is there a doctor in the house?!!

as salaamu alaykum,

for those of you in med school, doing your residency, or are involved in the medical field, I have some question for u from a friend:

-- can you still have a life in med school?  meaning, can u be active islamically, attend halaqas and spend time at the masjid, see your friends, be sociable, etc and still do well?

-- can you get through med school if you work hard, even if you're not really smart?

-- how are P.A.'s treated/seen by doctors and other ppl in the med field?

jazakam Allahu khayran :)

wasalaamu alaykum :-)

Assalaamu alaykum Se7en,

I'm still doing my pre-med studies, so I can't really answer the questions you've posted - except to say that if your friend isn't afraid of working hard and really committed to studying medicine then to go for it by all means.

Here's a link to a medstudents forum thats helped me a lot in the past, and it might be of some help to your friend, http://pub125.ezboard.com/bpremed101

I'm not in the US, but I guess medical school pretty much works the same all over the world...it's a dog's life, hehe :P

Seriously though:
-- can you still have a life in med school?  meaning, can u be active islamically, attend halaqas and spend time at the masjid, see your friends, be sociable, etc and still do well?

The answer is YES, inshaAllah. (of course, working with my definition of what a "life" constitutes).  But it is NOT EASY! Many sisters here are active Islamically, we have halaqahs etc.  Mostly these are with other med students though.  My non-medic friends usually schedule our meetings for days I have free or weekends I have free (sometimes makes you think the world revolves around you, hehe, other times makes you feel totally isolated:( )

The first few years (non-clinical) are the best as far as time is concerned to socialise etc.  There is enough time to do everything, and you don't have to stress about killing anyone! (not joking, lol)

When you reach the clinical years, everyone has their own time-table, and it is almost impossible for even medic sisters to find time to spend with each other, cuz everyone has to be in different places at different times....

Anyway, I do have a friend who paints really marvelous goodies, and I still find the time to meet my writing deadlines (ok, ok, so I make the editor wait sometimes, but thank Allah he understands)...other sisters have other even more time-consuming hobbies (incl being married and/or having kids) and they cope well, alhamdulillah!

So moral of the long story: POSSIBLE, but difficult.  Requires a great deal of time-management skill.  Plus side is that when you DO see your friends, it's extra special:)  Second plus: all the fumes in the dissection halls and later in the septic units of the surgical wards, kinda numb your brain, and you forget what having a "life" means to normal people:)

-- can you get through med school if you work hard, even if you're not really smart?
THATS HOW I MADE IT THIS FAR!!! ;) (again NOT kidding! )  I really believe that the people who work hard make a success out of it (not just in terms of grades/marks/results, but actually become GOOD doctors)...relying on your Allah-given intelligence can only get you so far, and usually it is not far enough! (*And Man shall only that which he strives for*-Quraan, cant remember proper reference, sorry)

-- how are P.A.'s treated/seen by doctors and other ppl in the med field?
What are P.A's?

Just came back from an overnight call...mind not working too well, hope I kinda answered the q's, and hope that I dont sound too pessimistic, or alternatively too joky about this "life"...will give it another go when I am sober inshaAllah.

Wish your friend all the best, may Allah guide her to what is best for her, and make it easy for her. Ameen

Salam
Shahida

Life sure is hard, esp in med school with demanding schedules ,studies and
clinical rotations ,but still if you have the will insha Allah you can attend the halqas and other islamic activities( some if not all of them) but then one has to scarifise other forms of socializing entertainment etc

Can you have the cake and eat it too  ;)  Maybe but one has to get their priorities right

Believe me one can reflect on Allah swts creation and power in med school
if one ponders the science of anatomy,physiology..............
but one needs the insight to look and the eyes too see  ;)

Ah yes I know of one Hafiz in Chicago who leads the taravih prayers during Ramazan and juggles med school

Assalamu Alaikum,

Q1.  The answer is yes.  Med school is hard but its no dungeon, Al-Hamdulillah (although i can swear it sometime seems like that).

Q2.  Absolutely.

Q3.  That sounds like an american term so i wont comment on it.

Btw, I'm talking here about medical school in Pakistan which is a 5 year MBBS course (ie no pre-med).

Hope this helps

Wassalamu Alaikum

I was once Pre-med also, I'm still thinking about it but at the moment I'm working as an educator.  I can't really answer your questions from experience, but I do know others who have lived and worked through medical school and who has kept their "Islamic lives" and beyond.

