waging war?

I was talking with a non Muslim about religion and war was brought up. I said that in Islam, we are not allowed to murder anyone, nor are we allowed to wage a war, but we are only allowed to defend ourselves, our people, our land, our country, ect.. if attacked first. she then wrote this and I need help with an answer.

[i]This I would like more info on. Perhaps the Quran teaches this just as Jesus said turn the other cheek. But I have seen many, many, historical references showing that even while Muhammad was still alive, the early Muslims spread the word and conquered the neighboring countries at the same time. It was apparently a matter of believe or die. I am not trying to be offensive at all. I certainly have a long list of Christian atrocities as well.[/i]

Jazak Allah khair if you can help me. :)

It is true that they conquered many countries and did da'awa.
The part about believe or die is false. All those who believed were let to live as free men and those who were not muslim had to pay 'jazia' a tax but allowed to live as free men.
Even in Spain the Golden Era is the time of the muslim rule, and it went from tolerance to other religions to intolerance when the catholic church was in charge.
As Arabs the people of Muhammad[pbuh] explored many territories [some times with wars] and brought with them advancement and new and improved systems to less civilized places. Many many times the take over was not after a war.  And lead to the improvement of the place and contentment of the people.
When I look at the history of mankind I have not come across another set of people who came and took over the rule of a land , and treated them with more fairness or even humanity than the muslims.
Yet, as far as I remember the wars and conquering of any land in the time of the prophet[pbuh] was not done without provocation. If I remember correctly the prophet[pbuh] only sent his sahabi to spread the message before he died. You might want to check this point with your friend and ask her for her source. I can cross check.
