Welcome teams to the downunder desert :) Who knew there could be such controversy on such a simple question!!!

Well the issue is that, the clue tends to lead one to Broken Hill as the answer, yet the first mosque built in Australia was in Maree, and the first big city mosque was build in Adelaide so what's the answer? Adelaide started to be built earlier but was completed after Broken Hill was. And some of the teams submitted 2 answers or even 3 !!!! Should we disqualify them?

So I tried to get some australia experts but they were as lost as I was. So we're going to have to accept any of the three answers, inshaAllah.

Congrats teams.. this was a non-elimination round. you lucked out  ;)

Broken Hill is also the site of Australia's first mosque. It was erected in 1891 by a small group of Muslim camel drivers from Afghanistan and India. The location is the site of a former camel camp.

finally a chance to look up the answer to a clue   <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/rolleyes.gif>
pls find mine and paula's answer below:

Afghan Mosque

The Mosque is situated on the site of the former 'Camel Camp' where Afghan and Indian Camel drivers loaded and unloaded their camel teams, from the earliest days of Broken Hill. The Mosque was constructed around 1891 as a place of worship for the followers of the Prophet Mohammed (or Mahomet). The Moslem Temple ( <http://www.jannah.org/board/images/angry.gif> ) of Broken Hill is the only surviving Mosque in Australia which was built by early cameleers. In 1968 The Broken Hill Historical Society renovated the building in recognition of a unique, but important phase in the development of transport in the west Darling District of New South Wales.

However, the first mosque built in australia was at marree in Northern South Australia ub 1861. and the first MAJOR mosque was built in Adelaide in 1890

I hope this is what ur looking for

Answer to Race to Destination #5 from Abu Atheek and Sajida:

Marree in northern South Australia contains Australia's first Mosque built in 1861.

Australia and Islam ? a long history

Muslims in Australia have a long history. Some of Australia's earliest visitors, pre-dating European settlement, were Muslims from the east Indonesian archipelago. It is thought fishermen and traders from the island of Macassar had been visiting Australia's north from as early as the 16th century. However, the first significant semi-permanent Muslim population came in the form of Afghan camel drivers in the 1800s.

These camel drivers played a significant role in opening up Australia's vast arid inland areas, carrying explorers, developers and even the telegraph to places barely accessible by horse or on foot.

Small numbers of Muslims were also recruited from Dutch and British colonies in Southeast Asia to work in the Australian pearling industry in the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

Australia's first mosque was built at Marree in northern South Australia in 1861. The first major mosque was built in Adelaide in 1890. Another was built in Broken Hill (New South Wales) in 1891.

The real basis for Australia's modern day Muslim population came in the wake of World War Two. Between 1947 and 1971 the Muslim population increased from 2704 to 22 311, as European Muslims, mainly Cypriot Turks, sought a new life in Australia.

Lebanese migrants, many of whom were Muslims, began arriving in larger numbers after the outbreak of civil war in Lebanon in 1975.
