Hajj Season on Channel 4

Five young people from around the world prepare to make the greatest trip on earth, Hajj - the annual Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca.

Following last week's introductory Slots, Channel 4's unique coverage of the event starts with a one-hour film that follows them in the months leading up to the Hajj.

Kosser Sheikh, a 29-year-old mother-of-two from Brent in London, leaves behind her family and City job to head to Mecca.

Serfraz Qayyum, a young father from Middlesbrough, wrestles with a dilemma - stay at home to care for his newborn baby or travel to Saudi Arabia.

Teen-tearaway turned devout Muslim Mohammed Alawadi, 20, gets ready to lead a group of western converts to Hajj;

Hallalah Hasam, an African-American fifth generation Muslim leaves Kansas City, while magazine editor Aamer Chaudary from Pakistan decides to perform Hajj on behalf of his dead father, who never made the pilgrimage.

Hajj begins tomorrow and Channel 4 film crews will follow the pilgrims around the clock, a tough assignment considering Saudi Arabian authorities are expecting almost three million pilgrims in Mecca this year. Throughout the week, viewers can follow the pilgrims' stories, every night on Channel 4 at 7.50pm

I'm curious, can women travel without a mahram for the Hajj? as in the case of Kosser Sheikh or does she have a mahram? Someone told me that depending on which country you're from, you don't need a mahram, is that true??

There's differences of opinion about the mahram issue with regards to Hajj and going in groups. Best to do some research on it and ask your Imam and all.

I didn't like the fact that they showed that same guy u just mentioned but hey, he was being honest.  I think what he was feeling is more common than most ppl realise, (I kw a of a few ppl who felt this way, but on umrah not hajj tho),  it's just a shame it came out on a documentary which non-muslims were insh'Allaah watching too.

Yeah somebody should have counterbalanced that ladies view and given correct islaamic teachings, based on the qu'raan/sunnah.

Wa salaam

Asalaamu Alaikum ;-)

I was particularly impressed with the Brother from Teeside.

What was amazing was the sister who had changed so much in such a short space of time. Amazing what guidance from Allah can do to you.

It'll be interesting how they cope in Mina and Arafat and what sort of pictures the film crews will be able to take.

I see on the Channel 4 website they are going to have a live webchat with one brother during the night in Muzdalifa!!!

Q: Can someone perform the Hajj for someone else, while the themselves haven't performed it? [as in the case of 'Aamer Chaudery']

The Saudi government don't allow women to perform the Hajj without a mahram. 'Snot permissible. They can only go without the mahrams as long as they are in a group. And all the women have to be over 45 years of age, too. They have to get written permission from their mahrams/walees, though.

Was-salaamu 'alaykum wa rahmatullaah.

i agree with saffiyah, overall it's a good documentary.  i was really impressed with the sister, i particularly liked the fact that they showed her buying cloth to make her clothes with, and she was explaining why she was buying certain fabrics and not others.

*sigh* makes me want to be there  :'(

p.s the channel 4 hajj website is really cool  www.channel4.com/hajj
