PRESS RELEASE: _______________________________________________________________________ DISCOVER THE QUR'AN AN ISLAM AWARENESS WEEK Presented by the Muslim Students' Association at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus _______________________________________________________________________ In the Name of God, the Beneficent, the Merciful "And this is a Book which we have revealed as a blessing: so follow it and be righteous, that you may receive mercy" (Al-Qur'an 6:155). UNIVERSITY OF TORONTO (January 21, 2003) - Literally translated as "The Recitation," the Qur'an has been the primary source of guidance for Muslims for more than 1,400 years. It is considered to be the unaltered word of God, revealed to Prophet Muhammad during the formative years of Islam. Although highly esteemed throughout the Muslim world, the Qur'an has remained largely unknown to the general public. Recently, however, considerable curiosity and suspicion have developed about its contents. The Muslim Students' Association (MSA) at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus wishes to acquaint the general public with the Qur'an within a relaxed and friendly atmosphere. With that purpose, the public is invited to a range of free-access Islam Awareness Week events at the University of Toronto, St. George Campus from February 3-7, 2003. Islam Awareness Week will consist of a five-day exhibit, several workshops, and a lecture. The exhibit will include informational displays, film screenings, and multicultural food sales. Three interactive workshops will address the following topics: "The Message of the Qur'an", "The History of the Qur'an", and "The Qur'an and Women: Suppression or Liberation?" The highlight of the week is expected to be Part III of the Discover Islam Lecture Series ("The Qur'an Among Revealed Scriptures"). This lecture will discuss Islam's historical and theological relationship with Christianity and Judaism. _______________________________________________________________________ Event: Islam Awareness Week: "Discover the Qur'an" Date: Monday, February 3, 2003 to Friday, February 7, 2003 Venue: University of Toronto, St. George Campus _______________________________________________________________________ PROGRAM COMPONENTS: EXHIBIT: DISCOVER THE QUR'AN Date: Monday, February 3 to Friday, February 7, 2003 Time: 9 a.m. - 5 p.m. Venue: Medical Sciences Building, Stone Lobby 1 King's College Circle WORKSHOP 1: THE HISTORY OF THE QUR'AN Date: Tuesday, February 4, 2003 Time: 6 - 8 p.m. Venue: Bahen Centre for Information Technology, Room 1240 40 St. George Street Speaker: Ahmed Kassas, Lecturer at the Islamic American University (Specialised in Qur'anic and Hadith Sciences) WORKSHOP 2: THE QUR'AN AND WOMEN: SUPPRESSION OR LIBERATION?
