AssalamU Alaikum,

I'm alittle confused since I've heard conflicting reports... when does dhul-hijjah start (please be specific-- ex: The evening of the 2nd of February-- people often confuse me when they say a date... not sure if its the day or the evening before it  :()

slm,

velll............. let's see

moonsighting.com says this:

The moon's conjunction is on Saturday, February 1, 2003, at 10:48 Universal Time, i.e. 5:48 am Eastern Standard Time - 2:48 am Pacific Standard Time. On Feb 1, the moon is going to be 14 hours old on West coast and cannot be seen in any continent of the world. On February 2, it will be 38 hours old on West coast and a big moon, but it should not be taken as 2nd day moon. Therefore, first day of Zul-Hijja is going to be on Feb 3, and accordingly, 10th Zul-Hijjah and Eid-al-Adha in North America is going to be on Wednesday, Feb 12, 2003, insha'Allah. According to moonsighting Eid-al-Adha in the whole world except some Polynesian Islands should be on Wednesday, February 12, 2003 insha'Allah. However, the Saudi Taqweem Ummul-Qura (calendar) shows Eid-al-Adha on Feb 11 in Saudi Arabia.

So that means Feb 12 is the 10th DAY of dhul hijjah, which means Feb. 3rd Monday is the 1st DAY of dhul hijjah which means Sunday night is when it actually starts.

Unless you go by saudi and that would make u go one day earlier for all the above

Assalamu Alaikum;

Don't people usually go with Saudi for Eidul-Adha for the purpose of fasting the day of Arafaat when the hujaaj are actually on 'Arafaat??

As-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullah,

[Don't want to start nothin' but] just saw this in the latest Islamic Horizon (ISNA) magazine issue, page 54. Slightly modified version of this text is found on the moonsighting.com site. I'm not sure if the Shura Council of NA is still deliberating on this issue, or if it's their final call, since it's not up on the ISNA site yet.
Allahu A'lim.
May Allah increase us in unity, and help us benefit from these 10 best days, aameen.

Excerpt:

"There is room in Islamic Fiqh to adopt a weaker, but still acceptable opinion if that achieves greater benefit (maslaha); in that case greater unity. Therefore, the Fiqh Council recommends the restoration of the previous method of determination of Eidul Adha to follow the announcement in Makkah about the beginning of the month of Dhul Hijjah."

Arightey.. looks like Eid is on the 11th then for everyone inshaAllah:) This just posted at www.isna.net

Following the official announcement made by the Supreme Judiciary Council
of Saudi Arabia on Feb. 2, 2003 that the standing in prayer of pilgrims on
Mount Arafat (The Day of Arafat), the cornerstone of the five-day annual
pilgrimage, will be held on Feb. 10, 2003 (Monday), and in accordance with
the decision of the National Shura Council of North America (of Dec. 17,
2002), ISNA is pleased to announce that Eid al-Adha will be celebrated in
North America on Tuesday, Feb.11, 2003.

The Haj will start on Feb. 9 with the assembly of more than 2 million
pilgrims in Mina, a valley near Makkah, on their way to Arafat, where
Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) gave his last sermon.
