You Who Commit A Sin

assalamu alaikum

Abdullaah Ibn Abbas (radiallahu anhu) said: "You who commit a sin, do not feel secure about the results, for what goes along with the sin is more serious than the sin itself.Your lack of shame before the angels, who witness you when you commit the sin, is more serious than the sin itself.Your laughter when you sin, as you forget the punishment of Allah is more serious than the sin itself. Your delight if you get a chance to sin, is more serious than the sin itself. Even your disappointment, if you miss a chance to sin is more serious than the sin itself."

This is what my calendar had for yesterday's date, kind of goes along with the above quote,

"If you feel pleasure performing a good deed and feel remorse committing an evil, you are a true Muslim." (Musnad Ahmed)

Okay this quote has really got me thinking.  SubhanAllah...I've read it again and again since the day you posted it, and I'm wondering if anyone has any information on perhaps a little historical background for it??  Or ANYTHING??

It would really be helpful.

Wasalaam..

the original you can look for the article 'The Effect of Sins' by Ibn al Qayyim. It has alot of similar things.  Basically we commit a sin and think oh it's just 1 sin that's all it is, but in reality it has a lot of consequences and there's a lot more going on.

as salaamu alaykum,

Here's another translation of the same quote by Abdullah ibn 'Abbas:

O you who sin! Do not feel immune to punishment for your sins, for such attitude is a greater sin thant the original one. When you do not feel ashamed for yourselves before the two guardian angels who are situated at your right and left sides, that too is a more awesome sin than the original one. To laugh after committing a sin, not knowing what punishment is awaiting you is a more ominous sin as well. To feel excited about what you have gained by committing your sin is yet a greater sin. To feel sorrow for missing an opportunity to gain the forbidden fruit of a sin, is again a greater sin. To feel apprehensive, or afraid, when the wind blows against your window curtains, in fear of being exposed, is yet a greater sin, and when your heart does not shiver, and dismisses the knowledge that you are never away, not even for a fraction of a second, from the sight of Allah, the Lord of majesty and glory - that is yet a more awesome sin.
