Assalamu 'alaikum wa rahmatulahi wa barakatuhu! I was wondering if anyone has any experince or information about the Graduate School of Islamic & Social Sciences in Leesburg, Virginia? I've been in dialogue with the school's Admissions Director, have the catalog and insha'Allah, plan to visit the campus during my reading week -- but I'm looking for people who are attending, have graduated, or who just know more about the school (or who have friends there). Any help would be greatly appreciated -- I'm writing from Ontario, and would really *love* any kind of advice or information (the Profs, the courses, etc). I'm looking for a school that will insha'Allah be beneficial for my imaan and deen -- not only be a forum for an academic understanding of Islam. Jazak'Allah kheir! Wasalaam, |

Wa'alaikum as-salaamu wa rahmatullahi wa barakaatuh, Subhan'Allah, I was just about to post this same question! There are some other schools in the area as well that I've been trying to research. I don't know very many people who actually went to GSIS, but I know of quite a few who contemplated it. :) If you're a sis, feel free to IM me, I may be able to find some who have actually taken a class or two there, insha'Allah. |

[slm] Anon You are in Canada you say and you are considering the graduate school in VA. I am curious about something. Why are you not considering McGill University as a possible alternative ? The profs there are learned and the courses they offer in Islamic studies are also quite good. However, things may have changed there. No harm in sniffing that place out :) Wassalam. |

Assalamu 'alaikum, I was told that there was too many politics at McGill (from a former Prof there), and from a student, that in some classes people have felt the need to walk out. I want to go for knowledge -- not academia. Trust me, I have been in school long enough, and know the difficulties in the actual "study" of religion (ie: parsing a sentence from a scriptural text until it no longer has any real meaning). I want to see how the verses dance with one another, and see what they are saying and what believers can learn from them (ie: lower criticism = presumably VA) -- not make commentary on the various ways the Qur'an has been edited (put together)(ie: higher criticism* = presumably McGill). I need to know from experience, not from mission statements -- which is why I'd love to speak to a graduate from the school... Wasalaam *note: higher/lower is simply terminology in the study of religious texts and is not suggestive of quality. |
