... the following two books (if you have read them). If you think there is a better book on the same topic, please suggest them. I want to buy these books but because of the cost involved, I thought I would get other suggestions first:

1. Ibn Qayyim al-Jawziyya on the Invocation of God
Al-Wabil al-Sayyib

2. Al-Ghazali on Disciplining the Soul & on Breaking the Two Desires
(Books XXII and XXIII of Ihya’`Ulum al-Din)

Assalamu Alaikum Br.Zahid...

I assure *both* these books will be one of the best investments you've ever made inshallah. You'll be getting your money's worth and much much more!

Although I have both books, I haven't completed either. If you read the first page of Al-Waabilus-Sayyib.. you'll know why. Subhanallah...even in english, you can spend an hour just reading, absorbing and reflecting over the first page.

Another thing you might consider doing, although their is a difference of opinion on the matter is to photocopy someon else's copy of these two books, because as you said, it does cost alot.

Hope that helps :*)

Your sister,
Deen :-)

I think you will find Invocation of God to be one of the most beautiful and beneficial books that you have ever come across in English.

Breaking the Two Desires is also a great book, however the footnotes are at times problematic because of certain tendencies of the translator.

Both books are very deep, although the former is moreso than the latter I think.  Both books are not just meant to be read in leisure, but to produce a real inner change which should consequently be manifested in the outward.

Buy the books!  Don't just photocopy em!  We need to support the few translators out there that are really putting in a lot of money and effort to translate some of the most beautiful pearls of wisdom that are contained in Ibn Taymiyyah, Ibn al-Qayyim and al-Ghazali's books (rahimahum Allaah).

Wallahu a'lam.

Alhamd'lillah. I think that gives me more than enough incentive to buy both books. Jazak'allah khair.

Expect a book review sometime next January :)

Assalamu alaikum
The Invocation of God is a beautiful book, ma sha Allah all of Ibn Al Qayyim's books are.  The Arabic version also has all the du'aas included, the English translation didn't include that because you can find them anywhere.  It's about all the benefits of dhikr (I think there are over 100 benefits explained! Subhan Allah).
Plus the English translation was done by my dad :D  So yes, I highly recommend it ;)

Sr. M.F., is your father working on translating any other works?  Anything by Ibn al-Qayyim?

Assalamu alaikum,
Jazakum Allah khair for the du'aas :)  I'll transmit them to my father insha Allah.
I don't think he's working on anything else right now.  It took YEARS to do the first one!  Maybe when he retires in a few years he'll work on some more books insha Allah.
