"The real aims of a war against Iraq"

It now seems abundantly clear that an all-out American invasion of Iraq has become inevitable. The vitriolic statements we keep hearing from Washington leave us with little doubt as to the Bush Administration's designs and intentions vis-a-vis Iraq and other Arab- Muslim peoples around the globe. Indeed, the cowboy-style bellicosity, as brazenly expressed by [George War] Bush and his warlike aides, shows that the U.S. is becoming a global tyrant unbound by any semblance of international legality. What other conclusion could one draw from Bush's warnings to the United Nations that "either you do it, or we will?"

The declared pretexts for the planned war on Iraq are to disarm the thoroughly tormented Arab country, to eliminate alleged "weapons of mass destruction," and also to topple the secular and indisputably evil regime of Saddam Hussein.

But these are only pretexts that mask the real motives. Iraq's fault, in America's view, is not that it is ruled by a repressive regime. Who among America's "allies" and "friends" in the Middle East is not repressive?

It is more than clear that America, a country intoxicated by its huge military power and blinded by irrational Islamophobia, is planning to achieve three main goals by invading and occupying Iraq.

The first and most important goal is to consolidate Israel's political, military and strategic supremacy in the region by neutralizing any potential challenge or opposition to Zionist hegemony and expansionism. Indeed, the brazen Israeli enthusiasm to the planned war on Iraq highlights the strong Israeli factor in this so-called "preemptive war" on the Arab country. Needless to say, Israel and her strong allies in Washington, who actually tightly control the American political scene whether at the White House or in the Congress, want the war to take place as soon as possible in order to enable Israel to effect its own nefarious plans vis-a-vis the Palestinians. Such plans seem to range from imposing a capitulatory agreement on the already moribund Palestinian Authority to carrying out a "transfer" of hundreds of thousands of Palestinians, or even millions, to Jordan or western Iraq, all to allow Israel to enjoy a purely Jewish State with as few goyim as possible.

However, since deporting that many people couldn't possibly be carried out without at least a partial genocide, one would expect that as soon as U.S. planes begin raining death on Baghdad, the Israeli Army would concomitantly start carrying out genocidal massacres in Gaza, Nablus, Jenin, Tulkarm, Qalqilya, Ramallah, Bethlehem and Hebron.

The second American goal of the war on Iraq is, of course, the procurement of oil. American rapacity for oil knows no limits. The Robert Barons of Washington feel that controlling Arabian oil is a sine qua non for consolidating America's global hegemony and predominance. It is as simple as that.

Finally, America apparently wants to redraw the geopolitical map of the Middle East. This conspicuously imperialistic venture may be aimed at dismantling some of the existing nation-States as well as the possible creation of new political entities that would be totally dependent on and controlled by the United States.

Of course, very few Arabs and Muslims would be sorry for the removal from power of existing despotic autocrats who continue to deny their people their most basic human, civil and political rights, including the right to elect their governments.

Frankly, the prospect of removing the hated dictators is most welcomed by the vast majority of Arabs and Muslims.

However, the Arab masses have the right to ask the following questions: Would the U.S. seek to replace the nefarious dictators in Arab capitals by democratically elected rulers who would be responsible and answerable to the masses, not to the White House, as is the case now? Would the United States allow the Arab masses to experience the taste of genuine democracy and civil liberties?

It is the U.S., after all, who has been maintaining these despicable autocracies, monarchies, oligarchies and decadent fiefdoms in power for so long in return for guarding America's imperialistic interests. And that was the main root cause of the strident collective Arab hatred of America.

And now, America seemingly wants to create in the Arab world a new breed of puppet regimes modelled after Hamid Karzai of Afghanistan whereby America controls those who control the masses.

In fact, there is already talk of appointing an American military governor of Iraq and of dividing Saudi Arabia into three small States. Some speak of reviving the Hashemite dynastic rule in Iraq.

More to the point, the Arab and Muslim masses from Jakarta to Casablanca would not just cling to their television sets and watch passively as U.S. warplanes rain death on Baghdad.

Every Arab and Muslim is likely to become a powder keg, a martyrdom bomber, or even an Osama Bin Laden, in case America launches its contemplated crusade on Iraq.

Indeed, the recent events in Indonesia and Moscow, however repugnant and morally obnoxious they are, would look like child games compared to what could happen if America decided to disregard the feelings of 1.5 billion human beings.

Nonetheless, America, with little wisdom and a modicum of goodwill, can easily avoid all of these ominous tribulations. And the prescription for that is to peacefully but forcefully foster democracy in the Arab world. Then, the Arab masses would show gratitude to the U.S. for a long, long time to come.