One such person is Shaykh Husain Abdul Sattar, a brother in Chicago who's very young, yet he was able to complete his 'Alim course from Pakistan, complete medical school, teach and give lectures.  He actually took a break during medical school and studied abroad; I think first he studied some books under Shaykh Muhammad al-Ya'qoobi in Syria, and afterwards continued his Islamic studies in Pakistan where he stayed in a traditional madrasah and completed his 'Alim course. He came back to the US, completed his medical degree and is now working as a doctor and at the same time teaching, giving lectures and writing books. He has a website where you can listen to his lectures and learn about the program he and a few other brothers have started in Chicago at http://www.madrasaprogram.org/

In Sha Allah we think that our lives are so busy, yet we don't understand how much time we have and how lacking we are as Muslims (in general) in our worship of Allah. Allah is the First and the Last, He is the One who created time; we should have faith in Him that He is the Only One who can give us the taufiq to complete the things we need to do in our lives.

Remember three of the five things that the Prophet [saw] has advised us to take heed of: 1) free time before being busy, 2) health before illness, and 3) youth before old age.

Fi Amanillah.

Q1: yes you can still have a life, it's just harder and you're time is squished more, so you have less of it to waste. a schedule is important to be able to fit in all the things you want to do. it is hard though. i know i look at all the girls in undergrads nearby and mashallah they have a lot of time to do things that i don't have time to do and sometimes i feel like i'm missing out, b/c we don't get very many breaks.  but allahu alim, my mom always says there's ibadah in everything you do, like studying or helping people.

Q2: yes! i agree w/ shahida. honestly it's like 10% smarts and 90% hard work. the ideas/concepts aren't difficult, it's just a LOT of it at once. it's all about volume.

Q3: i think PA's are great. somtimes i think i would rather go to them for like a yearly physical b/c they are able to spend more than 15 mins w/ you. and usually they're very conversational and easy to get along w/.  i forget if they can write prescriptions or not, i don't think they do.

i think in the end, everyone is busy, it's just a matter of making time for what you want to do. if islam is a priority in your life then you'll make it one whether you don't have a job at all and have lots of time or if you work 80 hours a week.  inshallah :)

SubhanAllah  ruqayyah!!! We discussed something similar to this at our halaqah last week   A sister said that how she felt, she was wasting her life going to school from 10-10 and felt she could dooo a lot  more islamically if she had less school work. And Sis RD and HA said its all about balancing and sometimes even if we a lot of time on our hands we end up not doing much. And many times in winter/summer break, one ends up wasting more time than utilizing it... It is about niyah, taking everything in your life to excellence and understanding that Allah(swt) wants to us to strive in this dunya.

My father always told me that going to school and working hard could be an Ibadah if one has the niyyah of doing this for Allah swt and think by working hard now one could be the zariyah of help  to the creation of Allah swt and this would be a zariyah where one could earn Halal rizq (India being one of the epitomes of financial corruption)

Well, for me personally I decided of going to nursing school instead. It has a piece of both worlds I think. On one side I get to spend time with family more and not worry about being called in the middle of the night and on the other I get to be in the health setting which I absolutely love. I have Nurse Practioner as a goal which is probably the closest thing to a doctor.

Wa'alaikum Assalam wa Rahmatullah,
can you still have a life in med school?  meaning, can u be active islamically, attend halaqas and spend time at the masjid, see your friends, be sociable, etc and still do well?
I haven't been through med. school here, but I do have some idea about it. In general, I think medical school life is as hectic anywhere as here. As far as remaining Islamically active is concerned, I don't think its impossible, but yes it definitely would be difficult to keep up with every halaqa, meeting, conference, socialization etc. However, my thinking is that, it really depends on how motivated and dedicated u are, primarily not to ur medical career, but to ur religion. So, it can easily vary to extremes from individual to individual.
can you get through med school if you work hard, even if you're not really smart?
Yeah, I am a living example:).
how are P.A.'s treated/seen by doctors and other ppl in the med field?
That depends on the doctor how he/she sees other people whether they are P.As or nurses or whatever. But, I am of the opinion that in general, no profession is seen disrespectfully here in States. Other than that, what I have heard of is that P.As are considered as a doctor's right hand (but that's something 'heard', so dont rely on that so much).

Wallahu Ta'ala A'lam.

Wassalam.
