A Request for our Christian Readers

Assalamu Alaikum,

As I see, there are a few number of Christians who are members of this board, some others
posting anonymously and many others, I am sure, reading only.  Given that President Bush
claims to be an evangelical Christian and is known to be very devout, I would like to
hear the opinions of the Christian friends on this matter: Do the evangelicals support what
Bush is doing (and planning to do) to the rest of the world? Or do you see the man as one
who does not live up to his faith? What do you find most disturbing in his policies
regarding Christianity? Till now, Islam has been scrutinised in this board and there is
nothing wrong with that given that one of the main purposes of this board is to respond to the
inquiries about Islam. However, I am sure there are many Muslims out there who are also
trying to understand the kind of faith Bush follows as his policies are geared towards
only violence outside the US (and Europe) while he claims to be a man of peace. I am only
making an honest request here and my aim is not to bash Christianity at all but only to
understand how it is perceived and practised. A fruitful and honest discussion may serve
many good purposes.

Peace

As a former evangelical Christian, my personal view is that while dubya may be "talking the talk", he is definitely NOT "walking the walk".  I know a good number of evangelicals who cringe when he calls himself such, as they fail to see how his actions and other words are supporting such statements.  On the other hand, I also know many who take his word at face value and give him their full support, simply because he claims to be evangelical, regardless of what his other actions may be.  So, from my observations, the evangelical "world" appears to be split over the issue.  But I am afraid my sample sizes are too small to be able to make a statement as to which "camp" holds the majority.

maybe you can give a list of policies so that we can comment on each individually.  As far as planning to do  that is mere speculation so i doubt commenting on that wold be worth much.

Dawn, thanks for your response. It is good to know that the evangelicals are
not “en masse” behind the current craziness. The Muslims, if not Islam, have been literally
bashed everywhere, particularly in the Western press (and on this board), for not having
spoken enough against the despicable attacks in NY. Well, we, including many respectable
Muslim leaders, have and are continuing to. However, then we have been bashed for not
doing enough to help fight the apparent extremism. Well, my point is that by the same logic
we can turn to the right-minded Christians and ask them whether they are doing anything
right now to dissuade the Bush administration. Well, if they tell us that they are doing
their part by walking in anti-war demonstrations for instance, but still cannot prevent
war drums from being played, then who is to blame in that case? Personally, I would not
even think of bashing those right-minded Christians. However, sadly many many Muslims have
been abused in different ways since that infamous day... The existence of right-minded
Christians (and Jews) still give me the hope that the current American administration will
not be able to succeed to turn Huntingdon’s thesis into reality. We should all strive for
that purpose, I think.

Mike, as to a particular policy, then what about the approaching war in Iraq? But I would
like to remind you that I am seeking an answer from the evangelicals’ point of view, NOT
REALPOLITIK’S!! I am already aware of egoistic/instrumental interests of international
actors. In other words, can the evangelicals justify this war on the basis of the just war
doctrine of Christianity? Thanks.
