

Unfortunately according to out dear Saudi brothers being a Muslim does not qualify one to reside in the sanctuary of Muslims – the Arabian Peninsula -- let alone Mecca or Medina themselves. In fact Saudi’s basically treat all non-saudi’s like garbage: they make you prove you are muslim when entering Mecca or medina (despite the fact the burden of proof lies upon them when someone claims to be a Muslim), they were going to fingerprint all Hajj pilgrims this year but had to postpone it until next year because they were not organized enough to do it yet.
Is this how Muslims are supposed to treat other Muslims?
It really makes you wonder why so many Muslims have this unfounded understanding that everything associated with this state is Islamic.
