Hajj Rites & Questions

I can not find any information on who built the pillars of jamarat and the pillar at Mount Arafat.  Can anyone help me? I just know some kiddie will ask!

Also, I have always heard that the sacrifice is called Qurbani. However, recently an Arab speaking man said that the word refers to a sacrifice done by pagans for a god.

He said I should use the word hadiy or udhiyah.

Can anyone collaborate this?

as salaamu alaykum,

Udhiyya is the Arabic term, Qurbaani is Urdu and Persian.. it's a word that means sacrifice, most often used in reference to the sacrifice at hajj.

I don't think it refers to a pagan sacrifice in particular, but maybe the bro had issues because it's a term used to refer to *any* type of sacrifice, and not just this specific one.

Urdu speakers feel free to correct me :)

w'Allahu a'lam.

I was reading a Chistian dialogue book and in it was a referral to Jacob building a pillar. Genesis 31: ~41-50.

Any Seekers out there know?

Kathy, I doubt that's it.  That passage refers to what is essentially described as a rock pile, whose purpose was to serve as a witness to a promise made between Jacob and his father-in-law.  However, the location of this pillar is given in the biblical record as being the hill country of Gilead, which is north and west of the Dead Sea, according to maps I have seen.  That is likely a little too far out of the way to be either of the pillars you are referring to.

I think someone before asked a q about mahrams and hajj and stuff? barr? can't remember but thought i'd post something muhammad al shareef wrote on it but of course can't find the original q thread, but here it is ;)

Shaykh Salah ? hafidhahullaah - answered with the following points:

· The hadith that speak about a woman not traveling unless it is with a mahram are authentic and explicit. Therefore, this is the general rule.

· The hadith speak about a day and a night / 2 days / 3 days

· Some of the Ulumaa? mentioned that it would be permissible for a woman to travel with a ?rifqah ma?moonah? (safe company) if no Mahram was available in the case of Hajj and Umrah specifically.

· Of the Ulumaa? that said this was Imam Shaafi?ee - rahimahullaah

· The proof of this latter opinion? The wives of the Prophet ? sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ? used to perform Hajj after his death ? sal Allaahu alayhi wa sallam ? with a safe group of people. The Sahaabah saw them doing this and did not condemn it.

· Some recent scholars tried to deduce the rational in this ruling and concluded that it was for the safety of the woman and the fitnah in her being alone for such a trying span of time.

· Thus, according to what these scholars deduced, whenever there is absolutely no chance of fitnah befalling and the safety of the woman is guaranteed, then in sha Allah, we pray there is no harm in her travel.

· It should be noted that this last opinion however is only the opinion of a few. And it?s important that it not become a general rule. Instead when there is total and absolute necessity in her travel, and the travel is safe from Fitnah and danger to the woman, then in sha Allah it?s ok.

· This exception should not be translated to permit non-necessity non-mahram travel. Ex: like just to visit a friend in another city and have a picnic.

· Thus, if there is a clear and obvious blessed reason for the journey, and there is no presence of Fitnah or harm to the woman (such as attending an important class on Islam in a neighboring town) and she travels with safe company (2 women or more), then in sha Allah, it?s ok.

And Allah knows best
